  • Wanderers The Seoul Survivors

A nail biting Asian Champions League group stage match has resulted in the Wanderers taking all three points with a 3-2 win in Korea tonight.

The Wanderers scored three unanswered goals and looked to have the measure of their Korean opponents, only for Yun Il-Lok to fashion a comeback with two stunning goals. The Wanderers held out against the relentlessness pressure to effectively kill Seoul's chances of progression from the group.

Opening the scoring was young gun Lachlan Scott, after Terry Antonis weaved his way through the Seoul midfield, he poked a ball in for Scott and his finish took a slight deflection off the keeper to nestled into the back of the net.

Antonis turned from provider to scorer on the back of a penalty won by Jack Clisby. Clisby swung in a cross that collected the arm of his marker, and the referee dubiously awarded a penalty for a deliberate offside. Antonis went straight down the middle with a penalty out of the Paneka playbook, the keeper went the wrong way and had no chance.

Jausha Sotirio put the Wanderers three in front when he was put clean in on goal by Mitch Nichols. The goalkeeper came out to meet the through ball but stopped when he realised he would get nowhere near it, Sotirio lobbed the keeper neatly to beat him to goal with the first bounce.

FC Seoul took an eternity to come into the game and their comeback was the work of one man. Yun Il-Lok absolutely destroyed Brendan Hamill inside the penalty area, twisting the fullback around before unleashing a left foot strike that beat Janjetovic with sheer power and perhaps a slight deflection from Hamill.

Il-Lok gave his team a huge chance of coming away with a point when he scored his second in the 72nd minute. If his first shot had a touch of luck his second was pure magic, he nutmegged Baccus, launching a missile that gave Janjetovic no chance at all.

With 20 minutes to go, the Wanderers drew back deeper & deeper in defense, but they held out with a determination not seen very often this season to pick up their first Asian Champions League win for the tournament.

Shanghai up 3-0 with 20 to go.

So Urawa stays on 6, we're on 3...

So if we beat fc Seoul on Matchday 4, and Urawa loses again, we'll be tied for 2nd!

And then what a HUUUUGE game Matchday 5 will be!

Not that we're getting ahead of ourselves...

Just heading home from the hospital after welcoming my second son into the world.

Thank you Wanderers for the perfect end to the perfect rollercoaster of a day.

    Beware the ides of March?

Not after a day like today!!!

    Congrats

We were fantastic for an hour, midfield especially. Hard to sustain that level of intensity throughout so no surprise they got back into it. The kid took both his goals really well for Seoul. Good game to watch, which is unusual for us.

Anyhow, the Urawa game could be a monster. Shame we can't dig up NTS, Spira and Covic so they can see what a red wall really f***ing looks like....

The thing that has most likely killed our chances is the weak capitulation in the second half against Urawa. We now have the slimmest of chances, requiring us to (a) win the remaining 3 games (would be a miracle) or (b) win next week with Urawa again losing, beat Urawa in Tokyo, and sweat on Seoul being able to hold Urawa to a draw in the final game.

But then, who knows - you could have had 25-1 last week for Leicester to win through in the Champions League.

    Football is a funny game.

We won't be 2nd if we're equal on points with Urawa. It goes on head to head and atm they have the advantage over us. If we beat them with less goals than they beat us they'll be in 2nd.

That first game might be our undoing in the long run

It's all good, Hamill and Borda will score with Jumpei getting a hat trick off the bench in Japan and we're set.

I'm pretty sure the pen (durbious or otherwise) was for handball rather than offside Mack.

With FCS all but out of contention to progress from the group, they could start fielding bare minimum teams for the remaining games, which could get ugly.

    Also, :woah:

It's possible that clubs sending B teams could help us out. Seoul are pretty much gone now so they may send a weak team to Campbelltown. If Shanghai beat Urawa again and then beat Seoul they'll have qualified and will probably send a weak team down for the last match day against us.

We'll need to beat Seoul at home and Urawa away. If we can do that then assuming Urawa beat a well and truly eliminated Seoul, we'll need at least a draw at home against Shanghai. If they leave their Brazilians at home and we play our strongest team I think we can take something from that game.

By far the biggest threat to us qualifying is having to beat Urawa away midweek after potentially playing in the first week of the finals.

The good thing now is that if we beat Seoul and Urawa loses again, our Japan leg is alive! We look like having a good contingent of travellers, so great for them.

Dammit, I missed an actual win. Saw the first half but succumbed to sleep in the second. In my defense I badly sprained my ankle yesterday - was exhausted by yesterday evening. Made a wrong move watching this in bed. Its too easy to close your eyes when Hamils on the screen, then BAM, lights out!

Hoping fox sports are showing it On Demand

So happy we won though. And it spawned this!

Haha it's amazing what one win does go back to he other acl threads and people are saying we are ****ed give up

Now one win and we are pulling out all the if's for next 3 games

For me let's just win at Campbelltown finish the season strongly

If we qualify it will be a nice surprise as unlikely as it still is

Majority of the time an Australian side plays a hard, physical game they'll come out on top in the ACL and that's what we did. For 70 mins we were straight into them with every challenge and as always, they didn't cope. That's the secret, if there is one in Asia because they're not used to a high press, they're happy for teams to sit back and share turns in possession because they are able to rely on their technical ability. It reminds me of playing football as kids and you always get that one kid who joins the team that has a league or union background. Their technical skills are shithouse but they'll run all day and go in like a bloody tank and most often they're one of the most effective on ground.

Our downfall was taking the foot off the gas and getting too casual in a physical sense at 3-0. Robbie Slater said at 3-0 something about the boys looking like they were having fun out there but they seemed to forget about who was in front of them and went into training ground mode. No Joga Bonito in Asia just yet haha

Classic Seoul though thinking they could come back, have another crack lads...

    Dino chest pump gif maybe.

Still don't think we can get through the group and if we do we'll get beat, result was great and should help our confidence in the a league.
