  • Western Sydney Wanderers Are Champions Of Asia

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been crowned the Champions of Asia after a stoic 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, the Wanderers winning the two legged tie 1-0 on aggregate following Tomi Juric's goal in Sydney in the first leg.

The 64th minute strike in the first leg at Parramatta Stadium proved to be the only goal of the tie, with the "Blue Wave" crashing forlornly against a Red & Black fortification manned by a team who refused to concede a goal to their better resourced opponents.

In the 18th minute Al Hilal had the first chance of the game, swinging a free kick from the left flank that the Wanderers weren't able to get anything on, thankfully for them neither did one of their opponents, a right boot stuck out but agonisingly distant from making contact.

A minute before half-time the first penalty shout of the night was waved away by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Inside the area a ball rolled into the path of the flying Nawaf Shaker, Antony Golec clipped the right foot of the attacker but the theatrical leap perhaps weighed the incidence in the favour of the Australians.

After the break it was another stonewall penalty turned down, Salman Alfaraj latching onto a through ball deep in the right corner of the penalty area and was clearly brought down by Ante Covic but wasn't punished for the indiscretion. Another potential penalty came when the ball was kicked at short range into arms of Brendon Santalab, Nishimura judging that it was ball to hand rather than hand to ball.

The Saudi's pushed on and on, pressing for a goal that would take the game into extra time, and it looked for all money like they had one in the 84th minute. A cutback found talismanic striker Yasser Al-Qahtani, his shot from near the penalty spot had no right to be saved but the big hand of Covic found a way. The ball bounced once before spinning out for a corner just inches away from the goalpost. The save was the biggest moment for an Australian keeper since Mark Schwarzer in the famous shootout against Uruguay.

The Wanderers had precious little attack of their own, the best chance coming from a mazy Vitor Saba dribble that released Labinot Haliti, the shot being blocked desperately. Western Sydney didn't need a goal however, an eventual 6 minutes of injury time passed before the final whistle blew and the Wanderers were officially crowned Champions of Asia.

The immediate post-game scene was marked by disgraceful conduct from the Al Hilal players, with Matthew Spiranovic being spat on and headbutted, a melee threatened to breakout but cooler heads prevailed.

The extraordinary end to the Wanderers maiden assault on the continental stage ended in a victory that few if any would have predicted in the first year or even second year of the club's existence. The championship is an eternal credit to the tactical nous of Tony Popovic, and the resilience of every man to have pulled on the famous Red & Black hoops of Western Sydney.

The Club World Cup now looms in December, the Wanderers joining San Lorenzo (CONMEBOL), Real Madrid (UEFA), ES Setif (CAF), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Auckland City (OFC) & hosts Moghreb Tetouan in Morocco from the 10th of December. The Wanderers will face Cruz Azul of Mexico for the right to face European giants Real Madrid in the semi-final. Such a class would be the biggest competitive fixture for an Australian side since South Melbourne took on Manchester United in the 2000 edition of the competition.

Tony Popovic spoke after the match about the win, "We were called a small club yesterday. Today we are the biggest in Asia."

The next match for the Champions of Asia is against the Wellington Phoenix, on Friday the 7th of November.

I hope he doesn't come, because I hope he gets a year on the sideline. Worse than Suarez' offence.

He probably won't get anything. Did Lippi get anything more than a "provisional" one match suspension after his pitch invasion or did the AFC just let it fade away?

Great scenes at the live site, congrats on everyone there and those involved in getting it up and running.

Lots of flares, unfortunately me and a small group of people got caught right in the middle of it, had a ring of flares right around us. Two girls were a bit distraught and had trouble breathing. I got burned by a flare and it still stings :(

Great to see some familiar faces there, and meet some new ones (hi Lookers and Westy).

The referee is a champion too haha 3 penalties turned away in the "best very hard to win against blue wave" stadium.

We had **** refs in the last three A-League away matches, and it cost us. Today it was different, and I feel thoroughly rewarded.

The ref was determined not to gift Al Hilal a penalty. God only knows what Covic was thinking when he tackled the Saudi player as he did. But that is neither here nor there now.

    Sore losers all round...

Riyadh: Coach Laurentiu Reghecampf felt Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal side “were the best team over the two games†despite losing the AFC Champions League final 1-0 on aggregate to Australia’s Western Sydney Wanderers following a goalless draw in Saturday’s second leg at the King Fahd International Stadium.

Two-time Asian champions Al Hilal dominated for long periods during both legs at Parramatta Stadium last weekend and the King Fahd International Stadium on Saturday, but failed to find a breakthrough over 180 minutes.

And with Tomi Juric’s first leg strike ultimately proving the difference between the two sides, Al Hilal missed out on joining Korea Republic’s Pohang Steelers as the only three-time Asian champions.

“We had bad luck and we had many chances. We were the best team over the two games,†said Romanian coach Reghecampf, who was appointed as Al Hilal coach in May following the Round of 16.

“If you lose one game when you play bad, you can congratulate the other team. But when you play how we played and they play how they played, we feel very bad.â€

Like in last week’s first leg, Al Hilal enjoyed the majority of the chances during the second leg but again were wasteful in attack and also found Western Sydney goalkeeper Ante Covic at the top of his game.

AFC Champions League MVP Covic was kept busy for the majority of the contest, particularly in the second half as the introductions of Yasser Al Qahtani and then Mohammed Al Shalhoub handed the home side an added boost.

But with Covic making numerous saves, including a superb one-handed block to deny Al Qahtani an almost certain goal with five minutes remaining, a sold-out crowd of close to 65,000 were sent home disappointed.

“We had many chances to score. Yasser had three chances to score alone and Al Shalhoub was also good. The players I changed gave something additional to the team and they had a good game,†added Reghecampf.

“We had a lot of chances but we missed them. If the ball does not come to our strikers they cannot score and that’s why we have to find a balance between attack and defence.

“I think the fans saw what we did in this match. The players tried their best. We didn’t deserve to lose this game.â€

    THIS NEEDS A MEME/CAPTION!

One of the few light-hearted moments amongst the tension at the live site was when his image came onto the screen and he was loudly booed.

What an epic and amazing achievement this morning!  So proud of all involved!

His words lack credibility. He is delusional.

If you're relying on the referee to win, then you got no hope.

They had 180 minutes to score a goal, and they couldn't do it

Too right. We've been on the receiving end of some poor decisions, or non-existent calls when it was a clear yellow/red/penalty, so I have no problem with lucky going our way on this one.

WSW, champions of Asia. Yeah baby!
