  • Duke Double Opens Stadium

    mack

The VAR handed the Wanderers a priceless gift of a Mitch Duke penalty he buried, scoring the Wanderers a 2-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners in their Western Sydney Stadium A-League opener.

With the opening ceremony activities over, the 17000-plus Wanderers supporters filled the stadium with noise along with the sizeable contingent of travelling Mariners. An early injury to Tarek Elrich saw Daniel Wilmering come on with Daniel Georgievski swapping to the right flank, the fullback cutting inside in the 20th minute but his weak foot shot tamely went wide.

The Mariners opened the score in the 35th minute. A seemingly innocuous attack down the left flank by Jordan Murray result in the ball falling to the feet of midfielder Milan Duric, he lashed a shot at goal, it took a deflection that turned the shot from going over the bar to instead loop over the head of Daniel Lopar.

Western Sydney fought back well before half-time and they earned their equaliser through Captain Mitch Duke. The simplest of set pieces, the inswinging corner bought the Mariners undone. Pirmin Schwegler delivering a pin-point cross to the edge of the 6 yard box, Duke Rose high attacking the ball & flicking it on & under Mark Birighitti at the un-manned near post.

The Wanderers continued to turn up the heat, Kosta Grozos shooting from the edge of the area, forcing Birighitti into fumbling, Mo Adam was following in like any good striker does and his potential tap-in was smothered by a diving second save.

Georgievski was the catalyst for the Wanderers winner, he lobbed the ball into the penalty area for a Schwegler diving header back across goal, the desperate Mariners defence lashed a boot out, flicking it into the path of defender Dylan Fox who had stuck his arm out like a construction crane, making contact & giving the VAR a reason to intervene to send Duke to the spot. Captain Duke took the penalty well, sending Birighitti the wrong way and the Wanderers held on for the last 10 minutes, the perfect return to A-League football in Parramatta.

Western Sydney will face Melbourne Victory in Round 2, at the Docklands stadium on Friday, October 18th.

Not the best performance on field but since we hardly ever win round one I’ll take it.

Lopar was great, Jurman is already running our back line, Schwegler is up there with the best players we’ve ever had at the club.

On the other hand I’m still not convinced with McGowan (if Ziegler ever plays I reckon he’s more at risk than Tass), Georgievski was cooked by the 60th minute and Meier was terrible. I’m willing to give him a break because he’s clearly nowhere near match fit but I’m worried.

Part of the problem was Yeboah being out meant we had zero pace up front so the Mariners could play a high back line, compress the midfield and dominate in the middle. As soon as Adam came on they had to drop deep to stop him getting in behind which opened up the midfield and let us play through easier (I didn’t think Sullivan was that bad and Grozos was good but Sullivan only had 10mins with Adam on and the extra space that created).

Overall it was better than last year as our previous #mentality would have had us concede an equaliser in those last few minutes But we’re behind some of the other teams who’ve played so far this weekend.

Gotta say there was one moment yesterday when Faghani missed a hit on one of our boys near the CCM goal in the second half and I had to stand up & give him a (politically correct) verbal serve...it was almost like being back in old Bay 65 again.

That hit was the one got Georgievski a card. The hit by Murray was not sanctioned. There was an advantage being played but from where I sat, Murray should have got a red card. At least a yellow imo.

Then again, if Murray was sent off so would Georgievski.

I'm second row from the top and went solo as the better half, at nine months pregnant, was not keen to climb those stairs! Particularly if she had to get up to pee at all!

There was a guy in the row above me who didn't come back after half time as he'd had a few beers and couldn't find the gusto to make the climb again. Watched from the corso level and/or the bar.

Funny how all those Sea Bogans whining about Georgevski have said zero on the hit by Murray beforehand.

Oh well...guess when you live in Gosford you never worry about assaults committed by someone with an Anglo name :ninja:

What a feeling to be back at Wanderland. And the catchup in the Royal Oak was a fab start to the proceedings. Great to see so many forumites there....i haven't met you all, hope to do so on future occassions, but i saw/chatted with Manfred, Stringer, whacko, Pseudonym, AndyPK, JackDoff

On the game, we did the job. I was comfortable enough with our performance and I'm confident enough with our potential that i think we will be very competitive.

I watched Meier and its clear he's not match fit. But he was watching the play like a hawk and looking for space and his passing was laser sharp. He's got the goods.

I didn't rate Sullivan. He looked out of position and late to react to some of the play, but i am happy to be corrected

I thought Wilmering was great. Alert and responsive to what was going on around him.

