  • Phoenix Punished In Penrith

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers epic A-League drought was quenched on a stifling hot day as the Wanderers played and won their first ever competitive A-League match in Penrith.

On a day of firsts Nikita Rukaytsya scored his first ever goal for the club with a neat turn and powerful strike in the 18th minute, before Brendon Santalab sealed the game in stoppage time following neat work from Nick Kalmar.

The Wanderers bought double Asian Champions Matthew Spiranovic & Tomi Juric back into the first team squad, Juric playing his normal role up front and Spiranovic stepping into the holding midfield role.

Barely a quarter hour into the game and having dominated the early stages, the Wanderers turned their advantage on the pitch into a lead on the scoreboard. Labinot Haliti lobbed in a cross that Mateo Poljak smartly knocked down for Rukaytsya, his first touch put the ball in a perfect position, and on the turn the flying winger blasted a firebolt that was through Wellington keeper Glenn Moss before he get his hands up. Just minutes later it was Rukaytsya again in the action, Wellington failing to clear their lines, it fell inviting but he put a weak shot into the arms of Moss.

Wellington had few chances of their own, their best coming on the half-hour, a counter attack launched by Roy Krishna, Michael McGlinchey launching Nathan Burns on a mission to the edge of the Wanderers penalty area before receiving a backheel return ball. The tricky midfielder then ran past Brendan Hamill and beat Hamill's central defensive counterpart Topor-Stanley. Red & Black reinforcements arrived in the nick of time and between Poljak & Ante Covic they kept their clean sheet alive.

Sandwiched between that McGlinchey effort were long range strikes for Antony Golec, who had a superb game with Wellington's tactical setup giving him the freedom of the pitch, and Mark Bridge, who had the crowd gasping with his curling drive. Matthew Spiranovic joined in on the fun with his long drive that had Moss scrambling. Just before half-time Rukaytsya went off with an ankle injury.

Wellington came out in the second half looking to pressure the Wanderers, but their long balls produced little in the way of clean chances, their best hope being a denied penalty when Nathan Burns went to ground somewhat theatrically with 5 minutes of regulation time remaining.

As might be expected, with Wellington pressing for an equaliser, they opened themselves up at the back. In the first minute of stoppage time the Wanderers received a throw in, Kalmar driving down the line before he turned Andrew Durante inside out, he squared the ball along the edge of the 6 yard box, Santalab gratefully knocking it past Moss to seal the game.

With the pressure valve of their long streak without winning over, focus will turn to how well can Tony Popovic build up his current charges for an unlikely tilt at the top 6, and certainly for the upcoming defence of the Asian Champions League.

The Wanderers next game is against Newcastle Jets, in Newcastle, on Saturday the 14th of February, kick-off at 5:00PM.

I am yet to watch the replay, and possibly blinded by happiness from the win, but I didn't think we played that poorly. We actually played the ball on the ground instead of ridiculous long balls. It wasn't a clinical performance but we did not look hopeless like we have in other games this season.

I thought Spira and Poljak were both stand out performers. Also special commendations to Golec.

All in all, I'm v happy and can't wait for Saturday !

I can, I need recovery and strengthening lol

I haven't felt like this since the ACL win.

I'm currently at work in the office, my arms are feeling heavy (possible strained arm from celebrating Ruka's goal), voice is 50/50 (I'm sorry if I yelled at you to chant loud, it was the alco and the heat) and my head is thumping.

That's the feeling of a good Sunday out.

did you hear the importance of la banda yesterday?? as the second half started you boys were just getting the last few drops of h20 in and getting gloves back on etc as the chants started so for the first minute there was all of about 5 people chanting then you kicked in everyone here's the beat and the whole bay started. how special do you feel hahahahaha

Spira was immense in midfield. Hammil is too good to be played out of position on the right, so he should continue to partner Topor in central defence. This was proved in our ACL run, so there is no worry there.

But Spira, just had so much time in the middle & that has been missing. It seemed to allow Poljak to have a more mobile role, while Spira just policed the middle of the pitch.

In regards to the match in full, i felt we started quite poorly, but from the goal onwards we dominated the half & were probably unlucky not to lead by more than 1-0 at the break. In the second half we were obviously under more pressure, but the way we dug deep & fought for the win was impressive.

    Onwards & upwards!!

Loved to have seen how much impact Yojiro might've had given the space Spira and Golec were creating

Absolutely disgusted in the treatment we have received both times we have visited Penrith. Its a council owned ground but yet Panthers have the rule over it. The club and FFA had the option of showcasing our sport to newcomers but instead made us look like criminals. The amount of police officers there was insane to say the least! A ******* water cannon and the police command bus? What were they thinking?

    That Westies are crims?   :ninja:

Haven't even seen the goals yet.  Was at my local football club doing grading from dawn to dusk.  Of course they had to win when I couldn't go.

A WATER CANON.....so you telling me we were paying $5.50 for water all day and sweating our balls off when all we had to do was start a litle riot and we could have had all the free water we wanted...

Thousands of people lined up patiently waiting for their mandatory cavity search and a go on on the broken turnstiles in 35 degree heat.... water cannon parked nearby....seems like an opportunity missed!

