  • Western Sydney Wanderers Are Champions Of Asia

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been crowned the Champions of Asia after a stoic 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, the Wanderers winning the two legged tie 1-0 on aggregate following Tomi Juric's goal in Sydney in the first leg.

The 64th minute strike in the first leg at Parramatta Stadium proved to be the only goal of the tie, with the "Blue Wave" crashing forlornly against a Red & Black fortification manned by a team who refused to concede a goal to their better resourced opponents.

In the 18th minute Al Hilal had the first chance of the game, swinging a free kick from the left flank that the Wanderers weren't able to get anything on, thankfully for them neither did one of their opponents, a right boot stuck out but agonisingly distant from making contact.

A minute before half-time the first penalty shout of the night was waved away by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Inside the area a ball rolled into the path of the flying Nawaf Shaker, Antony Golec clipped the right foot of the attacker but the theatrical leap perhaps weighed the incidence in the favour of the Australians.

After the break it was another stonewall penalty turned down, Salman Alfaraj latching onto a through ball deep in the right corner of the penalty area and was clearly brought down by Ante Covic but wasn't punished for the indiscretion. Another potential penalty came when the ball was kicked at short range into arms of Brendon Santalab, Nishimura judging that it was ball to hand rather than hand to ball.

The Saudi's pushed on and on, pressing for a goal that would take the game into extra time, and it looked for all money like they had one in the 84th minute. A cutback found talismanic striker Yasser Al-Qahtani, his shot from near the penalty spot had no right to be saved but the big hand of Covic found a way. The ball bounced once before spinning out for a corner just inches away from the goalpost. The save was the biggest moment for an Australian keeper since Mark Schwarzer in the famous shootout against Uruguay.

The Wanderers had precious little attack of their own, the best chance coming from a mazy Vitor Saba dribble that released Labinot Haliti, the shot being blocked desperately. Western Sydney didn't need a goal however, an eventual 6 minutes of injury time passed before the final whistle blew and the Wanderers were officially crowned Champions of Asia.

The immediate post-game scene was marked by disgraceful conduct from the Al Hilal players, with Matthew Spiranovic being spat on and headbutted, a melee threatened to breakout but cooler heads prevailed.

The extraordinary end to the Wanderers maiden assault on the continental stage ended in a victory that few if any would have predicted in the first year or even second year of the club's existence. The championship is an eternal credit to the tactical nous of Tony Popovic, and the resilience of every man to have pulled on the famous Red & Black hoops of Western Sydney.

The Club World Cup now looms in December, the Wanderers joining San Lorenzo (CONMEBOL), Real Madrid (UEFA), ES Setif (CAF), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Auckland City (OFC) & hosts Moghreb Tetouan in Morocco from the 10th of December. The Wanderers will face Cruz Azul of Mexico for the right to face European giants Real Madrid in the semi-final. Such a class would be the biggest competitive fixture for an Australian side since South Melbourne took on Manchester United in the 2000 edition of the competition.

Tony Popovic spoke after the match about the win, "We were called a small club yesterday. Today we are the biggest in Asia."

The next match for the Champions of Asia is against the Wellington Phoenix, on Friday the 7th of November.

Right now I'm sitting back in the bistro at the Jamberoo pub, which as many of you know is the home of Johnny Warren's football memorabilia. It is as close to a museum or shrine to football in this country as possible, filled with pennants, photos, medals, shirts etc.

I can't describe how good and how humbling it is to see the stuff of history all around me, the relics of an era when our sport was really treated as only being for shielas, wogs & pooftahs, knowing that a scant 30 hours ago our Wanderers fulfilled one of Johnny's dreams. Our club, our players, our Popa, and those of us who have kept the faith with the red and black these last 30 months have achieved something that I believe the late JW would have embraced, admired, welcomed. By beating the likes of Hiroshima, GVE, Seoul and Al Hilal the Wanderers have walked on the footsteps of Johnny and his comrades and arguably gone one better.

