  • 5-4 Extra Time Epic Sends WSW To Adelaide Grand Final

    mack

A ridiculous comeback from 3-0 down set up an extra time thriller that ended in a 5-4 win that sends the Western Sydney Wanderers to the grand final in Adelaide next week.

In what was the true last match for the Western Sydney Wanderers at Parramatta Stadium before it is rebuilt, the two sides delivered an epic match that could quite rightly be called the best A-League game ever, for a place in the Grand Final against Adelaide.

The visitor Roar took the lead after 15 minutes. A set piece saw Andreu judged to have handballed inside the box with the resultant penalty being taken by Dimitri Petratos. Petratos' powerful strike evaded Andrew Redmayne for a 0-1 scoreline.

The night went from bad to worse for Andreu, as he added an own goal to his penalty handball. After giving away the free kick in the first place, he failed to maintain an appropriate bodyshape in the 6 yard box as Coronoa whipped in a fast ball into the middle of the area. A desperate flick of his leg couldn't stop the ball rebounding off his back, giving Redmayne no chance at all.

The self-inflicted wounds came again to see Roar take a 3-0 lead. A long ball down the right flank found Brandon Borello, his first time cut-back found Jamie Maclaren. The gun striker turned and fired, an unfortunate deflection from Alberto Aguilar caused the ball to tumble past the outstretched arm of Redmayne.

Thankfully for the Wanderers they were the next to score. Jade North gave away a foul with a poor tackle on Brendon Santalab, just outside the D semi-circle and right in front. Romeo Castelen stepped up to take the free kick. Jamie Young made a complete mess of his wall, giving the Wanderers a straight shot at the goal. The bad placement was compounded by a terrible reaction to Castelen's shot. The winger fired straight at goal, the keeper had taken a step to his left before the ball had been struck, putting him off-balance as the shot whistled past at a thunderous pace.

5 minutes before half-time the Wanderers cut the Roar's lead down to 1 goal. Dimas Delgado spotted the Roar defence playing far too high up the park, and set Brendon Santalab a task with a neat ball over the top. Santalab burned James Donachie and his idiotic man-bun for pace, then turned Donachie around, fired at near post past Jamie Young to make the game 3-2.

Momentum stayed with the Wanderers in the second half, and it didn't take long for Castlen to secure his brace and put the Wanderers level with Brisbane. A set piece was cleared by Corono but only as far as Scott Jamieson. The fullback lofted the ball back into the penalty area where it was knocked down by Nikolai Topor-Stanley into the path of Mitch Nichols. The ball sat up reasonably well and he shot at goal, it was palmed away by Jamie Young but Mark Bridge pounced, his shot rebounding off Young only to fall right at the feet of Castelen who fired into the roof of the net to make the game 3-3.

Until this game no team had ever come from 3 goals behind to take the lead. On the hour mark Dimas fired a free kick into the penalty box, where Young elected to punch, it looped into the air. Thomas Broich & Romeo Castelen tangled as the ball came down, Broich apparently losing it in the air, allowing Castelen to strike a thunderbolt on the half-volley that blew past Jamie Young.

Brisbane, having to score to send the game into extra time, began to press higher and higher, and eventually that paid dividends. A counter-attack started by Hervas ended with Tommy Oar, who released Henrique, he attempted a shot only to screw it wide but perfectly into the path of Maclaren who had a tap-in from 6 yards out to bring the game level once again. Extra time inched closer and closer with neither team willing to lose in normal time.

The first half of extra time began with Wanderers dominating the play, with a handful of chances going begging from Bridge & Castelen among others before they finally took one in the 102nd minute. Shannon Cole's neat work in the middle found Mark Bridge who played a 1-2 with Dario Vidosic. A placed shot had Young diving to push the ball away, Bridge reacted first, he pounced on the loose ball and slammed the ball across the face of the goal, Vidosic's near post run was rewarded as the marquee attacker flicked over Young to make the score an incredible 5-4.

