  • Mierzejewski Brace KO's Wanderers

    mack

An early gift to the Wanderers from Andrew Redmayne was cancelled out as Sydney FC ran out 3-1 winners in the last derby of the regular season.

With both teams suffering from suspensions and Sydney FC having flown home from China it looked to be the Wanderers best hope of taking all three points against their city rivals in a game marked by teeming rain.

10 minutes in and the away side capitalised on some poor defence and awful goalkeeping to open the scoring through Oriol Riera. Marcelo Carrusca found fullback Raul LLorente with a lofted ball over the top, his cross bobbled into the path of Andrew Redmayne and the ex-Wanderers keeper spilled it to the advantage of Riera who couldn't miss from 6 yards out. That was the highlight of the evening for the Wanderers as they were unable to put together any major attacks, the closest being Ikonomidis flashing a header wide in the 25th minute.

As it looked like the Wanderers might have something to protect in the second half, Michael Thwaite was judged to pull down Ninkovic outside the box as Matt Simon tried to play back a one-two pass. Adrian Mierzejewski stepped up and fired in a curling free kick from 24 yards out, over the wall, past Vedran Janjetovic. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced over the roof of the net for the equaliser.

Sydney FC had the lead in the 55th and Mierzejewski had a brace. Ninkovic hit a cross onto the penalty area that neither central defender headed away, and instead of clearing the ball, Carrusca chested it down inexplicably, Thwaite had been knocked down by Matt Simon, and with Roly Bonevacia & Carrusca pulling out of a challenge on Simon, the ball fell to the feet of Mierzejewski and he shot unerringly into the bottom corner. It was dreadful, inept defence, players falling over themselves and failures to clear the ball as good as throwing it into the net.

The match was practically over by that point and the third sealed it. Bonevacia capped off his season worst night by losing the ball with an aimless pass to Ninkovic, he ran into the box, released Bobo with a backheel and with the defence beaten the striker slipped the ball past Vedran.

The mild positives for the Wanderers that they showed some fight in the contest, that they had glimpses of quality in attack, but once again they were let down by flops like Roly & Alvaro Cejudo who came on in the second half to no effect whatsoever,  with one major contrast being Mierzejewski smashing home his free kick and Cejudo smashing a free kick into the Sydney FC wall. Mark Bridge was a passenger, Riera once again was forced to run back into the midfield to try and hold the ball, which of course left the Wanderers missing his quality on the end of moves and Hamill & Thwaite were comprehensively outplayed by Matt Simon, a striker who hasn't scored in two years.

With the majority of the team coming off contract at the end of this season there are few people on that list who look like they deserve another year as a professional footballer. It might even be for the best of the Wanderers drop out of the 6, as there will be no consolation finals series loss and Gombau can immediately get to work clearing out the deadwood from the Popovic era.

honestly i should feel upset and depressed over this but i am actually in quite a good mood, i had zero hype for the derby and it just doesnt effect me emotionally but previously i would be upset for like 4 days after the derby but on the actual match, redmayne pulled a redmayne and that is the only reason why we scored, we were outplayed and the better team won, cant really complain about anything in terms of ref decisions or anything

I agree. The team doesn't deserve to be in the top 6. They are only there because of woeful performances from the Nux, CCM and Roar.

ESFC / Smurf FC showed their class on and off the ball again tonight, even having played mid-week in China. WSW just doesn't have the team to cut it in this league at the moment.

    Tough times.

Watching us consistently pass back to the opposition, pick the wrong passage of play and fail to clear is painful.

    Season needs to end ASAP

    Spot on assessment Mack.

Some players are corroding away all the positive work being done. Although it probably doesnt seem like it we have improved, and its frustrating when things like  our composure on the ball when under pressure completely undermines any advantage we've gained.  We fought for the ball, won it and then panicked and kicked it straight to a sfc player. Cant do that without being severely punished by a team like esfc.

Yeah, there were amazing performances out there tonight. Thwaite, Roly, Bridgey.

