  • Golec Guns Down Guangzhou

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers will take a 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg of their Asian Champions League quarter final after a remarkable match against ACL Champions Guangzhou Evergrande were beaten by a goal to Antony Golec, followed by finishing the match with just 9 men on the park.

Golec claimed the winner on the hour mark, cutting inside from the left flank before delivering a low cross that beat everyone including the Chinese goalkeeper, who was frozen by the run of Tomi Juric, before nestling into the bottom right hand corner.

Evergrande saw two red cards and their World Cup winning manager Marcello Lippi may face further sanctions as chaos reigned following the dismissals of Zeng Linpeng in the 88th minute and Gao Lin in the 90th.

Shannon Cole has the best chance of the first half, after Haliti stormed down the wing he put a wonderful cross that beat the leaping Evergrande defence, only to see Cole glance the header wide when he should have put his side in front. Liao Lisheng smacked a ball moments before the break that Covic turned away.

The second half was all Wanderers from the opening stages, Tomi Juric menacing the diminutive Chinese defenders and being the cause of the goal from Golec despite not getting a touch. Vitor Saba made his Parramatta Stadium debut and made an immediate impact, gliding around his opponents and drawing numerous fouls, while also showing an appetite for the hard defensive that he will require playing in the A-League for Western Sydney.

Chaos reigned in the last moments of the game, as Linpeng smashed La Rocca with an elbow and was shown a straight red, followed minutes later by compatriot Lin who kicked Vitor Saba in the face and quickly joined Linpeng for an early shower. At that point Lippi stormed onto the pitch and confronted the referee, who eventually regained control, denied Juric a penalty in the final seconds then ended the match.

The result means any draw or win for the Wanderers will see them through to the Semi-Final, while even a 2-1 loss would be enough to progress on away goals.

The Wanderers next match is Leg 2 of the Asian Champions League quarter finals against Guangzhou Evergrande, in China, played on Wednesday the 27th of August.

FYI Bozza has a Facebook page you can message him and tell the c**t he's not welcome around us with a s**t attitude like that.

Also remind him of Karma... That Lippi corksucker won a World Cup with a dive back in 2006. Ironically knocking out our boys with 2 seconds to go. I love it.

Actually Italy won the WC after beating Germany 2-0 in the semis and beating France on penalties. The only dive I saw was Malouda falling over when Materazzi came near him which earned France a penalty.

in fairness, he is entitled to his opinion. The guy is usually on our side of the fence with things. We can't just tell everyone to get fuarked who disagrees with us. Would be different if it was an obvious constant agenda, but its not.

I haven't seen anything yet myself, but some were suggesting he was riding on the opinion of Ognenovski, any potential truth to that? If so, it's just bad journalism.

I've seen a replay of the second red card, and I wholeheartedly agree with the decision. Gao Lin makes a second movement with his right leg at Saba's head, in my view that didn't happen unless he meant it. He was trying to be sneaky but it was spotted by the ref. Looks like his shin caught Saba in the cheek or eye, and if I were hit in the eye with a shin I'm pretty sure I'd be holding my face in pain too.

Man have their supporters acted like the world OWES them, have been telling their supporters straight up facts and truth on the Wanderers full time chat comment section after the game on Facebook, got 30 likes for speaking up to one of their supporters who was an ass and said to a fellow wanderer he was a girl, straight after that he removed his own comments. Funny as hell.

Evergrande seem to have the same kind of superiority complex and air of self importance / entitlement that ESFC have, similar kind of club ethos.

Its been absolutely hilarious reading torrents of abuse (obviously via google translate) - makes youtube commenters look like nobel laureates!

Might be time to mention the Tiananmen square massacre and get all the threads blocked by Chinese censors.

It is two days after the event. My voice box went out after 25 minutes and is still in recovery mode, so I know I've been to Wanderland. I also know that we have beaten Guangzhou, but I am still struggling to actually believe it.

No marque players, no Castelen, only 20 minutes of Saba, the squad still incomplete, a refurbished, somewhat makeshift defense with a 16 year young right back, and yet we beat them. Is that unbelievable, or what? That's what I call maximum use of existing resources. Popa is a bloody genius.

That has become very evident in the last few days. On the plus side, I now have a 'most hated side in Asia' (teams outside of Aus anyway, ESFC and Victory are a given). They seem very different to the other sides we have played so far in Asia, who have generally been class. The Kawasaki fans were nothing short of exceptional in Japan; before, during and after the game.

I'm still getting spam and abuse on my Instagram photos, because I've got pro-Wanderers hashtags!!

I'm surprised they aren't bored yet.

Lol they are still that MAD, funny as **** that they are embarrassing themselves and their club. Can't wait till the guys hopefully give them a hiding, just state the fact that their team couldn't beat a team that has a budget of 2.75 million. Then watch the madness begin.

It's safe to say they join Melbourne victory and Sydney fc as our rivals you would think right?

    • Obviously I'm sure he assumed he wouldn't get caught, but how much would he be getting to risk another year or two on a likely 6 figure wage even if he had to move to a new club.
    • Is that why he's forever on the ground. Trying to rack up yellow cards. Makes sense now.
    • ^ Yep, exactly that, took me a while to find a picture of it. NPL TV uses the camera position adjacent to the commentary box as the only location. For the Women's season there is a temporary scaffold placed behind the scoreboard, which I believe is done in order to give a better view of the crowd and to avoid the setting sun in afternoon games (commonly seen in afternoon NPL games).