Brisbane were out on their feet, and even with the help of Queensland referee Peter Green on their side, weren't able to equalise again to take the game to penalties. The Wanderers triumphed after 120 minutes of scintillating football, and they will face Adelaide next Sunday in their 3rd attempt to win the A-League Championship.

As WSW members & fans, we are so privileged to be part of something so very special as a club & supporter group, & for me personally, something I often do not appreciate until the moment has passed.  From the very moment I start packing for Adelaide, I will cherish very single second.  My season 1 home shirt is ready to go...

It was like a replay of the wellington game. They had 3 attacks and scored 3 goals. As it was then it was quite early in the piece when we were 3 down. If you are going to come back from 3 behind then the game needs to have enough time left in it and we had that. I thought we can still do it here if we score a quick goal (mind you I thought the same in the welly game) but of course I wouldn't have put a cent on it happening.

That free kick from romeo gave us plenty of time and more importantly belief. It wasn't like we were being played off the park.

**** me dead, 20,084 people - a Pirtek Stadium WSW record in the final game.

What a match. One of, if not the best match in A-League history. Go on and win the thing in Adelaide next weekend.

We will give it an almighty try mate.  Don't forget to keep us updated on the PAX either :)  BTW 20,043 on mine.

Wow. Mine was 17,172 at about 9pm. That's over 3000 in a couple of hours.

I hear you have the best seat in the house...  :good:

Hah, that's what I text to my niece last night as we were trying to book our tickets. It was absolutely nail biting trying to get best price. The time we spent checking in with each other, some bast@rd nicked our ticket option. But whatevs, we got happily got fleeced :woah:  and we're going to the game

Delilah followed the match in Fiji, and FFA's Statistician Andrew Howe (an old friend) emailed me from Egypt where he is holidaying. He said he was excitedly listening to the ABC radio coverage of the game while wandering around the temple complex in Luxor, about 1000km south of Cairo.

He added that he tweeted the National League record comeback info while trying to concentrate on a description of how Alexander the Great's entry into Egypt was documented on the temple walls. Some records will truely stand the test of time!

Sydney-born, Andrew now lives in Adelaide (and will back in time to be next to the Fox Sports team for the GF). He said he hopes as many WSW supporters as possible make their way over, to add to the crowd and atmosphere.

My mate and I have a guess at the crowd based on the number of cars parked around Richie Benaud oval as we walk in.  Last night we thought a big one from the number of cars and people in the streets.

But as someone once said, we have Lies, damned lies, and statistics.  And that gets used for the crowds at Pirtek.  How often have we had a crowd of only 12K when I would have said 15K?  So last night for our final game, we broke 20K and that was great.  Here are the Pirtek record crowds - too early for last night - http://www.austadiums.com/stadiums/stadiums_crowds.php?id=85

The AFL and NRL are masters at crowd counting and maybe the FFA need to learn something from them.  From all the noise last night, I thought there were 35K there, and can't wait until we come back to a larger and rectangular stadium.

My other story from last night was when the Roar flare was lit, someone new to our area, high in the Western stand, starting yelling, where is David Gallop, Roar need to lose points?  He had had a few to drink and kept going strongly, so I turned around and showed him where DG was sitting only 4m away.  And then he just went to another level ... thankfully for all of us, we scored and he forgot about DG :)

    Watched the game.

    • 20k capacity crowd huh? How so with empty seats in the RBB? Oh well, it was good to experience the NT full again.

I'm always curious about what happens in the half time talk. What does Popa say, how does it say it, how do the players respond etc. It was was interesting (to me) to at least watch Popa give his talk before ET last night. Serious, not too animated, the boys transfixed by what her was saying.

Haven't read any further comments after Lloydy's post (so it might have been addressed) ..... but yes.

Can anyone explain what that was all about??

What a blunder... thankfully for us!

The timing of that blunder was extremely crucial - we really needed to hit back immediately. If it stayed 3-0 until HT, I feel there wouldn't have been a comeback. Getting the goal immediately instilled belief in everyone, players and fans alike.

