  • Alberto & Bridge Deliver Three Points For Christmas

    mack

A comfortable 2-0 win for the Wanderers against Newcastle at Parramatta Stadium saw the Wanderers keep first place in the A-League for Christmas.

The first goal came minutes before half time through Alberto Aguilar, Scott Jamieson launched a free kick from the right wing deep to the back post, Aguilar rose completely unmarked to knock a header into the pitch and towards goal. Jets keeper Mark Birighitti made a horribly mess, spilling the ball over the goal line to open the scoring.

Western Sydney had full control of the match and sealed the three points in the 70th minute. Dario Vidosic fired a shot that Birighitti palmed away, with a rebound from Vidosic falling to Bridge, he worked space and shot past the keeper with a crisp finish.

Newcastle had few chances, no-one bar David Carney providing any sort of threat to the league leaders, who have gone 5 clear of Brisbane at the top of the A-League.

crowd was ok for the scheduling. Alberto will be fine. He rolled his ankle that's all. Hurts like hell initially.

I thought we were a bit scrappy. Missed Andreu's composure.

Smurfs, Victory now lose players to the Olyroos and have ACL coming up. Great time to press ahead our advantage.

As for the scheduling. I could be wrong but I think the FFA are thinking TV ratings rather than attendance. no other sporting competition tonight. Will be interesting to see how it rated.

    Seasons greetings to all.

Shame about the crowd, let's hope that is the end of XMAS eve games.

NYD vs Adelaide will be massive though.

Tell me about it, I'm gunna be flat out guilt tripping people who didn't show.

No comments about Redders?  Must mean he had a solid game (which I thought he did).  Fred needs to take his 750k and spend it on one-on-one coaching from Bridge.

Redders did great, only one fumble that he quickly cleaned up.

NTS nearly did him in with that header, wtf was that all about ?

Just finished watching after I taped game  - seems we got a little bit of luck tonight. Jets possible could have had penalty claim and had a great chance called offisde which probably wasn't and most likely would have resulted in 2 clear attackers against Redmayne.

    Anyway we look otherwise comfortable.

Pio was quite lively, butchered one but worked hard all night. Solid at back more or less, sound in midfield and lively up front.

Set a record of 5 straight home wins and equal A-league record of scoring 2 or more in 8 straight games.

    Happy times

Oh and Merry Xmas grubs   :flag:

In fairness, even Zlatan himself would vastly improve after one-on-one coaching with Fathead

    Merry Christmas all

Sorry I was too busy thinking of Carneys ass.

Yes, Redmayne was solid today. A brilliant one on one save to deny what could of been a goal.

Forget the talk about what the Jets might've done... They were as useful as a hip pocket on a singlette.

The boys basically owned them from the get go, and if it hadn't been for some distinct lack of shoot fârken we could've n the game 5 or 6-0.

Bridgey as fárken outstanding. Between him & Neville very hard to pick a MOTM. Pio was okay, and. It the disaster some think. He had one specific shot that could've gone in if Birra wasn't on song, and one abysmal miss.

FMD Fat Head is back to 2012/13 form. He's banging em in like a sex addict at an all you can fûck brothel on pay day.

Butters had an ordinary match, unlike Pepper who was da bomb. Best game in the red & black I've seen from Trifro v.2.0.

Nice little cameo from Golgol; he didn't actually end up th. Any shots on goal etc etc but he was displaying the hunger you want from someone I need to prove himself in a squad.

Must say had a great time with Mick taking the piss outta Carney. I can respect him in ways no one else bar maybe Birraz deserves from the Jets. Carney is proud, passionate and intensely driven to do whatever he can. And if as part of that he drops the strides and shows us his ring hole, as. Icy as I don't want to to see it again, good on him. Better to go the full date than act like a half arsed clown like Thwaite.

Great night, very solid win. Onwards and upwards people

Can the coaching staff please tell/let Neville to overlap every time Castelen has the ball .No need to hang back or go inside Dimas or Nichols will do this . The reason why Hersi smashed it every time he got the ball was Polenz would pull one of the defenders with him . The most dangerous dribbler in the a-league is always battling 2 defenders .Imagine If Castelen is one on one with defenders all night even Pio will score .

Also probably best he stops crossing the ball in the air ( not sure but feels like 0/30 ) , along the ground only please Neville .

Merry xmas what a glorious night to be a wanderer

Can't say I agree with you regarding 'overlap every time Castelen has the ball', because there are times when it's not appropriate. However, I did note during the game that Newcastle were doubling up on Castelen every time he had the ball. That's a very good thing, We have so many players that can score. Having 2 on Castelen will mean we'll have an unmarked player.