Treasure these days brothers and sisters, and reflect on the honour we have brought to those who went before us.

It really is a privilege to be in a decade of time within Australian football which we will look back as one of the major turning points.

Exciting times we are in, but as JW would have said, exciting times to come.

I am also still buzzing this morning...................... BUT at some point over the coming few weeks the next target is to send a message to the A League that we are coming for them and that this won't affect us. I don't know.... it is just the way I am, I guess I need to stand back and chill and appreciate this more...... but I tend to always look at the next target and focus on that also.

And you can bet your **** life that the next game will be in Popa's mind at some point today. Personally I would like Mack to get the next A League fixture thread up and running, get some focus on that going also.

Yes I am the kind of guy that pulls the xmas decorations down on new years day and says thank **** that is over... now get the *** back to work :P  That was my old mans work ethic lol I suspect Popa might be the same.

Lets enjoy the arrival home tonight................ then we have some *** hard graft to do all over again.

Exactly right, not to be Captain Bringdown, but if we are to make next years ACL, we need to be able to refocus our energies soon. One positive is we have a lot of players, such as Castelen, Ruka etc. who weren't a part of this, so they will be chomping at the bit for the A-League anyway.

Was great going to work and having so many non-footballing people talking about the ACL win to me, we just go from strength to strength. It has been said a thousand times, but what we have achieved in just two and a half years is scarcely believable.

I've just been watching THAT save again.  I've just noticed their striker turning away thinking he'd scored.  It's a beautiful moment.  I can watch that clip for days and days and days.

    Productivity today.  Still zip.

i've been watching highlights of the game.

if anyone wants to see it, look at the 91st minute of play.

nassir (the headbutting spitter) headbutts topor while nt-s' back is turned.

thing is cause the guy is so short he headbuts nt-s's shoulder blades and topor doesn't even feel it.

the guy is as dirty of a grub as it gets. i hope he gets banned for life.

    or if it's typical afc crap and he gets off with nothing;

lets pick james te huna or hector lombard in the asian cup squad and put them on as a late sub against the saudis to 'mark' him.

ESFC seem to be consoling themselves with our up coming A League schedule and club world cup commitments, they think we are farked for the rest of the season.

But I thought with them being the Man United of Australia and all that they would be used to schedules such as ours? I mean it is only by being successful that you get schedules like ours ;)

A few weeks ago Popovic outlined the goals for this season in a radio interview: winning the ACL and the GF. Like last year, the premiership is not realistic (not his words but mine). Rescheduling two more league matches because of Morocco plus the Asia Cup break means that the WSW will play two games per week for most of Feb, Mar and Apr. It is going to be tough. The contenders for the top three spots then are VIC, ADE and ESFC, with us having a chance still to break in there.

I am not worried though. Quite the opposite. We have the goods to beat any side in their home ground. It would be quite something to play ESFC in the knock out stage, FFA scheduling the match for ANZ, and us rolling them in front of a 60k plus crowd. Delicious tought!

This was destined for sure!! i mean some of their point blank misses were unexplainable. There was one shot that was a toe poke away and missed??. ha ha it was like their feet were not working that day. a classic cup tie!

Covic would've saved all three pens anyway! Ref waved play on just to keep the game flowing.

    Playing advantage I see ;)

And it's all Laser Karma for sure :)

I actually think the ref saw the lasers and thought '**** these guys I'm giving it to wsw'

Lads, will there actually be a star on top of our emblem?

If so, is that on A-league jerseys too, or just when we play in ACL.

The ref robbed Croatia in the opening World Cup game v Brazil and what better way to make it up to the Croatians and at the same time honoring the legacy of Ono. I spit and throw sandals at any other analysis.

Cruz Azul vs Sporting Kansas City, they got up 5-1 at home after losing 1-0 in america. Kansas City looked pretty open at the back judging from some of the goals they conceded but nevertheless that's a lot of goals
