  • Gutless Wanderers Capitulate In Perth

    mack

A pathetic performance for the Red & Black against Perth has seen the Glory rise to 3rd on the ladder while the Wanderers head to China losing two games in a row.

It was a heartless, insipid and staid example of the football that has kept the Wanderers closer to last place than 1st, with the Derby win fading into history. If you've watched pretty much any Wanderers game you've seen this one. Passing backwards & sideways is more important than moving towards goal, a defence who spend more time scrambling than putting up controlled resistance, an impotent forward line, substitutes who do nothing to change the game, and a coach whose unchanging tactics are being increasingly exposed by opposition coaches.

After 10 minutes the Wanderers were handed their first warning, Castro bamboozled several defenders before laying it back to Taggart, who had his shot from 3 yards out blocked on the line by Jonathan Aspro.

Terry Antonis was the only player to come remotely close to scoring, as he cannoned an extremely long range free kick effort off the cross bar. The Wanderers managed a pathetic solitary shot on target, it coming in the 75th minute from Brendon Santalab, it dribbled straight into the path of Liam Reddy who could have made a cup of tea in the time it took to leave the boot of Santalab and it's arrival at his feet.

Chris Harold opened the scoring for Perth. Diego Castro found Harold directly from a free kick, Harold swung out a boot. His connection wasn't particularly strong, the ball rolled along the floor, luckily for the Glory Robbie Cornthwaite threw his toe out, deflecting the grubbing shot past Vedran Janjetovic.

In the dying minutes of the game, deep into injury time, Perth took advantage of more defensive frailty. Despite the game still being up for grabs and a potential Premiership point to be taken with one goal, the Wanderers sat back and let Castro & Keogh play it back and forth near the corner flag for 3 minutes, until Castro decided he'd had enough of toying with the inept defence.

Dimas who came on as a sub somehow managed to look tired, he made no effort to tackle Castro, the cover defender Shannon Cole was nutmegged by the cut-back, and Cornthwaite was woefully out of position. Joel Chianese stole in front of Cornthwaite and beat Janjetovic to seal the points.

Tony Popovic is delusional if he still thinks he can win the Grand Final. The way his side & tactics are going, he'll be lucky to win another game. Dimas needs to be stripped of the captaincy immediately, he is not worthy of the shirt he is embarrassing in every game.

The failure on the pitch tonight was compounded with the complete silence regarding the Kearyn Baccus suspension issue. Leading up to the game, the club announced that Kearyn had been suspended for receiving 5 yellow cards. After being made aware of the fact that Kearyn had only received 4 cards, while his brother Keanu received 1, the club was silent despite repeated requests to explain the situation, and how they allowed the FFA to get away with suspending one of their players incorrectly.

The side head straight to China to face Shanghai in the Asian Champions League midweek. The way the team are playing, they will be annihilated by the Chinese superclub.

    Hahahhaha..

I think what hurts the most is some players don't put in 100% in my view.

    Few things

    - Dull game

    - Perth scored off a lucky deflection from us.

    - Just like against Urawa and CCM, we didnt do enough shooting

    - Dimas is becoming more and more useless every week

    - Jumpei at worst is a Sunday park footballer, not even NPL quality

    - Missed Nico

    - Antonis was our only player that put in any effort in

    - We are too predictable

Well the squad rotation worked well lost both games didn't score a goal

We dont have the quality and depth to rotate this season. Popa will say we are still going for the ACL and the HAL finals, reality is we could well progress in neither.

If we get smashed again next ACL game that is all over anyway i think.

Agreed. Unfortunately we need to pick on or the other, this side isn't a patch on the S2 one that balanced both. If we lose on Tuesday, we need to forget the ACL. We can still make the six, and tinker our style towards winning one off plsyoffs (as Btron mentions above). The ACL is a much tougher beast, and this side simply isn't good enough for it.

TLDR: If we keep trying to juggle both comps, we will keep losing in both.

