They're got the new Pool area all fenced off and are about to start construction, it seems - I saw it 2 weekends ago.

When is it meant to be finished - does anyone know?

The site is fenced so they can do archeological and geotechnical studies.

Good, I hope they hit an ancient indigenous area of high significance thus delaying the pool build indefinitely.......

hmmmmm, well we nearly have our stadium now....and the old pool site and whingers are long gone......maybe I should be a bit more understanding now.......

I believe the LED will only be at the main north east entrance. The rest is what you see is what you get in the photo above.

Like as in the metal struts?

The LED was meant to wrap around the entire O'Connell Street half of the ground, but the South end (left side of that photo) was removed due to concerns regarding lightspill into the heritage areas of Parra Park, in particular the Governors house. The bottom right corner will be the only major LED section (although there might be smaller ones on the main grandstand side).

I wonder if they are considering using any drop down fabric to replace the LED screens like they have in the roof, to 'hide' the steel beams. It looks very Brutalist with just bare steel & concrete.

It's not about the cost. It's about concerns regarding the LED screen being able to be seen from the Governors house.

Yeah...because there are lots of families and nice people hanging around Parra Park after dark........

And no one lives at the Governors house...just a few oldies rushing for the bog after their house tour.....

It is interesting to compare our 30,000 capacity with what is happening with the MLS in the US. Overwhelmingly, they have gone with 'soccer-specific' stadiums, with the newer ones at least part-owned by the club owners. This is a medium to long-term benefit as they maximise their income - an aspect we can not yet afford.

As a consequence, most new and planned MLS stadiums have lower capacities:

LAFC's 2018 Banc of California Stadium: 22,000 Opened April 18, 2018. Has 34deg stands (steepest in MLS - how will we compare?) and Safe Standing Rails in the North End for the '3252' Supporter Group.

DC Utd's Audi Field: 20,000 First game: July 14, 2018. Has 'bleachers' for 1,500 supporters.

Minnesota Utd's Allianz Field: 19,400 (future expansion to 24,474). To open Feb/Mar 2019.

FC Cincinnati have a 25,000 stadium set to open when they enter the MLS in 2019; FC Nashville plan the closest to our capacity with a 27,500-30,000 one for their entry in 2020, along with Beckham's Miami.

Of course none of these can match the rip-roaring success of Atlanta Utd's 51,000 plus current average at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a ground they can only open up to its full 72,000 capacity (currently) 5 times a year. Each time so far, they have broken the 70,000 mark. Check out the Atlanta Utd website for all the colour and sound of this other red and black sensation.

Also, see si.com (Sports Illustrated) Potential future soccer stadiums in America, for plenty of photos and information.

Ok, we will not be able to match the Atlanta crowds in size, nor have a football-specific venue, but Western Sydney Stadium is shaping up as one of football's better homes.

Funny that, so much concern for something that's on once every fortnight for a few hours compared to the night lights from the Parramatta skyline which is on every night. Just excuses.

Just looking at that latest pic, imagining all the people sitting on seats, they would easily fit the space left under the stand, that is a massive space surely something is being proposed to go there, even if it's another concourse with vending stations or extra toilets, something, anything and then clad it off.

Just looks unfinished with cement and stanchions.

34deg is the maximum allowable in Australia and 34deg is what i believe we are having.

But they are $30m under budget - how much would LED cost?

Is the project $30m under budget or did they allow $60m for contingencies and they have only used half of it?  The politicians learnt long ago how to state things to advantage.

Initially I thought it was a case of the state government had an election riding on the stadium. That’s why it finished on time. The pool is a local government project, we all know how long things take at this level of government.

Now hearing this, well this explains it!

It was the same excuse for the height of the stadium, if it was sitting above the trees it would be an eye sore. Can someone explain that to the planners who approved the 100 skyscrapers, now that’s an eyesore!

I’m guessing publicly they started off at $300. Ended up costing $330 but had an extra $30m up the sleeve for over runs. If it went over it would be a political PR disaster at the election. $360 is the number they’ve been hiding from us the whole time.
