  • Henrique Keeps Wanderers Anchored To Bottom

    mack

A dubious early penalty converted by Henrique on a stormy night in Parramatta kept the Wanderers winless and adrift in last place on the A-League ladder.

The gift penalty from Kris Griffiths-Jones was slotted down the middle by the diminutive forward, while the Wanderers were content to dink the ball around the edges of the penalty box in an apparent refusal to shoot at goal, a refusal which cost them a chance of getting even a point from the game.

Seyi Adeleke was adjudged to have brought down a Roar player in the box and Henrique made no mistake to open the scoring in the 4th minute. The Roar were the better in the first half but couldn't add to their lead.

The Wanderers took control of the match in the second stanza, but a seeming obsession with playing on the flanks instead of taking shooting opportunities began to frustrate the 10,000 strong crowd who braved the atrocious conditions.

Nikita Rukavytsya had the best and final chance for the home side, as he finally took advantage of some neat play to blast a shot that cannoned off the woodwork and went out for a goal kick.

The Wanderers next match is against Adelaide United in Adelaide on Saturday the 6th of December.

We'll be fine. Winning the ACL is forever. I will still take that even if we 'win' the wooden spoon this year. We are a salary capped club with a small squad. Something has to give. We have been playing consistently big games since October 2013.

Some of you are letting the cheap shots from other fans get to you.

They're only doing it because of the amount of jealousy and hatred that's built up in them over 2 seasons.

Remember this is who they really are.

As for the "COVE" I didn't hear them all night. These morons from West Sydney were there an hour before kick off and basically made it a home game for themselves.WTF is wrong with us?

These twits overtook the pub,the stadium and kicked our asses on the pitch

also reading though this thread i dont actually think we played that poorly, i think the wanderers tried their hardest and we created enough chances we just did not score enough, however the first 30 minutes was some of the worst football i have ever seen the wanderers play, it felt like we had them on the ropes but couldnt get that final punch, or any punches, maybe i saw the match wrong though

Remember when people said this early-mid last season?

last year we weren't 0 from 8......just saying

say it as much as you like last night was a must win game , thus the best 11 had to play

Last season we had form slumps which you have to ride and made us stronger for the pointy end of the season.

Every game is a must win, but it doesn't mean you can play your best XI 6 times in 3 weeks then play against stronger opposition in Morocco in 12 days. This isn't PlayStation where you can just run the players into the ground, put them on the bench for 30min and they are sprinting around for 90min.

You're being awfully short sighted if you think picking up points against Brisbane Roar is more important than giving it the best shot at the Club World Cup which we may only ever get one chance to in our lifetime.

    Fatigue...

The boys are out on their feet, both physically and psychologically. That first half against ESFC was a glimpse of the team we are..Morocco is a massive monkey on the back at the moment, we have been through the ringer, and its understandable where we are at the moment.

Last night crowds were understandably down for obvious reasons, RBB looked small, sounded huge..a massive shout out to those guys in the pouring rain who gave it all on a miserable night..For my money, RBB was the MVP last night..

Can only go up from here..

I left at 81 minutes disgusted in the fact that we conceeded in the 4th minute and never really deserved to equalise!!! And mind you brisbane are shite also and that's how bad we were tonight we couldn't finish off a shite team missing their best player and a caretaker coach!!! Absolutely disgusting !!!!

Might be harsh but just an opinion. If we were on a 10 match unbeaten streak playing with confidence then fine. I just don't feel that it was a good time to be away from training and the players. The players last night had no confidence whatsoever.

I don't think Popa should have gone to Manilla to collect that award. He spent hardly any time with the players between the Derby and last night. Things like that really do make a difference.

Harsh to say the least.... after all he's done for us! If he hadn't gone to "collect" it, he wouldn't have been awarded it.

This is called a form slump. It's inevitable that we would have one eventually. I think some people honestly believed that we would win all the time and make every grand final for the rest of our existence. This is reality.

We'll still make the grand final. :-)

I am okay with the result cause I am more than okay with being underdogs for the minute cause someone soon will pay dearly when our squad clicks. Still a heap commentators at the back of 56, but it was an improvement.

56 in the derby was more depressing than any loss.

The ACL took us 2 games into the league , sacrifice to your hearts content ,rotate away ,  but there will be no pointy end this year if we continue in the vain we are going...we are 1/3 into the year and are playing with no confidence , no stability and no wins

club world cup should be seen as a bonus , we should not be sacrafising 1/3rd of the league for it....

I don't think the players didn't try last night. I just think they weren't good enough against a pretty well organised Brisbane team. I think saying the players weren't trying is just some frustration coming out from certain supporters. I got frustrated too. But the reality is we tried and just weren't good enough on the night.