To me, it looked like he was teampting him to hit it, and then intended to shut it down as soon as he did. You can see he sticks his leg out rather uselessly and the ball rockets past him.

Reminded me of Cole's free kick in derby 3 I think it was, where he curled it round the wall and past the left hand post to make it 1-1. I recall the comentary at the time said the wall wasn't I the right place. Seems to be the same here.

Their keeper ****ed it. He shouldn't have started for the near post and kept his position and he would've saved it imo. Though that wall was still rubbish lol.

    Funny story from last night.

A friend that sits next to me in the Western stand couldn't make it last night. We arrived to find a young guy had bought my friends seat. He had arrived in Australia from Spain 3 days ago, he was a huge Barca fan AND a close friend of Corona from Brisbane Roar, which is why he had come to the game to watch his friend play. He had been following his friends progress in the A-League from Spain and was excited to see him play live.

Well he was more than happy to find himself surrounded by Spanish speakers and although he was barracking for Roar, he was astounded by the atmosphere and said that there are few games in Spain with as much atmosphere. He is going to be here in Syndey for 12 months on a working visa and is going to join us next season to watch our beloved Wanderers! Nice initiation to Australian football for him! :-)

I bumped in a guy from the north of Italy in Bay 23, been in Australia 2 years on a working visa, first game in Australia he has watched, said lots of Italian games don't get as crazy as that & couldn't believe that Australian's go mental over football like we did last night. He is a Milan supporter but last night he said he will never forget what he saw at Parramatta Stadium.

It seemed to me that the wall was set to protect the left side of the goal but Roar also had a player stood directly behind the wall whose job it was to use the wall as leverage to jump and attempt to cut out the shot over the wall. This also keeps the wall on the ground in case the free kick goes under a jumping wall, as is often the case. However, having only 4 in the wall for a free kick in a central position is a gamble.

The keeper seemed to have no confidence in the wall as he edged to the side the wall was protecting as the kick was taken. He should have trusted the wall and just protected the right side of the goal.

As it was, the last player in the wall seemed to **** himself and backed away as the free kick was taken, taking half the non existent wall with Him.

    Schoolboy defending at best.

100%. If the keeper doesn't trust the wall then he is at fault because he should be the one organizing it and telling them what to do. Unless you're a world class keeper, you stick to defending the far post because if the kick taker is able to get the ball over/around the wall and into the side the wall is covering then there is very little chance of you saving it. If I recall correctly the keeper had a pretty clear view of the ball as well.

Totally agree, if the keeper was in the right spot he would barely have had to dive to save it. The wall was a mess but had little to do with the goal. Their keeper fluffed it by moving to his left as Castalen hit it.

Gotta say that I was so wrapped with being in the RBB with the likes of FCB, Lloydy, Valter & Wal, after a great session with the Bav crew, that even at 0-3 down it was a case of 'Euphoria'. The win made the night even sweeter of course, but it's always about the 'family'.

Only fly in the ointment was three plastics next to me who stood around bitching & barely getting into the chants during the entire game. They would've been better off sitting down with Scouse Roar and the other Meow turkeys

I think I might have been in the same row as you... some of their mates at the other end joined in for "A Call to Arms" but that was about it. They were a bit sheepish when I caught them talking when looking over at them and chanting directly at them.

Voice still a little sore but well worth it... still buzzing and just watched the replay on SBS, looking forward to watching the Foxsports coverage (replay at 5:30pm Tuesday afternoon) as Simon Hill is much better than the SBS crew.

Always love being in the RBB when I can and being a part of it... already got knocked back for the trip to Adelaide... damn Foxsports, if only it was a Saturday afternoon I may have been able to win the argument!!

    Re the RBB

From the far diagonal end of the stadium, the WST guys stood out in contrast to the magnificent rest of the RBB.

They waved a few flags but didn't appear to do much more than that.

Is that a fair assessment (as I said, I was a long away off)??

None of my business,  but it looked a bit sad when everyone else was working so hard. It would be good if rifts had been healed by next season, since there doesn't seem to have been any progress this season??