    Jurman was epic

Weve got a wzy to go and next week will be a real test to convert potential to actual dominant, goal scoring play

    Grozos was better.

Haha i hope he grows better given his raps.

but Silviera was surprisingly quite dynamic, good touch and very nippy.

    Stats that matter

Dispossessed by Baccus on multiple occasions

Couldn't win the ball off Baccus or Grozos.

And the one that irritates is that he chose not to fight for a contract where he was developed. And just because Stajcic made it clear he was coming to raid and, from what I hear, our boys were told in no uncertain not to trial at the Mariners. For me he is disloyal.

Im just saying from a neutral point of view the kid looks very promising on debut and displayed the kind of dynamic qualities we lack in that position, especially given the loss of Majewski. Theres plenty of other stats that shined a bright light on a kid on debut too.

I can't fault an 18 year old signing to another club on a 3 year senior contract that would be worth $160k at a minimum and getting first team playing time on top of that. He probably would have been on a 1 year scholarship deal at WSW and spending most of his time playing NYL.

From what I heard in press conferences leading up to this, Babbel has said his side is able to play multiple different systems... could this mean he is willing to play a different system (formation???) against Vuck or Sydney???

I hope so because we were exposed in midfield BUT how good is Schwegler. Multiple times he won the ball back with great sliding challenges.

Meier looks well off the pace. Although he was very lazy and lethargic he has only been here for 2-3 weeks. He played decent for 20 minutes (one shot he took did trouble Birighitti), looks technically and tactically good (always looking and scanning play). Hopefully by at least the Sydney Derby we can really start to see his true self.

This is one comment on the Wanderers instagram page I saw from a German fan about him after the game.

    christollick_94

Believe me, I have seen him playing with Eintracht Frankfurt for a very long time! he does not need many opportunities you do not see him that often during the game, but he keeps on believing you will have a lot of fun with him.

he will still score some goals for you. He is a striker of the old school.

for some reason I can’t get the thought of Marcus grabbing a mike and singing this in the centre circle

can’t you all feel the winds of change after that ?

Mate, Markus would be brilliant as a schlager singer (sort of like soft pop/folk).

In fact, he should cover this:

On another note, loved the smoking ceremony, and more importantly the reaction of the supporters, sometimes people don't see the value in those sort of things (and that is fine that is their choice) but it doesnt hurt to show respect and great to see everyone did.  I know behind the scenes the club is currently putting together a RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan being the first A League club to do so hopefully) to further engage the Indigenous community seeing as Western Sydney has the highest Indigenous population in Australia (not as a ratio of population but pure number wise) so to see this sort of thing is awesome.  Hopefully one day an Indigenous jersey comes out for an FFA Cup game or something it will look smoking in those colours.

I should have mentioned this in my earlier post  - which Manfred did in one of his.

I loved the smoking ceremony  too - and even better, the didgeridoo sound reverberating around the stadium was absolutely awesome!

It's a shame that important moments like that (and the recognition of previous players including Ante  which also happened) can't be signalled somehow - maybe on the big screen, so that the crowd knows what is about to happen, and those moments get full respect and attention.

I thought the response from the crowd was good also, considering the ceremony had to break through people's conversations and the general background noise of the stadium etc. I hope we see more of that involvement, and what you mention in your reference to the RAP!

    Good stuff! :good:

Our old mate Dmyxda is (I believe) in on this.

Next Members Committee meeting I'll try and get more details and pass on the positive comments. And yes, an indigenous themed shirt would be deadly.

Yes - please pass on my congrats.

We are so far behind other countries in terms of this sort of inclusion, and it was fantastic to see it in operation last night.

So much that the Club is obviously working on, and getting right this time around.

I love the fact MB started an obviously underdone AMFG.  Many coaches today would leave him on the sideline until he was 100% ready and before you know it a quarter, or possibly more, of the season would pass.  Match fitness is what he needs and we only have him for one season.  He knows his body and obviously MB knows (and backed) his quality and experience.  MB said he signed him because he gives us something different to what we already have.  AMFG never has been quick and at 36, never will be.  We already have players who offer pace.

AMFG is capable of giving us quality in moments of the game that the A-League very rarely sees.  He obviously isn't ready yet but it'll only take him a few weeks until we see his true worth If he continues to start.

I was thinking back to how Popa treated Shinji who, to some extent, came in on the back of a similar lead up time with perhaps even more expectations of being a creative influence on the team. Shinji was kid-gloved for a few games before he really got things flowing, which perhaps some would argue is how Markus should treat Meier. On reflection I think Babbel got it very right yesterday with Fussballgott, and agree with what you say.
