  • Wanderers Gift Derby To Sydney FC

    mack

The worst on field 2nd half performance in the history of the young club saw the Western Sydney Wanderers hand Sydney FC their first home derby win by 3 goals to 1, all three for Sydney coming as a result of errors from the team from the West.

The Wanderers came into the match knowing they were let to lose, or even concede a goal at the Sydney Football Stadium in the derby. The first half proved typical derby fare, with neither side making an impact on the scoreboard as precious few chances appeared.

The game sprung into life early in the second half however. In the 48th minute a cross into the centre by Adam D'Apuzzo bounced off Brendon Santalab. The ball fell to the benefit of Shinji Ono, the Japanese international threw threw his right boot sideways to smash home from 6 yards out.

Mere minutes later it looked like the Wanderers would double their lead. A cross from the left flank by Bridge floated toward the back post, and Richard Garcia managed to drag down both Santalab and Youssouf Hersi as they attempted to attack the cross.

Even though normal #1 penalty taker Shinji Ono was on the field, it was Mark Bridge who took on the responsibility of the penalty. Janjetovic made a show of pointing to his left, and that was where Bridge hit is penalty, straight into the arms of Janjetovic. The miss was the clear turning point for the match and a Sydney FC comeback was inevitable.

On the hour mark it was the unusual source of Matt Jurman who levelled the game. Polenz had knocked down Garcia, giving Petkovic the chance to launch a ball into the mixer from deep on the Sydney FC left flank. Ante Covic came flying out of his goalmouth to punch, the ball sliced into the unknowing Jurman who collected his first ever A-League goal without trying.

In the 64th minute the entire stadium drew breath as Youssouf Hersi attempted an audacious long range effort. Hersi guided the ball toward the top right corner only for the flying Janjetovic to block the shot out for a corner. The resulting corner was hit long to Polenz who smashed a volley well wide.

New signing Golgol Mebrahtu was given his Western Sydney debut in place of Shinji Ono but suffered a disaster as he was injured seconds after entering play. Mebrahtu was then replaced by Labinot Haliti, and early reports are that the Mebrahtu injury is an anterior cruciate ligament injury that could see him out of action for potentially a year.

The evening turned into a nightmare for Western Sydney as Sydney FC took the lead as a result of one of the worst individual mistakes in the history of the A-League. Captain Michael Beauchamp received a short free kick from Ante Covic, and under no pressure decided to try to pass the ball back to the keeper. The pass was woeful, rolling 4 yards straight into the path of Garcia, who gleefully tapped into the open net as Covic dived desperately to block the shot even as he was out of the penalty area.

During stoppage time Jerome Polenz made the 4th major error of the night. The referee missed a blatant handball from a Sydney FC player and Polenz looked to catch the ball to play on from an expected foul only for referee Kris Griffiths-Jones to awarding a penalty against Polenz. Ali Abbas stepped up to fire home in front of the home support, Sydney FC winning their first Derby at home by three goals to one.

The Wanderers are making a habit of mistakes in recent weeks and it has cost the side any chance of retaining the Premiership, and may cost the club their Asian Champions League place if Adelaide continue to rise. In 2014 the Wanderers record stands at 6 losses, 2 draws and 3 wins, a stat that will not please manager Tony Popovic one bit.

The left side combination of Bridge and D'Apuzzo was toothless, their only bright notes being the aimless crosses from deep that lead to the lucky deflection to Ono for the first goal, and the penalty won that any competent defender would not have allowed themselves to give away. Their failure was compounded by Bridge missing a penalty. The likes of Haliti, Cole, Heffernan and Appiah will push for selection in the midweek ACL clash and our next A-League match against Adelaide.

The Wanderers next match is against Guizhou Renhe in the Asian Champions League group stage, in China on the 12th of March 2014.

Its ok when punh ups (violence wise are much much worse) happen in NRL. When it happens there its just a bit of good old fashioned biff.

Channel 9 would be spewing about that. Expect more negative stories. I honestly thought the Roosters/Rabbits game would pull 50k+.

And dont forget NRL have much more media coverage and resources then us.

As someone mentioned the 3-1 scoreline has haunted us this season.

We are leaking a lot of goals, where last season our defence was key.

    The question is why.

really ch nine?  these are the people who profit from violence by making tele series such as underbelly in which they re inact the murders of others even while there families are out there in the communities often dramatizing and popularizing it, for ratings if gilbert does not like violence in all seriousness he should grow a spine and quit rugby league commentary and ch nine altogether. i took neutrals they loved it and will definately go again.

