Hughesy Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Ice hockey is unreal. I love watching the NHL. There was a local Sydney competition going on once upon a time but I’m unsure if that’s still the case. StringerBellend 1
MartinTyler Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 There's an Australian Ice Hockey league with 2 teams from Sydney. Ice hockey has really struggled here as there is always the threat of Ice Rinks being 're-purposed'. The Blacktown Rink closed a few years back then a 'replacement' was built at Bella Vista but I understand that one has now gone courtesy of Hillsong. There's a decent one at MacQuarie Centre but that has also been under threat in recent times. I have fond memories of following Nottingham Panthers back in the day.....many Saturdays consisted of watching TISWAS in the morning then down the pub....Forest home game....back to the pub.....Panthers home game.....pub again then finish off with a curry !! Sithslayer1991 Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 I think the number one issue with other sports that are not AFL, League, Union or Cricket is that the Australian media environment doesn't allow anything else to thrive. You compare that to the US and they don't care what sport is on, so long as its from their area. The College rivalry culture fuels the desire for more sport. CaptainJess 1

When the UK women’s team won gold at the last Olympics by beating I think the Dutch it went MASSIVE in the UK. Hockey was in all news everywhere, small competitions were broadcast and player numbers were up and they did their best to capitalise on that. Don’t know how good Australia’s hockey teams are these days but I am guessing if they are successful at the Olympics that your workload would sky rocket over night, then it’s over to your side about how you keep that rolling and maximise on it. I am guessing a lot of your strategy work would be around a successful Olympics at the min. Especially so the women’s team. Yes, us and a lot of other Olympic sports work on a 2/4 year cycle with Commonwealth Games and Olympics. Olympic years and the season immediately after are generally the big ones for us. But as soon as it dies down, the coverage and participation rates drop again. It's like clockwork. The AOC does a good job at promoting all sports and encouraging participation but there's only so much they can do while they have the airtime for those few weeks. There's a great portal they've developed this year that will link people through to their local Association in the sport they've selected from the menu if they want to play. However, only sports with sustained national comps or regular international matches really get regular coverage. Our men are number 2 in the world and women are number 3. We've got a great chance of medals in both, and a very good chance of gold for the boys. Hockey is actually similar to football in a lot of ways, and tactically is very close. There are obvious differences of course, but if you look at what sports have the most similarities, the style of play and format would put hockey and football up there. The physicality and technique of the players always blows me away. The most frustrating thing for us at the moment is the coverage "female" sport is getting. AFLW, NRLW, cricket and even Union/Rugby 8's are getting all this amazing coverage for "forging the way with women's sport" while sports like hockey, netball, basketball and football who have grown female participation for years get shafted. Hockey has been there and done the hard yards for decades and have 60% female playing base and highly successful national women's team to show for it, but no, AFLW runs a mickey-mouse, eight week comp with free entry for spectators and it's a revelation in women's sport Like it's a good thing women's sport is being recognised and given coverage, but don't make out like NRL and AFL are the first ones to give a **** about it. And to all you ice hockey fans Screw you, we're the better hockey marron, MartinTyler, EmMac and 6 others 8 1

You should know that AFLW invented women's sport! But I'm sure you also know it's because the amount of power, influence and money AFL has dwarfs the other sports and leads to journos fawning over anything they do. MartinTyler Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 I think I read somewhere recently that the AFL funds 3/4 sports journalists in Melbourne so other sports are really behind the 8 ball. Media Watch also reported the other week that some QLD newspapers were lifting articles directly from the GC Suns website and passing them off as their own. What pisses me off particularly is that AFLW reporting implies that playing AFLW is more prestigious than representing Australia at other sports. Edinburgh, alexd, wendybr and 5 others 8

