  • Wanderers Draw Again

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have doubled their A-League Premiership points tally with a draw against the Newcastle Jets tonight at Parramatta Stadium.

The Wanderers were the far better of the two outfits, but could only take the point away after some sloppy defending let Marcos Flores 27th minute equaliser following Tomi Juric's stunning volley in the 12th.

Edison Montano the big man upfront for Newcastle should have give the away side the lead in the 10th minute. A long punt from Ben Kennedy, taking his place in the starting lineup as Phil Stubbins dropped #1 Mark Birighitti to the bench, saw Shannon Cole bring the ball down but directly into the path of Montano. Ante Covic scrambled back to the goal line but slipped on the turf. All the striker needed was to calmly pass the ball into the open net but instead scooped it high and wide. It was embarrassing play all round.

Two minutes later Juric did open the scoring. His 9th A-League goal was a pearler, Vitor Saba delivering a deep corner to the back post. The Jets fell asleep and left Juric wide open and he took full advantage, blasting a left foot volley through the crowd in the penalty area and past Kennedy.

Marcos Flores came within a whisker of equalising in the 19th minute. Montano, on the left flank lobbed in a cross that Cole stupidly headed back across goal instead of out of play. Flores thumped a powerful volley from the edge of the area and it nearly cracked the crossbar in half with Ante Covic stood still as a statue.

The warning wasn't heeded by the Wanderers defence and they let Flores get his equaliser. David Carney, the man who cost Australia the Asian Cup, chipped into Flores who was given the freedom of the penalty area with Daniel Alessi getting caught in no-man's land when he should have been marking the dangerous attacking midfielder's run into the box. Flores brought the ball down with a single touch then slipped the ball past the onrushing Covic with a neat backheel.

That goal signalled the second bus parking at Parramatta Stadium in the space of a week, the Wanderers dominating crosses, corners, shots and territory but being unable to get back in front before half-time, Nikita Rukavytsya having the best chance with his fearsome left peg, rifling a long range effort after beating Nick Cowburn all ends up. His strike was palmed away by Kennedy.

Tomi Juric came the closest to a goal in the second half, Rukavytsya going past three Jets defender before laying it off for Juric. Juric's first time curling effort curled back in on goal like a guided missile but it impacted the post and bounced out for a goal kick. Juric had another good chance in the 77th, getting on the end of a short cross he leapt and made good contact with the head but it lacked power and was directed straight at the keeper.

As the Wanderers pressed for the winner substitute Labinot Haliti near stole the three points at the death, after some pinball in the box it fell to the winger who lashed a right foot strike that would have been on target had it not been for a lucky block from a Jets defender that saw the ball skew out for another corner.

Nothing came from that or any other chance in the final few minutes, Western Sydney taking 1 point from a game that could easily have gone either way, the Wanderers wayward defending in the first half only being punished once while the Jets got away with the help of the woodwork and lucky deflections. Tony Popovic and his men would be the unhappier of the two teams as this makes two games in a row they were the better team on the night but unable to prove it on the scoreboard.

For perhaps the first time since the inaugural Sydney Derby, it will be the blue quarter of Sydney that will go in as favourites. With 6th place already 4 points behind and 1st placed Perth Glory a full 16 points ahead of the Wanderers the Red & Black need to start picking up points before the fixture pileup set to take place due to the Club World Cup.

The Wanderers next game is the Sydney Derby, on Saturday the 29th of November at Parramatta Stadium, kickoff at 7:30PM.

F##k can't stand Ognenovski smurfs defender. Can the blokes from RBB with the mic say something about him and everyone else repeats, just to put the prick down.

Beat them, simple as that, that is the best way to get back at him and ESFC. Focus on the game and then at the end when we have won give it out. Some players feed off supporters being against them and I suspect Og the dog might be one of those types.

No need for put down songs in my book, just beat the *****ers. Popa shouldn't need much motivation for this one.

if you look at the top 3 clubs all there new signings this season have been pretty good from the start and i cant say that about our new players. We have had flashes here and there but no consistent output. Hopefully its a time on the park thing but with all the games coming up it might be after the AFC break that things start to really gel.

The team needs more fire power up front. Not enough shots and we need an attacking midfielder who will feed the ball to strikers and also who can score. Juric was the only player who had a shot and hit the bar. Also, the formation gotta change to more attacking style like 4-4-2 or 4-4-3 which will see more goals and pressure on the other teams. were desperate at this stage and we need goals, 6 games and we picked up 2 points.

The new owners should have signed a marquee. Every team that play us seem to be like world class, a week later their getting smashed.

    Cole?

Red Bulls could be a week from finishing their season - Cahill for a guest stint to keep him playing up to the Asia Cup?

ahhh cahill... the man who is too good for the HAL , what is he pushing now 36 , 37.... anyway moving on...... DERBY WEEK B1TCHES

Oh well, some good improvements but not quite there yet.

Washing the scarves proved to be ineffective - but they did smell nice - until the beer shower after the first goal - they then smelt better.. :-)

How good was the Tifo though.. :-)

    Cole?

Champion team > team of champions.

frankly I reckon if you think we need a marquee to turn our season around - there's a team east of us that might be better suited for you. :P

what Popa a wsw are building is philosophy. something that our club will be implementing from our youth to our seniors. look at what Gombau is doing at United, and what Ange did at the roar ( which seems to have fallen apart in his absence ) - they've/they'd built something, a system, a philosophy that has paid off. United play great football, and roar won a crapload of crap in four uber-succesfull years.

I love how we play, I love the formation we play in - its great for defence, and just as great for the counter attacking football that I find so exciting.

oh, and we did sign a marquee in spiranovic - who in my opinion - was the best player in the league last season, and is set to be the same again.

