  • Berisha Blasts Brace

    mack

A brace from Besart Berisha either side of a goal from Archie Thompson saw Melbourne Victory run out comprehensive winners over a depleted Western Sydney Wanderers.

The third meeting between the clubs this season went the same way as the other two, despite an early promising start by the Wanderers, the Victory opened the scoring after breaking down the left flank in the 25th minute as Khalfallah found Berisha with a perfect cross that the Albanian striker couldn't miss with a point blank header.

The Wanderers had their best chance of the night shortly after the goal, with a game of pinball in the Victory penalty area that saw Nathan Coe make a double save, first from Nick Kalmar then Kerem Bulut.

By the time an hour rolled around the Red & Black petrol tank was gone, and Archie Thompson took full advantage, as Iacopo La Rocca charged out well into the Victory half, completely missing the ball and setting up Khalfallah to beat Topor-Stanley to the ball. He delivered a simple through ball and Thompson made no mistake to slot it past his ex-teammate Ante Covic.

Khalfallah had a hat-trick of assists with a lofted through ball that Berisha latched onto, Covic flying out of his penalty area but getting nowhere near stopping Berisha from tapping into an open net.

The Wanderers next match is against FC Seoul in the Asian Champions League on Wednesday the 18th of March in Korea.

This is why not playing the A team is hurting the club, you can't send a bunch of kids out against Victory.

What we should have done is sent them out against City and then run over the top of Victory tonight, which we could have.

What's better a loss to City and a win against Victory or how it stands right now ?

Can't expect our whole XI to back up from Wednesday & don't take into account injuries?

Giving players who have to do a lot of running two full games in 3 days will destroy them physically.

Khalfallah exposed us with some brilliant first time balls. He is quite a player. Del Pierre is a freaking giant with guile. By seasons end he's going to be the best CD defender going around outside of our Spira. He was impressive to watch. Victory if they put it together should win the league from here before the GF lottery.

We actually played quite well first 30 mins with a make shift lineup and that goal against the run of player just killed us. The 2nd one was good night.

Covic should have come earlier on the 2nd goal and should have stayed at home on the last. Seriously out of form like some others as well I guess.

    Positives -

    • Bulut 90 mins in his legs
    • Castelen ripped that right side with ease first half
    • Perkatis got a run
    • As quite a few people left early 'to beat the traffic' i actually think they caused the traffic - as one of the last to leave I got a nice run home

Want to see Alessi next week against Jets and more time for Perkatis and Sorotio.

I saw that Ward replaced Trifrio, then I didn't see him again....

    Non existant :nono:

He wasn't terrible, lots of running but considering ward gets a run in midfield you know we are scrambling to get players available right now. Dropping like flies right now. You're right though, why not chance some youth out there? dont forget nobody had a decent game in the last 30, it was terrible from everyone. Edited by Prydzopolis

I just hope the FFA become a lot more fair when we win our 2nd Asian champions league tittle look on the bright side it's just a league fixtures next season

Perkatis, Alessi, Sotirio, Fofannah and the lad with the long Greek name I can't spell off the top of my head yet. Would like to see them play in our remaining fixtures this a-league season. They all have good potential but need more game time against the big boys. The more they play the better off the squad will be next season and the more confidence they we build. Sotirio  always is impressive when he plays and does very well. I hope we hang onto him for the long term. Much rather one of them than Ward and a few others there at the moment. I wonder when we will see Gol Gol again, thought he would have been back by now.

Actually I think it's better to do what he did so the likes of Takahagi, Ruka and Juric got 2 more days rest for the Seoul away game.

Winning against city or victory does it really matter? The A-league was already gone before both these games.

We always stood a better chance of beating City. I doubt even our best team would have beaten Victory tonight. I'd rather we shored up 3 out of 6 points than put our heads in the sand about this squad's ability to win and end up with 0 from 6.

And what if we lost both games.

When you are running low on players to pick, then you need to pick the best players for the game that you have a better chance of winning.

Guys we were very competitive for 60 minutes guys, if we hadn't had to play Wednesday I feel the match would have had a very different ending in the last 30 minutes.

Seems that all the opposition keepers have saved their best games for us this year. Can't believe we didn't score at 1-0 down when Kalmar blasted the ball into the side netting  :nono: . Would have changed the game big time had we have scored then.

Competitive for 60 minutes mostly due to efforts from fringe and youth players desperate to impress, and it was a very scrappy affair. We're fooling ourselves if we think Berisha, Thompson, Finkler, BFK and co wouldn't have carved us up over the full 90 minutes regardless of who we put on the park.

Victory are top of the table and high in confidence. We are bottom of the table with barely any confidence at all. The rest of this season will be mostly just more pain and disappointment. Roll on next season because this one can go die in a fire.

Lucky for me as a Liverpool and Canberra Raiders supporter, I'm used to frustration and disappointment :ninja:
