  • Reds Stunned By Wanderers Fightback!

    mack

A brace from substitute Brendon Santalab has given the Western Sydney Wanderers an audacious come from behind win over Adelaide United.

In a feisty and spirited Round 2 opener, the Wanderers had the better of the first half, but came into the break behind on the scoreboard. In the 42nd minute Mitch Nichols lost the ball in an attacking position, and Adelaide broke quickly down the right flank. With Clisby out of position, Aspro slide across but couldn't stop Ryan Kitto from beating him on the outside. The cut-back found ex-Roar striker Henrique, and he scored on his home debut.

The second half introductions of Nico Martinez & supersub Brendon Santalab utterly turned the game around. With Nichols having a less than stellar game, and Bulut having more offsides than shots on goal, the subs combined with the rest of the Wanderers attack to hold the ball & string together passes in the final third and they had their reward in the 67th minute. Nico's refusal to panic in a right back position saw him find Jumpei, and from there Clisby tore down the left flank before finding an unmarked Nichols. Santalab pounced at the near post to turn the ball behind Eugene Galekovic for the equaliser.

Santalab inspired the Wanderers to take all three points, his crunching tackle on James Holland rattled the home side and from then on the visitors had the advantage. Santalab then silenced the Adelaide crowd with his 91st minute winner. Nichols tracked back & stole the ball from Isaias, found Jumpei who played a neat through ball back to Nichols who threaded a pass through the legs of Tarek Elrich & bisected two Adelaide defenders to Santalab, who stroked home with his sweet left foot.

The Wanderers took liberties that other referees may have punished more harshly than the two yellow cards incurred, but the side showed grit & determination, two qualities that were sorely lacking against Melbourne City & in the derby last week. The continued introduction of Nico into the starting lineup should help stabilise the squad & their ball retention, and give Bulut, if he starts again, better service than he received in his stint tonight. All in all, it was a performance punctuated with flying tackles & blistering counter-attacks and left Adelaide stunned.

Great smash and grab three points. Grew a set in a week , great to see some mongrel at last instead of namby pamby tiki-taka.

But shouldn't get too carried away defence still looks vulnerable , thankfully Adelaide had some

stumblebums up front and very different team from last year. Lenient refereeing went our way,

    Hey Pissants,

    Unlucky

So much worrying about last week and the team I forgot about the pissant town stuff!

Good to be reminded by such a comeback!

I know it's not the same Adelaide as in the gf but revenge never tasted as sweet only derby revenge at Moore park would top this

What a difference a week makes. Great result. Team still needs to get better but you can see the potential is there. Don't want to get ahead of ourselves but 2 home games against jets and ccm looks good for us. Let's make spotless our real "home away from home "

defence was improvement still as kosmina pointed out once a cross come ins man marking is all that should be worried about not ball watching or marking space. Henrique was on his own and found his own space.

2 home matches now, lets make the atmosphere at spotless a place to fear for opposition teams the next few seasons! :wanderturtle:

That was the kind of win that sits very fooking well in the memory. Not exactly the most fluent of playing efforts for a good portion of the first half, with our defence still about as flimsy as a tissue paper condom...but there was definite progress from last week. Mitch, Nico, Jumpei and Santa were freakin' engines, and Baccus went about his job quietly and mostly with decent effectiveness. Clisby was a bit of a curate's egg...a bit good, a bit shithouse, and the same can be said about Aspro. Redders was better than half decent and made some great saves (can't be blamed for that goal)

Kerem looks a bit off the pace awareness wise...he's suffering from an attack of PMS (Pio/Muscat-Syndrome). Not sure what to make of Cornflakes...underdone? Maybe wasn't expecting to be getting starts at this stage of the season, but now NTS has vamoosed it's up to RB to be our key CB.

Best thing was watching it from home and getting right into the maelstrom on social media as the game progressed. A big shout out to that bearded hipster prick Scouse Roar...whined like Trump at a Rosie O'donnell Nude Lookalike Comp after the win. Also getting into some very mild bants with an aunt who was at the game (just a few rows away from Cynth, FCB and I think Edinburgh). And one of my cuz's reckoned the atmosphere was the best he's seen at a Reds game (14,700+ not a bad effort from Pissantelaide).

Looking forward to next week now with far more enthusiasm  :good:

Yeah that would have been me.

What a great night. Before the match with FCB, Cynth and others, the match itself, probably lost my voice, and the chat and journey back after the match.

Let's not forget that security and police here are as impressive as the guys we usually deal with in NSW.

If this was the best Hindmarsh atmosphere ever then I feel a bit sorry for them. No comparison wirh Parra. Different league.

    Heart attacks all night:

    Clisby challenge

    WSW non threatening

Henriques whenever he had the ball

    Redmayne shot blocking

Aspro short slide tackle which lead to a break

    Santalab goal

    Santalab cannonball

    Santalab goal

It was a rough 3 points.