First of all, Popa will not be changing his formation. He hasn't done it over the last few seasons so can't see him doing it for however long he spends with us. The reason is simple, we can change over team week to week but everyone knows the role they have ti play wherever they are in the team. Not all coaches use this philosophy but we know Popa does, he has found a formation that works for our club and the players we've signed and he isn't going to change it now.

Not enough firepower? Juric, Castelen and Ruka with saba feeding balls through to the attack. Can't ask for much more than that!!

The marquee option would have been used by Popa if he found someone that could be used to benefit our team. Popa has come to the conclusion that there is nobody out there that we could use that will benefit our style/system/way we play. Popa wasn't going to add just anyone to our squad, but as soon as he found someone that is high quality and a good fit for our team (think Ruka) he will go for them. The opportunity to sign Ono only came up a week or so before the start of S1, I'm sure if he didn't come available Popa wouldn't have just signed a player for the sake of it.

what are we going to do about the passengers in the RBB

is this being brought up somewhere?

Being brought up plenty of times over the past few seasons but nobody has brought up a suitable solution for the problem. There will be plenty of new faces in the RBB this season too, so it may take some time to blood these active fans into the RBB.

If it keeps up I will have to come out of  active support retirement lol If the gate was open I would pop through and show the young'uns how its done.

I've been very uninspired by Poljak and La Rocca this year. They're not involved enough, and when they are it's slow motion or the passes are woeful. I'd go further and have the starting team as you have set for the goal chase. I'd like to see Poljak get a rest (he is way too slow at the moment, so he's either off his game or losing it), push Spira into DM where he can provide an outlet, push Hamill to CB and start Cole at RB.

The other thing we're not doing this season that has been a hallmark of previous seasons is press their defenders. Dino was rubbish, but I loved the work ethic he had to chase the ball and harass the defenders relentlessly - we're giving up too much easy position on transition.

Unfortunately La Rocca and Poljak are our two best CDM's (despite Spira who shoukd really be playing CB till the WC) and unfortunately trifiro just doesn't add enough passing wise whilst Popa doesn't think that Perkatis or Baccus are not in our best starting XI. Popa's view is that they would much rather keep defensively strong with ball winning CDM's rather than run the risk of having a more expansive ball playing CM in the CDM role. I tend to agree, it is hurting us going forward in attack being unable to break down teams who will sit deep against us but theoretically will be beneficial against teams that will be more open against us (MV, Adelaide, SydFC, Brisbane).

Unfortunately Juric and Saba don't have the pace to defensively press as well as others players have done so in the past (think Dino, Santa, Bridge and Ono). What you'll find is that in our last two games, we have tried to press but because we are just a bit slower in that defensive press, teams are finding ways to play out when we press high up the field.

We need a CM that's more of an all rounder to play alongside Poljak.

What I would like to see if the talk that La Rocca wants to move to the MLS is true is for us to sign an Asian #8 marquee in the January window.

Maybe, but in the past couple of games we've been good without finding the net, and Cahill knows how to find it.

Anyway, if not Cahill then Thierry Henry will be available on the same day  :xnod:

Tomi isn't going to be playing 90mins over and over with out schedule so while Santalab's out I wouldn't mind seeing Haliti do that sort of job in the games Tomi starts on the bench. Labi has the engine to keep hassling their back line and is still a goal threat. Then unleash Tomi after 60mins.

Problem is Haliti has never offered anything in the games he has started. All his major performances have come off the bench, where his pace is useful against tired defenders.

Loving the Asian Championes chant in the end.. I hope we use it more throughout the season.

Tis good, but I prefer the simpler call response type....

    WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

    CHAMPIONS OF ASIA

You could even do this to the East / West stand instead of WDWSF, or the RBB could split and do it themselves.

First time out for the championes chant but thought a bit slow for my preference, but will catch on

Yeah when he starts I see him as the player who lays the groundwork for Tomi in the games where Tomi starts from the bench to get a rest. If he scores it's a bonus.

The other option, which I'd be very interested in seeing, would be to start Haliti on the left and try Ruka at 9. I don't think we've ever really played a striker who has genuine lightning pace.

I'm hoping Popa plays his best 11 as often as he can for the next month or so. They need game time together and then they'll become a very good team. We need points now. Only one or two changes per game if we can get away with it but always revolving around the players who played the last two games. We aren't far away from doing some serious damage and I hope it's this Saturday.

Then revaluate in the Asian Cup break if need be.

Players should be rewarded for playing well by keeping their place in the team.

I liken this to season 1, where we had a whole group of players learning each other's games, and it took time to gel.

The derby this week is our Adelaide 6-1 game. I'll settle for 4-1.

Lol I would settle for a 1-0 win via an og the dog own goal in the 90th minute. Then I hope he cannot walk off the pitch at the end because of cramp.

I'm sorry, but there wasn't 6500 empty seats there tonight.

Looking at the game on TV later tonight, there were plenty of spare seats.

blame the poor timeslot 5pm on a saturday during a heat wave weekend....with around 50 away fans there 14,000 odd was not bad....if the away fans would turn up we'd be looking at 16,000 for each of these two games. which means around 2000 members failed to show for whatever reason.

On another note......... my brother walked up and bought tickets for himself and his son at 4 pm, so this game was never a sell out.

Actually it was, at least at one point.

My brother in law tried to buy one ticket anywhere inside the stadium on Wednesday, nothing.

I tried to buy one ticket, anywhere inside the stadium on Friday, nothing.

The ticket situation is becoming infuriating.

lol it will be one game I bet he is praying he doesn't get cramp :D The ultimate karma would be og the dog going down with cramp and the closest person is Saba for a little word in his ear (If Hamill who originally went down with cramp in the 1st game cannot be there).
