  • Western Sydney Wanderers Are Champions Of Asia

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been crowned the Champions of Asia after a stoic 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, the Wanderers winning the two legged tie 1-0 on aggregate following Tomi Juric's goal in Sydney in the first leg.

The 64th minute strike in the first leg at Parramatta Stadium proved to be the only goal of the tie, with the "Blue Wave" crashing forlornly against a Red & Black fortification manned by a team who refused to concede a goal to their better resourced opponents.

In the 18th minute Al Hilal had the first chance of the game, swinging a free kick from the left flank that the Wanderers weren't able to get anything on, thankfully for them neither did one of their opponents, a right boot stuck out but agonisingly distant from making contact.

A minute before half-time the first penalty shout of the night was waved away by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Inside the area a ball rolled into the path of the flying Nawaf Shaker, Antony Golec clipped the right foot of the attacker but the theatrical leap perhaps weighed the incidence in the favour of the Australians.

After the break it was another stonewall penalty turned down, Salman Alfaraj latching onto a through ball deep in the right corner of the penalty area and was clearly brought down by Ante Covic but wasn't punished for the indiscretion. Another potential penalty came when the ball was kicked at short range into arms of Brendon Santalab, Nishimura judging that it was ball to hand rather than hand to ball.

The Saudi's pushed on and on, pressing for a goal that would take the game into extra time, and it looked for all money like they had one in the 84th minute. A cutback found talismanic striker Yasser Al-Qahtani, his shot from near the penalty spot had no right to be saved but the big hand of Covic found a way. The ball bounced once before spinning out for a corner just inches away from the goalpost. The save was the biggest moment for an Australian keeper since Mark Schwarzer in the famous shootout against Uruguay.

The Wanderers had precious little attack of their own, the best chance coming from a mazy Vitor Saba dribble that released Labinot Haliti, the shot being blocked desperately. Western Sydney didn't need a goal however, an eventual 6 minutes of injury time passed before the final whistle blew and the Wanderers were officially crowned Champions of Asia.

The immediate post-game scene was marked by disgraceful conduct from the Al Hilal players, with Matthew Spiranovic being spat on and headbutted, a melee threatened to breakout but cooler heads prevailed.

The extraordinary end to the Wanderers maiden assault on the continental stage ended in a victory that few if any would have predicted in the first year or even second year of the club's existence. The championship is an eternal credit to the tactical nous of Tony Popovic, and the resilience of every man to have pulled on the famous Red & Black hoops of Western Sydney.

The Club World Cup now looms in December, the Wanderers joining San Lorenzo (CONMEBOL), Real Madrid (UEFA), ES Setif (CAF), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Auckland City (OFC) & hosts Moghreb Tetouan in Morocco from the 10th of December. The Wanderers will face Cruz Azul of Mexico for the right to face European giants Real Madrid in the semi-final. Such a class would be the biggest competitive fixture for an Australian side since South Melbourne took on Manchester United in the 2000 edition of the competition.

Tony Popovic spoke after the match about the win, "We were called a small club yesterday. Today we are the biggest in Asia."

The next match for the Champions of Asia is against the Wellington Phoenix, on Friday the 7th of November.

To any Al Nasser fans reading here, you were right in your hatred towards Al Hilal. At first I thought it was just rivalry. Then I started hearing that Romanian coach of theirs being the most arrogant piece of shyte but I still didn't take it to heart. Just put it to the passion and pride that comes along with football.

But to have that maggot headbutt, spit and try to start a punch up (in which he would've been flattened by the way if Juric had a go at him) just shows how right your fans are at hating their team. To witness the lasers being shot into the faces of our beloved players...lowlifes. Using such tactics just goes to show the confidence they have in their team.

Now at least they've been put in their place by our 'small team' making them therefore even more insignificant. They've also exposed themselves to be to be the low down dirty dogs that they are, to the world.

All I can say to them is:

Enjoy the great work you've done to bring credit and respect to your team you jokers. You have now become the laughing stock of the football world. All the money and royalty you idiots arrogantly blabber on about counted for nothing. You can learn a thing or two from us. Perhaps then you will have more loyal fans that don't clear out a 65000+ strong stadium faster than the blink of an eye. Do your fans a favour and learn some respect for the game, morons.

I'm not even gonna mention the 24hr ban I got from this site for predicitng the above.....Sorry Balks, had to bring it up...LOL   :good:

The Wanderers ACL campaign has been a massive achievement, considering player commitment, tactics and overcoming poor sportsmanship of opposing teams and their supporters.

Congratulations and celebrate the title of Asian Champions.

Good luck for the Club World Cup in Morocco.

Thanks Ric! a sydney fan who is a true football supporter by the look of your comments. Was a rollacoaster ride against many high quality sides.

I see that the WSW Wikipedia page is being bombarded throughout the day, but ironically mostly by knuckle-dragging Smurf supporters. At least someone is doing a good job of cleaning out the detritus of their dribbling almost as quick as it's posted.

Funny to see that the spelling of some of their rubbish is correct - they must be paying someone.

I'm not going to say much about this morning.

I was at the live site and met some wonderful people beforehand at the Woolie.

It was a night dreams are made of, and a night I will NEVER forget.

What I would like to say though is this.......

We have talked about the spitting, headbutt, lasers etc....... as being dog acts.

The act I saw as being most disrespectful, and the thing that summed up what a dog club with a dog culture Al Hilal are was watching them all immediately remove their Runner's Up medals from around their necks upon being presented them.

If WSW had have been runner's up, they still would have returned to this country as brave heroes and treasured their medals.

I have rarely seen such obnoxious, unsportsmanlike behaviour in all my years of following sports of ALL codes.

Agree with you mate. That was disrespectful to the game, to the competition, to the organisation, to us, to their fans and most importantly whether they realise it or not, to themselves.

I was at the live site this morning but I had to leave early to get to the start line for Sydney to Wollongong charity bike ride. I left just as the 20-30 flares/smokies were ripped and so missed covics' beast of a save and the aftermath of winning the ACL and celebrating with everyone.

Anyway, After the event I put my wanderers jersey on and had a dozen or so people comment / congratulate wsw while I was lying on the grass savouring the achievement. On the way home when I got to Central station I saw some Sydney FC and CCM supporters coming down the stairs at platform 19. I was whistling 'streets of western Sydney' and when I walked close to them had the biggest grin on my face. I looked at all of them with my big smile and they wouldn't meet my eye and turned away..

    best moment so far!