We have to accept that other teams have overtaken us at the moment. Some our players like Haliti, Cole and Bridge who jagged us results in the last two seasons, aren't as effective anymore. Perhaps the a-league is passing them by, and we need to use more young blood in the future. Also guys like Castelen, Saba and Adeleke who have come in, are just not as good as the likes of Ono, Hersi and Polenz. Still struggling to see what Popa saw in Saba. Let's hope they can all improve. I still think  we can improve based on the performance gainst Sydney FC, when we have our best 14 available.

One of the things I would like to see though is for Popa to change the formation. I don't think we are suited to a 4-3-3, but rather a 4-4-2, or someone mentioned a 3-5-2. One thing about a 3-5-2 is that we can pack our defence more in the middle as we are conceding silly goals through the middle these days. It also allows Adeleke and on the left (as well as who ever is on the right) to push up more and not be so concerned about defensive duties. With two strikers up front (Tomi and Ruka) we have more potency in front of goal.

I think with the 4-2-3-1 the other teams are simply playing us between the lines with nifty passing. This system is more effective when the front 4 are really pressing the defence and not letting them play out, as we did in season 1. We simply struggle to do this anymore. With a 3-5-2 we could be more compact, and harass and not allow teams to outplay us in the middle of the park. we are always losing the battle in the midfield where there are gaping holes when we begin to get tired. The 3-5-2 also give us wingers who can than cross to two strikers, rather than the usual one (Santa or Tomi). More bodies in the box equals more chance of a goal.

    My 3-5-2 formation would be:

    Hammill Spira Topor

Castelen Poljak Saba La Rocca Adeleke

    Tomi Ruka

Onwards and upwards from here. Let's hope we can get a win soon. I'm sure the players and the coach are hurting. It will just make them try even harder. This is a true test of our supporters. Let's not disappoint.

    Do we even shoot?

I think the crowd were wanting the players to shoot from 20-40 yards, I didn't agree with those sentiments

Regarding the boo's, was directed at the referees while they were walking off and once they were off the field they stopped

I agree Prydz about the boos directed at the ref although, I also believe some of them were for the team's pathetic performance. I have no problem with this. Sometimes the fans do have a right as a paying customer to let the team know of their lack of hunger and very ordinary performance. No one can deny we were well below par and since probably even before ACL final we have been on a sliding decline. The players are tired, we are being punished for our success but that's football. Officialdom wasn't all that kind to us last night but we should be used to this week in, week out. Until FFA are serious and start to bring in new blood from the Junior ranks or overseas then this will be the norm.

I have seen many teams bounce back after a razzing from their own fans. I don't believe any player, manager or team staff would have thought that a razzing from their own fans who trekked out midweek on a monsoonal night would have been out of order, for their obvious lack of effort.

Look I have to disagree, maybe there is nothing wrong with booing the team after 90 minutes after the final whistle but I can 100% say that those around me were booing the referee. There were times when we/they got frustrated with the general not taking of our chances and when we took the wrong the option. The frustration was not in the form of boo's however, it was very clear that as the referee's started walking off the field they were booed off the field. Not impressed at the level of refereeing in our game at the moment.

This is called a form slump. It's inevitable that we would have one eventually. I think some people honestly believed that we would win all the time and make every grand final for the rest of our existence. This is reality.

A form slump is more about the team performance. We are doing enough to win these games, maybe not scoring goals but we are creating enough chances (maybe not against Wellington, but since Perth to Roar, we have had enough to score goals to win the game. We will play a lot worse and win games in the future and for this reason I don't think it is a form slump. If we were getting through games, everyone under performing, combinations not clicking, not creating chances and just can't figure out why we aren't svoring. This equates a form slump. We aren't getting results or converting our chances enough.

I dont like the way our attacking line swap positions during the game, its a good idea, but so poorly executed. We end up with Castelan and Bridge in the middle twiddling their thumbs or Saba day dreaming on the left. It needs to be done as rehearsed or not done at all, because we just end up with right and left backs with no clue of what to do, and players all stuffed into the 18 yard box.

To tell you the truth I really like the way we have added this to our style, it's a tactical evolution from Popa and enables players like castelen and Ruka to come central and use there ability to beat players to get into good goal scoring positions. The only thing we are missing is putting the chances in the back of the net.

I don't think Popa should have gone to Manilla to collect that award. He spent hardly any time with the players between the Derby and last night. Things like that really do make a difference.

I disagree, I think Popa would have done the match review with the players before he left but I don't think it was that important because there wasn't too much we did wrong against ESFC. It was just important that the players continued on with there performance against ESFC into Roar but I don't think tactically there was much that much for Popa to change at training on Monday or Tuesday. It was up to the players to put in the performance on the night and I feel in this regard they were lacking and the lack of time spent with the team had little effect. Also, I think it is important that the club takes in the awards that its success brings even if it meant that preparation for the game wasn't 100% perfect for the game.

Regards to your first sentence. This is what makes the Wanderers different, because we could lose every game this year and set a new 'record' and we won't be folding or rebranding. You can take that as 100% red. We are a 'real' football club. Here to stay.
