  • Stop, Hamill Time!

    mack

A storming second half from the Western Sydney Wanderers that included a brace from central defender Brendan Hamill has seen them cement a spot in the top 6 with a 4-1 win over last place Wellington Phoenix.

After 40 minutes of sheer boredom, Brendon Santalab combined with Mark Bridge to open the score. Eschewing the usual "play out from the back" tactics the right fullback Josh Risdon fired a long diagonal ball over the top of the high Wellington defence for the run of Mark Bridge. After weaving his magic inside the penalty area, he laid the ball across for Brendon Santalab who was starting the game after Riera pulled out with an injury. From a few meters out it would have been harder to miss than score and Santalab made no mistake.

Before the celebrations had died down the visiting side were back level. A free kick from a long way out resulted in a game of pinball, Roy Krishna had a shot saved by Vedran Janjetovic only for it to fall to Sarpeet Singh who hammered it into the roof of the net.

With half an hour to play the Wanderers hit the lead from a set piece. Alvaro Cejudo whipped an inswinging corner to the near post, and Brendan Hamill rose to head the ball into the back of the net, making it 2-1.

The 78th minute saw Brendan Hamill claim a rare brace, as the Wanderers once again scored from a corner. This time Cejudo's cross to the near post was flicked on by Mark Bridge and the Wellington defence left Hamill all alone to finish neatly past Tando Velaphi.

With minutes to play they killed the game off with their fourth goal. After some combination play in the backline betwen Roly Bonevacia and Josh Risdon who burst through the Wellington defence, he beat Tando Velaphi to his touch over the top and cut it sideways with Chris Ikonomidis twinkletoes taking the ball around the covering Wellington defenders and tapping it into the empty net.

The win puts the Wanderers into 5th position on the table, 1 ahead of Adelaide United and 5 in front of Brisbane with both those sides having a game in hand. The Wanderers now have a Melbourne double in Rounds 24 & 25 before finishing up the regular season against the Roar and Adelaide at home.

Glad we won, the fck ffa chant was awesome. I think i might have enjoyed that more than the football on offer. Though it was fab to get a win and a small peak of lightness and playfulness from the lads celebrating the craziness of Hamills brace. That lifted the blanket of doom if only for a few moments

Key action of the night , though, goes to the kookaburra that swooped in and snatched something mid-air. It flew up to the roof and proceeded to munch it down.

Can someone tell me honestly any positives from last night. We were pathetic and the Nix played like Under 12's. If the Smurfs or Newy played them last night, we would have seen 10 not 4 goals.

I can't see a structure or system in anything we do.

Errors upon errors, gifting the ball in our defensive third.

Like Taurus, I can't  see us making the 6.

But..... happy to bite my big fat bum if we make it.

    Positives

    we won?

if you can’t enjoy a 4-1 win what can you enjoy?

The Var wasn’t used (or didn’t appear to be)

Risdon ball to bridge as part of first goal

lustica had a really good game

    Negatives

    The first half was dreadful

we scored yet you could tell that we would concede straight away

    wellington were laughably bad

    carrusca going off

    all the off field stuff

Why haven't I seen anyone use The Ham-ster yet? Happy with a win.

This forum is about the extent of my social media usage, so I only learn about the off field crap through here. If what I've read here is only half true, that's messed up. There's not even an 'on the bright side'. My own run-in's with the secos are trivial by comparison. Something needs to change.

My mates were away so for the first time in 6 seasons I watched us play from outside of the RBB and sat with my missus in the GA. Very odd experience to be watching from outside in. Didn’t even realise I was still singing, it’s automatic now lol

My main take away point: the A-League is bloody horrible and without that atmosphere in the first half, I’ve seen more exciting matches before I play on a Saturday.

The excitement amongst people in the GA when the RBB started up in the second half was more than noticeable. Proves 100% how important active support is.

well we ARE playing MV and City in the next 2 weeks. They are only a few points ahead. Anything is possible.