I'm sitting here at work still scratching my head about what happened last night. The last few weeks we have made so many silly defensive errors which have cost us dearly. I don't know the answer but something needs to change or we will be bundled out of our season very prematurely. I just would like top say that all WSW fans last night made me ever so proud to be part of this beautiful family. I'm just going to put this result down to keeping the rivalry healthy. We can only improve from here, I hope this happens before it's too late.

We started so well yesterday, we put pressure on in the right areas when we didn't have the ball and kept it tight and held a good line, ESFC never looked like scoring. We score and then the penna miss and we lost our shape a bit. I know it was stupid errors that cost us but we also lost a bit if discipline and pressure on ESFC when they had the ball.

WSW of last year would have closed that out for a 1-0 win or at worst a 0-0. Last year is was almost a team full of players with a point to prove to many about their careers and they answered them but perhaps that personal intensity is hard to maintain and can maybe only take you so far.

WSW will look very different on the pitch next season that's for sure.

Nope. I've missed three Sydney home matches in nine years. We've one a trophy in two years. I sing win, lose or draw.

Unlike the hundreds of NRMA Bandwagoners fans who started streaming out of the stadium with minutes left.

I hate that car park. It took nearly an hour to get out of it.

Very unfair comment. They all make mistakes and I'm struggling to remember any of Beauchamp's these last two seasons. We know NTS has had his fair share recently. The guy was a rock for us last season and this season, despite losing his place in the squad to Spiranovic, has continued to perform well when called upon and worn the captain's armband with dignity and authority. My main concern with Beauchamp is that he won't be with us next season!

For anyone feeling negative about the team's performance. watch a replay   . You'll probably realise that, apart from three very unfortunate errors, the team played well.

SFC team and supporters, if not delusional, will know they just got lucky, and didn't dominate the game in any way at all to actually deserve a win. That's the way it goes sometimes.

To all supporters behind the goal - superb effort- you couldn't have made us more proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!                                           ;)

Unfortunately making errors costs you games. You could play like Brazil for 89 minutes, but that 1 minute you don't play like Brazil can cost you a game.

I kinda wish Covic had got that goal from Garcia... #TysonIn

    The question is why.

You've heard of Meningococcal? Well I reckon we, along with a number of other A-league teams, have caught the dreaded Postecogloul disease. Symptoms are a gradual deterioration of a previously strong immune defense system due to an irrational urge to look classy and play out from the back, regardless of the sanity of this option in certain situations. This disease can be traced back to one Ange Postecoglou who had a couple of seasons of success with a certain A-League team and the subsequent heavy promotion of this risky behaviour by SBS and Fox Sports TV pundits, most of whom have either never coached a professional football team in their life, or if they have, are now all but washed up and earning their crust on TV because they can't get a coaching gig. The source of the disease is now spreading this malignant virus to the national team.

I decided for this derby game to go into Active support... :clapping:

, being a member ( yes I realise some of you will be saying "You certainly are a member buddy"... :shok: ) I was offered the golden ticket so took up the offer.

Had a ball and soon realised it is tough work supporting your team for the whole game in a physical manner !!

I lost my voice just singing two songs in the warm up, I'm struggling to talk today and my slightly out of shape frame realises time to hit the gym.

Well done to everyone around me but I'll now park my zimmer frame near the back of the eastern stand and watch the wanderers in a slightly less active manner.

    - Thought we were **** tonight, and not for the first time. Popovic's obstinacy is beginning to wear thin. D'Apuzzo assumed his regular role as liability. Bridge nowhere to be seen. Hersi in lala land. LaRocca's touch and distribution incredibly laboured. The less said about NTS/Beachump/Santalab, the better.

Question, had we converted the penalty and not made the two mistakes would you have still said that we were ****?

I admit that bridge/d'apuzzo selection almost reminds me of aloisi picking misfud time after time just because he signed him. Not that popa would have the same fate as aloisi or might lose his job over it but it is frustrating none the less. Apart from these two and the above (two mistakes and missed pen) didn't think we were that bad or were too far away from where we want to be (they had four shots and scored three), resorted to long ball over the top because they couldn't play through us and we had some very good attacks/shots of goal.

    Yes.

How cute, SFC fan talknt about walking out, obviously he either is blind or really has missed more games than he says he has!

This 1000% after the last 2 Moore Park derbies not only did the wider crowd leave (which is expected) but the Cove vanished as well. We stood and chanted right till the players came over.
