  • Grand Final Bound Wanderers Lose To Mariners

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers capitulated to a pathetic 2-0 home loss against the lowly Central Coast Mariners this afternoon at Spotless Stadium.

After Tony Popovic's striker-less lineup spent 45 minute fumbling with the ball in midfield then the Mariners pounced in the second half with 2 goals to Roy O'Donovan. The Wanderers look devoid of shape and structure in the first half, with numerous occasions holding the ball in midfield 4 or 5 players crammed into the wing, leaving no-one in the middle to attack balls into the box or to make runs off the shoulder of the last defender. Mitch Nichols did little more than get his GPS tracking meters up, as his darting forward, sideways, backwards resulted in confusing the rest of the attackers and leaving them with no forward target.

If the first half was poor, the second was calamitous. Jonathan Aspro, who has been one of the more solid performers for the Wanderers this season gifted his opponents a chance from the penalty spot. As the Mariners lined up a corner kick, Aspro wrapped up Liam Rose in a bear hug and a mere 1 second after the corner was taken Kris Griffiths-Jones was pointing to the spot. O'Donovan blasted the penalty pasted Vedran Janjetovic to open the scoring in the 65th minute.

Brendon Santlab was finally bought on and he could not be the miracle man once again this season. He had two clear chances to put the Wanderers on the board, with one he put a diving header straight at Paul Izzo, and a second volleyed effort he put wide.

O'Donovan then sealed the points. The Mariners launched a somewhat aimless ball over the top of the Wanderers defence, and O'Donovan ran onto the ball and took advantage of horrendous positioning from Vedran Janjetovic to chip the ex-Sydney FC keeper into an open goal.

The Sydney Derby looms large next week, if the Wanderers lose then Popovic needs to resign or be sacked by the board. Enough is enough. Sentimentality does not win new trophies.

Only three positives for me about that dispiriting game.

    1. Having Manfred for company during the game.

    2. Meeting nmh94 at half time - lovely to put another face to a forumite.  :)

    3. Exchanging a few words with Josep Gombau as we walked to the car park.

You might have seen him on the big screen tonight - he is really quite transformed in appearance. With a lot of weight lost, he looks 15 years younger than he did when he coached Adelaide.

Every bit as warm and friendly a guy as he came across in his Adelaide days!!    :good:

    Deflating experience today ....

    **** crowd

    **** performance

    **** coaching

**** decision enhancing the RBB chants

The end of season will be interesting to see how many members decide that :

    **** venues

    **** team

    **** coach

    **** effort

    **** coach

Is just not worth it for another 2 years

I'll always go,but it doesn't mean you have to like what is dished up though.

Great to meet you too Wendy! One of the few positives on an otherwise rubbish afternoon.

Popa's press conference - not good enough. It is one thing to deflect after a loss when things are generally going okay, but when you are in mid Feb, you still haven't won at home and you are not winning in the same fashion almost every week, it isn't good enough.

RBB left right after the game, refused to meet with the players.

Oh, sorry. Should we have stayed and said "Jolly good effort lads. We'll get them next time"? Give them three cheers and a round of applause?

    Pffftttt. Nope. Not good enough.

Never said I disagreed with the decision.

Very very disappointing. Think players minds wher on last week's game (too complacent) and next weeks. Santa scores twice (3 times arguably) and gets benched?really?worst of all was RBB through the PA. how fake is that and it sounded terrible. I know I haven't said anything new but had to get it out of my system. Still let's try to find a positive, beating smurfs next week is only slightly more unexpected than losing 2-0 today was. You never know. We can only hope......

    Hahahahaha...

We were walking alongside him and his wife.....my husband was walking next to him.

    The conversation  went like this...

     Husband :  "Hola Josep!"

Josep:  BIG smile and a nod.

Husband (laughing):  You want a job with the Wanderers next season?

Josep: (Laughing- reaches out , puts his arm around husband's shoulder... and they take half a dozen paces forward like this - but he doesn't reply)

Me: (referring to dramatic weight loss)  You're looking fantastic!!

Josep:   (huge smile) It's my wife- she looks after me well!

We say our farewells etc  smiles all round... just a really lovey guy!!

So, really, this whole misunderstanding is your fault #ValterOut

The worst result today would have been a draw and the continuation of rewarding mediocrity with a playoff spot. I'm okay with a loss to no one because there is something cleansing about a crisis and our position on the table which doesn't lie or put a spin of denial to a woeful response to last weeks win. Send a demoralized team to the last Derby at home. At least no player got sent off as a present for this Derby ala NTS & Santa. For the most the RBB was a mad mosh WST are maybe still on holidays and the banner was pulled immediately after the game because we had already given our all so why applaud an enterprise that fell woefully short. We dominate games because they let us knowing we haven't the pace or ability to score. Our possession stats and Popa's presses flatter but don't hide the real state of affairs.

Popa saying we play better away from home. Lol, we've only got 1 home win vs 3 away wins. Neither is good.

You've been playing away from home all season ;)

Before this season started, it felt like 3 seasons was going to be a reeeelly long time.

But I doubt if any of us knew it was going to feel quite as long as it is likely to feel.   :(

If I never go to Spotless again it will still be too soon. I'd much rather hike to Campbelltown or even Allianz (there, I said it).

Spotless is turning into the WSW's burial ground. The combo of **** ground and current squad is killing the club.

Phew.... now you've said it,  I'm going to say it too.

    I've thought it all season.

I'd be thrilled to play at Allianz for the next two seasons, rather than go back to Soulless.

It .Just. Does. Not . Work.

    Wishful thinking I suppose.

You know, seems to me that ever since Ante Milicic left Popa's side he has lost the plot, at times done well with limited resources as he did last season steering us to the grand final, but still not quite right..... Ante is to Popa was Peter Taylor was to Brian Clough perhaps lol

Come home Ante.....or maybe you would like the full managers job..... just sayin...........

    Wendy,

The club believes that they can't play in the East. By the time this season is over they may need to rethink that position.

A combo of ANZ, Campbelltown, Allianz and Gosford even would excite me more than the Spotless proposition. What a woeful football venue.

But at least it's save. I never has a more thorough body scan on entry...

Spotless is where the club went to die.

ANZ is the graveyard we'll be buried in come Saturday.

    RIP

I'm so ******* keen for Campbelltown ACL games though in a ground that actually feels like home.

    Yep - throw in Penrith.

By the time this season is over, the capacity at Penrith might be perfect for what's left of the game-attending membership.