Mack, Popovic left months ago, if we drop out of the 6 then he won’t (or shouldn’t) get a chance to rebuild. It’s his team has been since round 6.

    Im so wet right now

    #GombauOut

    #PopovicIn

I saw that Marc Warren has left Perth so he'd be a good transfer to bolster the backline.

Had a bit of hope for a result going into the game tonight. But team didn't really turn up. We should have run  over the top of them in second half..tired legs from ACL game...heavy pitch due to rain....instead we went to pieces couldn't keep possession .smurfs constant press seemed to cause panic and silly mistakes.

25k crowd think that's smallest for Derby at Allianz ? Weather certainly dampened atmosphere. Even though small turnout and shocking weather  RBB kept going...Hats off to everybody who turned up. Bit sad really thinking back to previous games at Allianz..away end absolutely heaving with bodies and noise. Other side bays  packed and singing. Weather big factor tonite for sure. But poor performances by team ,FFA, anti football media, over policing and move to souless Olympic park precinct  have  taken their  toll on fan base and the club, me wonders  if when we move back to Parra stadium mark 2 will it ever be like it was before ????

I sat in the pouring rain for that ****? <_<

Only redeeming part of the day was the incredible hire car and lunch we won through the Wanderers App raffle.

I honestly love this club but it’s getting really ******* hard to get up any enthusiasm to go to matches anymore. We have to go to **** venues, deal with overbearing and violent security and then to top it off, we have to put up with the **** that is dished up on the field.

I reckon a boycott is in order.

I am guessing that Popa scouted Cejudo.

But he bought Thwaitey so all's good!

Course he should get a chance to rebuild. It’s NOT his team. He’s brought two players in, and they are two of the three best players in the team when it comes to doing something in the front third.

He didn’t sign **** Thwaite who keeps giving away free kicks and is a poor marker for a player so experienced. He didn’t sign Roly as a visa player (lol), or broken down Cejudo and Herd. He’s not the one who put together a team that has Lustica as a regular. Lustica should be a sub when we have injuries, not a starter. The only thing you can blame on Gombau is Corny leaving with no replacement lined up, but if the captain ain’t happy with the direction you’re going and wants to leave then so be it.

I’m not saying this team couldn’t be doing better, but Popovic had a particular personality and he signed players that suited that personality and he generally got the best from them. This was always gonna be a difficult transition year unless you hire a popa clone.

Also, we’ve had just one coach in our existence. Let’s not turn into one of those whinging teams that dumps their coach at the drop of a hat.

Tbh mack, Llorente and Riera were great buys.

Cejudo's here for the holiday and Roly is a huge disappointment.

I can accept people lacking in skill...I mean Lustica for example is never going to play better than he does, he isn't capable of it. But what stinks is the stupidity of many of our players. We got our first goal through Redmayne ******* up a wet ball on the floor...then we never tested him like that again! On a soaking wet night we didn't have a single shot from distance along the floor...unbelievable.

Highlight of the night was my 30 min shower after getting home. And also btron's genius which meant I only paid 20 bucks for that shite.

Glad you had a good night, thought you would be dry in the posh seats though!

Nope! The seats we were given were three rows behind our bench. On a nice day, they would have been great tickets however today we couldn’t see half the pitch due to the rain canopy over the bench. Ended up moving one bay along so we could actually see the game. There were plenty of seats to choose from

We had ponchos and just decided to put up with the rain. But we ended up drenched and freezing. Lucky the hire car driver had a huge towel in boot for us to dry off with!

I'm not team #gombauout, but by the end of the season he will have had 21 out of 27 rounds and a mid season transfer window. He should be judged on what he does with the team. Popa is gone as is Foxe, if Gombau can't put a team in the top 6 of a league as **** as this one is then, I'd be suprised if he is trusted with the next season.

I think it will be academic anyway as. we will make the 6, and maybe the 4. I'm not advocating we drop coach as a hat, but I'm pretty tired of the blaming of previous manager.

I'm actually warming to the potato headed one.