The 13/14 squad started strongly but faded significantly once ACL started, ACL success made it worth it though. Only 2 wins from the last 7 rounds, including the final round where 3 points separated 2nd and 6th. The two goal comeback against last placed Heart in the final 5 minutes makes everyone remember popa as balancing the two comps, but it was perilously close to a HAL collapse and a 4th/5th place finish. The week off, and ACL group stages finishing, allowed the quality of the squad to show through and make the grand final, which again is what people remember, but the busy period took a heavy toll on results. 3 losses in the 7 game ACL period, 4 in the 20 before that.

Agree that popa needs to pick which comp to focus on, neither of this week's squads ever looked like winning, and you're wasting Nico making him work for 90 minutes when there's no chance of a result. Should have pulled him instead of Lustica or Jumpei at 3-0 so he could back up when needed.

Hmmm, this rotation policy is fairly useless if we are losing every game. And still can't work out combinations ............. longest pre - season ever LOL

Anyway, off to China for the ACL game!!!!

Enjoy the trip! Hope they put in a shift for you. I would focus on finding some **** hot food and drink and do some sightseeing because these useless chunts on the pitch could throw you a right old turd. Edited by WSWBoro

Its not only Popa's fault. As a club we are not prepared to splash the cash. City, smurfs and brisbane have never made a profit yet they are still around and near the top. Our owners value sustainability. Fair enough it's their call, however that means we will always struggle to suceed. We have never dominated have we? Our success is down to Popa. He has one hand tied behind his back. We should be a powerhouse but we always have to punch above our weight.

We don't have the squad to fight on two fronts.

I see you've been reading this blokes tweets

@WSukkarieh When you cut spending on players by approx 25% from previous season, you're fighting with one hand tied behind your back 1f620.png

    Spot on..

Also winds me up when people, pass this season off as being a result of the Salary Cap. It isn't, we aren't spending anywhere near what the rules allow, if we were properly spending the cap and using the marquee spots, then you can maybe people can say it's a cap issue.

We are spending a little more than a central coast budget and getting little better than central coast results.

More frustratingly with the move to SoP, this wasn't really the season to have a shocker. The support we are losing will be harder to bring back than it was to lose.

I've lost hope that we'll get anywhere near winning anything this season.

We might make the top 6 but we'll lose to whoever we play against. City/glory/victory/roar it doesn't matter. They have all outclassed us significantly this season.

Plus it looks like the players have zero desire to win.

Looking forward to next season now lol

Maybe it's the ghost of Pio that haunts the bean counters. 375k per goal. Or Saba's 400k beach holiday.

Thing is all new signings are a gamble all over the world. Other 'big' clubs like the smurfs have made poor signings but they always splash the cash still. They have never broken even. Not once.

Agree that the motivation and passion to win seem inconsistent and in some players, lacking this season

So the question is why? What are the coaching team doing to address this inconsistency? That mongrel desire to win has waned and in some games its lack is embarrassing - like last night. What conversations are we having of mental fitness, mental resilience, when you're down and under pressure from the opposition? Of course skill and quality are going to play a part - when those elements are in question, it makes success all the more harder, but I would argue season three squad post ACL win was as bad as this re skill/quality if not worse than this season. And, yes I questioned commitment and resilience of  our season 3 players/team, but this team/season feels worse some how.

We have some good individuals but as a team its not working. Some of that is on the players, some must be on our coaching staff, including our on the field strategy, our inability to adapt tactics/formation/positioning.

There were moments when our inability to hold the ball and make a decent pass last night were pretty alarming for an aleague side.

IDK, feeling flat and disheartened. Its the schizophrenic nature of our results that makes it hard to know what to think really.

Forget the ACL. Getting our pants pulled down and our a*ses kicked by the Asian clubs might just wake the club admin up to do a better recruitment job in the future.

Play our best squad for tha HAL. Try and get something out of this season, even if it's for the moral of the fans.