(I was kidding btw, but again...welcome to the A-League)

The Nix game was a must win after as Lloronte put it ""rubbish" display against Perth Glory last week.

For the next game against Melbourne on this form were gonna lose both games, if we do I have no complaints and we will miss out on the 6 the team as a whole is not playing to its pre season promise and as stated before we are in the 6 because everyone below us is somehow worst than us.

However if we manage any sort of results against the Melbourne teams it bodes well for the for our finals hopes because we would actually have a believable chance of winning at least 1 game in the finals series.

Once we win the dunny seat. I expect an apology to Josep 'the god' Gombau and I want to see you wear a kfc bucket hat for the whole of next season.

    Gumby's a goose not a god.

His policy of employing a lack of defence in midfield, is starting to rub off on our youth, who have conceded 4 in each of their 2 games this season.

In our matches against the Mexican teams this year we drew 1-1 against both in Melbourne, beat City at home 2-1 and lost at home 0-3 to Victory. We were pretty much the equal of Victory except for taking our chances. Despite our poor form most of the season we are still in touching distance of 3rd and 4th because they haven't been much better than us either. Based on the table we should have nothing to fear from any other teams other than the top two and we've even had good as well as bad results against them. So "statistically" we are at least the equal of the teams we are yet to play.

Having said that my expectations aren't high.

    Dead right .

for someone that works so close to the club I find it hard to comprehend the naivety.

can I just remind everyone that last season , we finished with 6 more points than we have now (with 4 rounds still to go).

the that bloke had the team for 5 years . The current bloke has had the team for 16 rounds .

If results go our way (even with a loss or two 3rd is still a possibility). It may be an indictment on the league - 10 teams etc, but it’s a reality .

Not going to throw the current gaffer under the bus just yet . Will give him a full preseason , recruitment and next season to see results.

... or the other option is to sit at home and sulk over an ex partner that dropped me night before  engagement party - lol ...  really don’t understand how anyone , after TP bailing could be longing for his return!

we talk about passion for the club the region, we stand for something etc .

well f*%# TP . He bailed on us. That’s unforgivable imo. And that’s because of how suddenly he dropped us into the **** .

rant done . See you all in the stands for finals . Ha

It’s irrelevant what Popa would or wouldn’t have done this year, gombau is the manager has been for 16 games, it’s his team. If he gets us to the top 4 he deserves huge credit and a chance to build in off season for next year. If he can’t make the 6 in this league then I can’t see club trusting him for next season. Top 6 finish and a decent showing in the semis should be absolute minimum

4 games to go, next two games are massive

Why did Popa run so quickly to what was obviously a graveyard for coaches and players for a number of years , what was he thinking and to leave the WSW's in the poo like he did.

I thought Popa was a great coach gone stale, 5 years is to long for any coach but surely he should have felt obligated to see out this year.

Loyalty is a big thing and Popa showed none to the club and along with it took the support staff leaving the Wanderers floundering,.

He should never ever be considered for a coaching role at the Wanderers again but should always be held in high regard as WSW legend !!!!.

No, I'm saying we're very easy to break down & or transition against when we turn the ball over. IMO that is principally due to the structure he's attempting to implement & the 'mature aged' players being selected to play as dual #10's.

Gombau's tactics are out of step with most if not all of the leading coaches across the globe

Thankfully we're in the A-League where there aren't many "leading coaches" or players for that matter.

You keep moving the goalposts. A top 6 finish was the bare minimum a few weeks ago, and now he has to perform well in the semi. Does a good showing mean winning? Or just losing "well"?

You'll never be happy with him, your mind is already made up.

And it's not his team when 95% of the squad was picked by someone else. Yes, he should do better with the cattle he has, but he didn't pick them to begin with.

Loyalty is unfortunately a thing of the past when it comes to players and coaches. It is just another job and when bucketfuls of money is offered they will jump ship.