Can we make it a thing to start calling Arnie, Ernie?

And his signature song can be: Ali ba ba, you're the one, you make coaching lots of fun.

But alas, Arnie is no fun. Ernie is the party starter! He's more of a Bert lol

I actually spoke (briefly) with Ernie after the match.  I found him a real gentleman.  He had plenty of time for the Wanderers fans - he had a bit of friendly banter with one of the kids, and then when speaking with me and my daughter he assured her that the Wanderers season was about to get a whole lot better now that they had their first win, and to keep on supporting them.  Nice bloke.

Poor Ernie - having a sook about how many players we had behind the ball ffs. Is he attending the Arnold School of Footballing Genius?

    http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/article/2015/02/08/wanderers-finally-crack-it-league-win

I hardly think he's having a sook. He just admitted that our defense was tough to crack, which was true. We pretty much played to our usual style. Score a goal and then defend for your life. It just happened to pay off this time. Still think there is some work to do for us, particularly on the possession side and taking control of the game. But Wellington are a good side, so it was a good win.

Arnie would have been taking cheap shots and making snide comments if it was him who copped it. Wait till the derby and you will see if we are able to sneak a win.

Delusional Nix fans are of the belief the better team lost and we parked the bus..

yeah that's why Santa scored in the 91st - to show you the better team won, good luck on that inevitable slide down the ladder and ending up 7th in your second last season in the A League.

Correct me if im wrong but finals are virtually out of reach.

Going off last years table we need to win at least 11 of our last 13 or 14 games.

With every win we get to hope a little longer, but Top six is highly unlikely at best, and realistically "mission impossible". Every game is a big game, but especially the two home matches gainst City are must win.

Heart let Aloisi go after Round 12 with 4 points. They ended up with 26 points and the wooden spoon. We had 4 points after Round 13. Considering our schedule I'd be suprised if we achieve 30 points.

A Sydney FC fan sticker bombed my mum's car

Apart from the fact that it was easily peeled off, lol, it seems a bit insecure.

A day after they beat the competition leaders away with two men sent off, late in the night Sydney time, their fans prioritise having a go at us.

Would you want to watch a replay of your team winning?

And a top coach. Apart from Milicic he is the only other past and current manager with HAL experience I'd welcome at the WSW. He's done a great job in Wellington.

Edit: just watched the press conference. Not a sook at all, but very gracious in defeat. He made reference to the Phoenix' lack of depth, and that 18 months ago many of his players were still playing in the youth team. He believes that the Victory has the best squad in the competition, followed by ESFC, if I understood him correctly.

    You know what?

The main two issues that are being complained about, could easily have been avoided.

ISSUE ONE:  Queues getting into the stadium.

SOLUTION:  Try getting to the stadium more than half an hour out from kick off.

    ISSUE TWO: Expensive water.

SOLUTION: Going up to the bar, and using the icy cold water they had available for free.

I wanted to avoid said issues, so did what I could to avoid them = happy Megan.

Im not going to repeat all the stuff other people said, but I have to add one thing - behind me there were two kids who sang their hearts out for the full 90. Kids like that give me hope. It was in the central Bay about 5 or 6 rows behind the core of the RBB. They were jumping and singing to the best of their ability... I just hope I can do that with my kids one day as well.

OTOH there was an older gentleman sitting right behind me as well who had a member scarf on and this really annoying thing in his hand (I don't know what it's called) but I'm sure people heard it. It made this horrible constant noise, sort of like a blender. Annoying as hell, he probably though he was being active that way.

Ooh is that like a wooden thing that rotates around a handle horizontally?

Ah you RBB kids don't know your active supporter history. A football rattle... a thing of great beauty! We used to have one in the house. Looked exactly like this...

It was massive or more likely I was very small. I could hardly get it going... made a tremendous racket. I think they were more popular in the 40s/50s....

..or, just perhaps the stadium staff could have opened up the gate that my ticket said to use. Why should I need to get to the ground more than 30 minutes before kick off because the stadium staff CBF'd opening up all the gates?

so I should sit there in the sun in the eastern stand and bake just because they don't open all the gates.  im sorry but get ****ed on that one.

Ah, you've got to love the Gen Y (or whatever generation it is these days). Total ignorant of the history of football. Soon they will be saying to keep the effniks out of football. I remember Parramatta Melita supporters used to use those in the old NSL/state league days. I didn't like it at first, but then got used to it and realised it was a great thing as it revved up the crowd and the team. Has to be used sporadically though.

Seems these days it is only popular to listen to a couple of thousand boozed up kids singing out of tune ;) Ah well, I miss all those old instruments that would add something different and unique to the atmosphere back in the day. I am sure we will get to the point where it just bland singing we have to listen to (if we aren't there already).

That place was a shambles and that was clear to anyone who wasn't there early like yourself. I was there about 40 mins before kick off and queues were already way out of hand. Here's a solution - employ a suitable number of stadium staff, and open all the freaking gates! The fact that they tossed every gate open about 10 mins before kick off and didn't even check tickets kinda supports my position.