And they get all that money and power because of all the media coverage they get, which drives viewers and attendance, which drives the money and power... rinse and repeat. Vicious cycle. It's easy to get coverage when you pay for it, or when things go to ****. But they don't want to know you any other time. Good luck trying to find a general sports jurno these days. It's near on impossible. They have their AFL, NRL, cricket and racing writers and then you're lucky if you get a "staff writer" or a general floater who disappears after a few months, never to be seen again and replaced by another floater who you have to build a relationship with all over again. The "paid for" articles in the media for AFL really sicken's me. Sithslayer1991 Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Ten back soccer to become ‘No.1 sport in Australia’ after $300m investment Vince Rugari June 15, 2021 — 3.01pm Network Ten has outlined its bold ambition to make football the number one sport in Australia after securing the rights to all Socceroos and Matildas matches outside of World Cups until the end of 2024. Ten tied up a five-year, $200 million rights deal for the A-League and W-League last month together with the network’s soon-to-be-launched streaming subsidiary, Paramount+. The Herald can reveal that Ten’s owners, ViacomCBS, have invested a further $100 million into the sport – according to sources with direct knowledge of the deal – to secure a suite of key international fixtures involving Australia’s men’s and women’s teams as well as the FFA Cup, AFC Champions League and other Asian tournaments. The new contract, struck with Football Australia, covers the next three and a half years and includes the Socceroos’ final round of qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup, the forthcoming Asian Cups for women (2022) and men (2023), and all friendlies and qualifiers for both senior national teams. Football has struggled at domestic level over the last few years but Ten is bullish about the sport’s potential in Australia and is planning a huge promotional blitz in the coming months to improve its visibility. Having once made the Big Bash League the country’s hottest sporting property in the summer, Ten believes it can now make the round-ball code the most popular in Australia. ViacomCBS has splashed $100 million to secure more soccer rights to broadcast on Network 10 and Paramount “It’s good to have a big ambition like that,” Beverley McGarvey, the chief content officer and executive vice president of ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand, told the Herald. “We’re not in this for a quick win. This is something we will build together with our partners. And I think all of the partners involved know that there’s a long-term goal here, but to do it you’ve got to do it one step at a time. Why Ten is taking a $200m punt on the struggling A-League “Being the number one sport in Australia, that’s not going to be true by next year. But I think it’s a good ambition we can work towards and this is kind of where it starts for us. “We really believe in football ... in terms of making this sport more accessible for all Australians, it helps it get there because we really believe in how the brands fit together and the ambitions of all of our businesses are really well aligned.” The arrangement is a boon for FA, although the rough $100 million figure is not all pure profit for the governing body. The deal also includes a significant amount of contra, while FA had to spend an unspecified amount to buy the rights to much of the Socceroos and Matildas content off the AFC’s confederation’s marketing agency to facilitate the package it has now sold to Ten. After sealing the A-League’s independence at the end of last year and having unveiled a series of lucrative sponsorship deals – including Commonwealth Bank’s naming rights sponsorship of the Matildas – in recent months, FA chief executive James Johnson said the organisation had weathered the worst of COVID-19 and was now on solid financial footing. “It’s been a remarkable 12 months for the sport. We’re in a really good position,” Johnson said. “This partnership with Network 10 is very important to us and I think it flags the bringing to life of a new era for our sport and we’re very happy with where we are and also where we’re going. ” Anti-siphoning laws dictate that all of the Socceroos’ home World Cup qualifiers must be shown on free-to-air television, but McGarvey said a “considerable amount” of other match content – including the annual FFA Cup final – will be broadcast via Ten. All other games will find a home on Paramount+, which will launch in Australia on August 11 at $8.99 per month. “We set out with the target of obtaining both sets of rights [A-League and W-League, and national teams] a few months ago and we’re very, very happy we’ve been able to obtain those,” said Jarrod Villani, chief operating and commercial officer and executive vice president of ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand. ‘A cultural moment’: Optus Sport lands 2023 Women’s World Cup broadcast rights “We think it puts the fan at the heart of what we’re trying to achieve here and that is deliver the Australian base of the sport to Australian-based fans, and we’re going to be very focused on making sure we get the balance right across our free-to-air and subscription-based assets.” The rights to the next men’s World Cup, Qatar 2022, are held by SBS, while Optus Sport last month secured the rights to the 2023 Women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Industry rumours suggest SBS could be open to on-selling their rights after announcing it would shut down its iconic The World Game digital platform. Optus, meanwhile, is currently on the hunt for a free-to-air partner for its Women’s World Cup coverage. DinoPresinger, Unlimited, Smoggy and 3 others 6

Hughesy Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 I think it’s criminal what’s happened to SBS’ football coverage. The way it’s just been abandoned stinks. Les and Johnny would be turning in their graves. Huge relief that all Aus football is on the same platform. If Paramount can nab the champions league that would be a massive help in gaining more eyeballs. My concern still remains that Aus football alone is not popular enough to draw a paying crowd. As mentioned a few times before in the last few weeks, The Project is really promoting the new football connection. They had Sam Kerr and Matt Ryan on last night, in a quite lengthy segment. Bit of serious stuff, a bit designed to let them show a bit of personality (which took MR by surprise somewhat...he said he wasn't used to it). That's the 3rd segment I've seen, including having Fozzie as one of the panelist one night. Last night's segment ended with an enthusiastic Walid saying "Thanks...and welcome to the Ch 10 family!" Also they've had a number of decent news stories re football on the main News. It's by far the most coverage I've ever seen on FTA television. Carns, Sithslayer1991, EmMac and 2 others 5
