  • Wanderers Storm Clear

    mack

The highest ever crowd for a non-Derby A-League regular season fixture at Parramatta Stadium saw the Wanderers storm home in the second half to take a 2-0 win, and go four points clear at the top of the A-League ladder.

After the FFA finally saw sense and agreed to review their banning process, a near full house was expected with the RBB back in full voice. 17,073 fans turned out including a sizeable Melbourne away contingent, and all were treated to a wondeful game of football.

It didn't take long for the Wanderers to pierce the Melbourne defence. 6 minutes into the match, the high press of the Victory allowed Mitch Nichols to put Mark Bridge through on goal. With just the keeper to beat, his touch let him down at the critical moment, he went wide, and slipped, his shot dribbling wide.

Victory had their best chance of the first half on 18 minutes. Andrew Redmayne spilled a routine pickup from a Victory corner, Georgevski hooked the rebound over his shoulder into the path of Besart Berisha, the Albanian striker launched himself at the ball but at knee height he could do little to direct it on target, the ball bounced off his knee, crashed into the crossbar then was cleared away.

The second half opened with a goal for the Wanderers. Scott Neville placed a perfect ball in behind the Victory left fullback for Romeo Castelen to run onto, the winger placing a first time pass into the path of an unmarked Mark Bridge who had a tap-in from 6 yards to break the 0-0 deadlock. He nearly had a second moments later, a lob from inside the box at a corner hitting the top of the crossbar.

Romeo Castelen was the clear best on the park and in the 78th minute he finally had a reward for weeks of effort, albeit with a little help from Victory custodian Danny Vukovic, who spilled a fierce drive into the back of the net.

It was the 7th win in a row for the Wanderers, who are 4 points ahead of Brisbane Roar even after the Roar came from behind against Wellington, as well as puttin the Victory back on their heels despite their game in hand.

Dimas, Alberto, Castelen were all outstanding. Credit to Redders for that save too.

Wanderland was properly rocking tonight. Really proud of everyone there, one of those nights where the concept of a 'non-active fan' is a complete myth.

Where can I watch a replay of the game? Forgot to record the game on fox :nono:

Do you have on demand? Should be able to download it & watch at your own pleasure! (On Foxtel)

Castelan shouldve had pen in 47th min. Just watching replay.

100%, especially if he blew his whistle for all the soft calls that he gave in the first half. Don't even get me started on that referees performance tonight, horrible! He isn't one of the full time ones though? Hopefully not!

From what I've been reading, that referee tonight is actually from Melbourne.

I don't get why the FFA allows them to ref a game where there is a conflict of interest.

Peter Green from Brisbane reffed our grand final with the roar...

Will probably go into more detail later but that was probably the most perfect night at Wanderland since the 6-1 demolition of Adelaide. The boys on the pitch played beautiful creative football for the most part, at a standard that our legendary Season One squad never really reached. In the stands the entire WSW faithful were in fine voice...I'm normally not a diss chant fan but it was fûcking brilliant tonight. Much respect to the RBB. Throw in having a unglaublich session with the brothers & sisters at the Bav, and dare I say a truly worthy opponent on & off the pitch, well...

Remember these days we live in people...they will never come again (or until or next home win after a piss-up at the BBC)

Just finished watching the replay, Simon Hill is a legend, so many backhanded comments to those who sought to undermine us...although I had to laugh when he said something like "this is football" during the first special victory chant

The replay did show just how special Andreu's attempt in the second half was, and Redders had a great game...he has really turned around the apprehension of his signing for sure

I know the style we now play is to draw back the opposition, to get the tika taka moving forward but F U C K me. Got to put to bed the short goal kicks, they do my head in. Will need a heart defibrillator under every seat if they keep it up.  :smurfnono:

Agree with everything said, so I won't repeat. One of the highlights that hasn't been mentioned was the reaction from RoMayo's family when he scored. His son was beside me and his wife & daughter were behind me. Just an explosion of pride and relief. It was a pleasure to share the moment with them. He's got a great family behind him.

Also saw Taurus chatting with Lucy Zelic. Is there anyone you don't know?

Do you guys reckon a WSW/MV Grand Final would be played at ANZ Stadium?

We could go close to selling it out. Victory would bring 5-10k fans easy.

It does raise an interesting question.  I'm assuming FFA have learned from their mistakes and made sure venues are secured in both Sydney and Melbourne to host a grand final.  So, which venue is it?  I'm going to guess the SFS is the one for a Sydney team.

I remember when Castelen was on trial at Boro just a few years back, he very nearly joined us, he was called back after his initial trial and then scored a goal for us in a friendly. I think it was one of those situations where a deal is negotiated and it just fell through for whatever reason, it was close though. A fully fit and flying Castelen would still easily cut it at a high level in Europe, please let him stay fit because I so want to see more of that!!!

Anyway here is Castelen in his short Boro playing days  :D

Seriously amazing football. If you told me we would play this well last year I would have slapped you one. I can hardly believe it. Very happy at the moment. Not only are we winning but we are winning the right way with aggressive, positive, attacking, TEAM football. We are defending as a unit, look as if we can score with every attack, its very balanced and when we do lose the ball we work so hard to win it back quickly. Its just brilliant.

Before the season started I was thinking maybe a 5th or 6th place finish, just sneak in to a finals place. Long way to go yet and we should keep our feet firmly on the ground, but **** me we are playing some good stuff right now! Hard to not get excited.

You have to admit Boro, he looks so much better in this kit though...  :xnod:

I don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves but with a 4 point buffer and ESFC & Victards with ACL duty, I think QANTAS better put on a few extra flights to Wellington in the last round...  ;)