Castelen is very consistent and making solid improvements in decision making. He beat players at will. Our best on the park today for me.

Piovaccari has Popa's backing, he'll stay, will improve but won't set the world on fire.

Golgol is exciting, can't wait to see more. He is a future champ if we can heal him and give him space to shine.

Sure no sensible coach would say do it every time but point is get him to do it more . **** it I'd love to see one game where he did it every time !

Bridge also needs to learn when to release a ball. As much as people like to bag Pio, he does get into some great positions and just doesn't get the ball.

There was a perfect example in the first half where Bridge had the ball at the D, Pio made a diagonal run and called for the ball to feet, Bridge sent the ball to the right wing and Castelen put a ball in that was deflected and went out for a corner. In the grand scheme of things, if Pio gets the ball there, he isn't going to miss that chance running onto the ball.

Entertaining game and well deserved win despite not looking as fluent when we have Andreu and Dimas are alongside each other. Pio did work very hard but he's paid to score goals and that miss was a shocker. I'd have preferred to see Baccus but Pepper did play well despite a dodgy first touch on many occasions. Not too many mentions for Neville of late apart from his poor crossing but defensively he has been very solid in recent weeks and some of his tackling second to none. We have proved again that we can win quite comfortably despite players having 'quiet' games (eg Nichols). A couple of big tests coming up in mid Jan so hopefully not too many suspensions/injuries for the games against City and Sydney. We have both Neville and NTS on 4 yellows at the moment with Alberto copping that injury too so defensively we could be stretched if 2 of those are out at the same time.

Some thoughts while the kids impatiently wait for Mrs lloydy to surface so they can open presents....

    - redders was very good. So much for reddy taking away his confidence or whatever. If he doesn't make that one on one save then they would have parked the bus and result would have been different. He also seems to genuinely enjoy interacting with the fans. As I said after last week - he makes decision mistakes but so do all keepers. He is doing a good job for us. On a related topic - bouzanis has packed it in - stuffed around for most of the warm-up.

    - for someone who was bought in with a rep as a poacher piovaccari sure struggles when chances fall to him. Composure of an u/12s striker. Only consolation last night was that there big money striker was even worse. For next season we need to make Andreu the marquee and bump up wages for Dimas and Alberto so we can keep all three.

    - popa has done an excellent job getting the most out of guys like Neville, pepper etc. In a capped league these guys are critical.

    - millicic was there last night. Anyone know if he was there in a socceroos capacity or if he was just hanging out?

Redmayne had a great game and proved he will fight for his spot. He did make mistakes against Perth but all keepers do....Birighitti should have easily saved the first goal.

Good to see Gol Gol playing hopefully he will start get more minutes.

    Merry Christmas

Pepper still worries me as a back up to Andreu, but I guess Popa sees something in him. Would like to see how Baccus goes there.

One thing that worried me last night was the amount of times Newcastle split our defence through the middle with a defence splitting pass which got behind our defence with a Newcastle player all on his own. It was mostly Carney who caused these problems. One of them ended a one on one save from Redmayne and another one a last ditch tackle from Neville. Then there was the crucial offside call which went our way. We really have to be careful how we mark up in defence and play our offside traps.

Gol Gol showed last night with a few more games he will cause problems on the wing to any defence. So much depth in these positions now.

Pio got into great positions last night but one gets the feeling he is not a goal-a-game striker. He does cause problems however and as long as other players score and he contributes a bit, then I guess we should accept what we have. Team is still scoring and looks dangerous.

Scott Neville is a fascinating individual, he's the reason the English language is continually challenged to create more descriptive words. One minute he's playing the virgin with no idea how to get it in the box then before you blink he's making a goal saving tackle. He's always in the thick of it. His latest miracle is to somehow avoid a 5th piece of cheese after claiming 4 in a row. Maybe it was Scott Neville born in that manger on this day all those years ago?

I propose a category of player rating in honour of the great man:

"The boy had an absolute Neville last night"

    Good on him!

    Merry Christmas!!! :woah:

    • Vidosic was scalpel sharp tonight when he came on.

    • Redmayne still flaps like an astronaut who has discovered a wasp in his space-helmet.

    • Neville had his best game in a Wanderers shirt. Almost ManU Neville-esque.

    • Romeo still had the twinkle toes like Fred Astaire, Mitch last night was more like Fred Flintstone.

    • The RBB looked like that particular piece of carpet at a popular part of the bar or a bloke’s head in the waiting room of Ashley & Martin.

    • As for Santa. Well he finally came, bit his sack was empty ;)

    • But as Stevie-G always said, after a win despite a dire performance, “It’s all about the 3 pointsâ€. Aye it is that laddie, it is that.