Give the young guns a run in the ACL. A chance to show what they have got. If we get smashed so what. We're getting smashed as it is because of the squad roation between HAL & ACL.

Last night showed how much we missed Nico, Baccus,Clisby.

My dad and little sister were at last night's game

They bumped into a person who works at the Novotel hotel where the WSW players stayed

He said that the WSW players were the nicest professional team to stay there (friendly and polite)

What we need is a fiscally irresponsible owner with shed loads of money instead of a fiscally responsible one.

Someone who is happy to lose money on his love and hobby. Same as any of us don't expect to break even on our hobbies and interests.

Not sure they need to be financially irresponsible (league one and two is littered with clubs who went down that path)

It's about ambition, Western Sydney Have the potential to be clearly the biggest club in a league. If we were sydney are on the table, what do we think the crowd at ANZ have been the other week? If we are played decent football this year how big would our spotless crowds be? How big will we be on the return to parra.

At the moment we are in danger of pissing it away. Derby 1 63k derby 3 43k

Smurfs don't have that potential, top of the table playing well and their crowds still only bothers to come out and see us when they are at home

The size of the old parra was capping our crowds that's gone now, and what do we do

Release a terrible shirt in the wrong colour

Let our squad go and replace with crap

    Don't spend the salary cap

Don't sign a forward (well apart from the wishful thinking of Bulut)

Piss off our own fans by not getting fan packs out

    Season has been a Omni-shambles

Nobody (well few) are calling for people to spend silly money an ADP or drogba, but just to show some ambition

Retain likes of Alberto and Andreu, go after a mcdonald or an Antonis type player at start of the season not a half hearted effort in Jan

Like it or not we are (or should be) the biggest club in the biggest city. My expectation is higher than if we were CCM or Jets and it should be

    End of rant

I keep hearing that we didn't spend enough on players (and we didn't) but we have players good enough to complete for the top 3 positions. Of course if we had a couple of stars we would be better, but that's not the issue. The main problem is not the players we have, the issue is the system we play. We keep the possession and don't do anything with it (unless it's a mistake and gift the opposition a goal). I disagree that we missed Nico and Bacchus yesterday ....We played exactly the same as we play when they are in. We are so predictable that it's becoming boring.

Missed the game due to a gig...so did Baccus really miss the game because he was 'suspended'?? Absolute farce from the club to not notice the error there if true.

Do we have players to compete for top 3 if (and that's a big if) we do it's only since we added vedran and Antonis.

Sydney, both melbourne's, roar and probably Perth all had better squads than us at the start of season.

But I agree our style of player is a big issue, we just seem to run of ideas then just pass the ball backwards. That said last year we had the players to play that style and we did ok.

I missed majority of game last night, out with her indoors, caught the last 20 or so, felt like I was watching the last 20 of the game against mariners

I'd add that the amazing win and unfortunately the banner crap has covered up the important question for club to answer

Are you happy with a 20k fall in derby crowds? Do you think there is a slight chance that this maybe related to having a poor squad?

There was always going to be a drop on the first derby. Many randoms went for the novelty factor - first ANZ, rd 1, biggest Australian domestic crowd etc. Last week had none of that. Even if we were on ESFC's position, it wouldn't have gone beyond about 50.

Apart from the keeper we didn't add any value from the beginning of the season. Agreed, the defense got better but it wasn't with new players (apart from Vedran) it was with selecting the better players.

Antonis is good but even if we added another 2 Nicos we still won't score if we don't shoot. If you take Santa out we haven't got a single player that has scored more than 3.

Yes I want to know what the deal is with Baccus and his odd omission?

It's entirely possible they were planning on resting him anyway, so they decided just to cop it rather than risk him getting suspended for a game where they were planning to play him.

I still wonder how we can 'win the grand final', when we could end up in the finals without beating a single team above us on the ladder.

Didn't we beat the team coming first last week?

    no nico no win
