  • 5-4 Extra Time Epic Sends WSW To Adelaide Grand Final

    mack

A ridiculous comeback from 3-0 down set up an extra time thriller that ended in a 5-4 win that sends the Western Sydney Wanderers to the grand final in Adelaide next week.

In what was the true last match for the Western Sydney Wanderers at Parramatta Stadium before it is rebuilt, the two sides delivered an epic match that could quite rightly be called the best A-League game ever, for a place in the Grand Final against Adelaide.

The visitor Roar took the lead after 15 minutes. A set piece saw Andreu judged to have handballed inside the box with the resultant penalty being taken by Dimitri Petratos. Petratos' powerful strike evaded Andrew Redmayne for a 0-1 scoreline.

The night went from bad to worse for Andreu, as he added an own goal to his penalty handball. After giving away the free kick in the first place, he failed to maintain an appropriate bodyshape in the 6 yard box as Coronoa whipped in a fast ball into the middle of the area. A desperate flick of his leg couldn't stop the ball rebounding off his back, giving Redmayne no chance at all.

The self-inflicted wounds came again to see Roar take a 3-0 lead. A long ball down the right flank found Brandon Borello, his first time cut-back found Jamie Maclaren. The gun striker turned and fired, an unfortunate deflection from Alberto Aguilar caused the ball to tumble past the outstretched arm of Redmayne.

Thankfully for the Wanderers they were the next to score. Jade North gave away a foul with a poor tackle on Brendon Santalab, just outside the D semi-circle and right in front. Romeo Castelen stepped up to take the free kick. Jamie Young made a complete mess of his wall, giving the Wanderers a straight shot at the goal. The bad placement was compounded by a terrible reaction to Castelen's shot. The winger fired straight at goal, the keeper had taken a step to his left before the ball had been struck, putting him off-balance as the shot whistled past at a thunderous pace.

5 minutes before half-time the Wanderers cut the Roar's lead down to 1 goal. Dimas Delgado spotted the Roar defence playing far too high up the park, and set Brendon Santalab a task with a neat ball over the top. Santalab burned James Donachie and his idiotic man-bun for pace, then turned Donachie around, fired at near post past Jamie Young to make the game 3-2.

Momentum stayed with the Wanderers in the second half, and it didn't take long for Castlen to secure his brace and put the Wanderers level with Brisbane. A set piece was cleared by Corono but only as far as Scott Jamieson. The fullback lofted the ball back into the penalty area where it was knocked down by Nikolai Topor-Stanley into the path of Mitch Nichols. The ball sat up reasonably well and he shot at goal, it was palmed away by Jamie Young but Mark Bridge pounced, his shot rebounding off Young only to fall right at the feet of Castelen who fired into the roof of the net to make the game 3-3.

Until this game no team had ever come from 3 goals behind to take the lead. On the hour mark Dimas fired a free kick into the penalty box, where Young elected to punch, it looped into the air. Thomas Broich & Romeo Castelen tangled as the ball came down, Broich apparently losing it in the air, allowing Castelen to strike a thunderbolt on the half-volley that blew past Jamie Young.

Brisbane, having to score to send the game into extra time, began to press higher and higher, and eventually that paid dividends. A counter-attack started by Hervas ended with Tommy Oar, who released Henrique, he attempted a shot only to screw it wide but perfectly into the path of Maclaren who had a tap-in from 6 yards out to bring the game level once again. Extra time inched closer and closer with neither team willing to lose in normal time.

The first half of extra time began with Wanderers dominating the play, with a handful of chances going begging from Bridge & Castelen among others before they finally took one in the 102nd minute. Shannon Cole's neat work in the middle found Mark Bridge who played a 1-2 with Dario Vidosic. A placed shot had Young diving to push the ball away, Bridge reacted first, he pounced on the loose ball and slammed the ball across the face of the goal, Vidosic's near post run was rewarded as the marquee attacker flicked over Young to make the score an incredible 5-4.

Brisbane were out on their feet, and even with the help of Queensland referee Peter Green on their side, weren't able to equalise again to take the game to penalties. The Wanderers triumphed after 120 minutes of scintillating football, and they will face Adelaide next Sunday in their 3rd attempt to win the A-League Championship.

    No respect for the wolves.

Technically that match is considered a draw for statistical purposes under FIFA regulations, because it was won via penalties, which are considered separate from the match.

They can stick their stats up their arse..... Wolves won... end of lol

Greatest night for me since Boro came from 3 down.... they scored a last min winner

Sure felt like a win to me. FIFA can get ****ed. They still owe the wolves $2million for pulling the plug on the world club cup that year.

Following Liverpool's 2005 Champions League win after being down 0-3 to AC Milan at half time, the following clip was emailed around to a global LFC email list that I have been on for more than 20 years.  As a then 30 y.o., I have no shame in admitting it drew tears the first time I watched it.

Following last night's epic encounter, I thought it timely to share this with everybody, yes, even you Everton & Man Utd fans, because there's a common theme.  Pay special attention to the final closing comments of Richard Keys, the Sky Sports presenter.  His final words are quite poignant & could easily be applied to what we have just witnessed & experienced last night...

Sadly, the HD version has been removed from YouTube due to copyright, & the picture is shi#e, but you get the idea...

As WSW members & fans, we are so privileged to be part of something so very special as a club & supporter group, & for me personally, something I often do not appreciate until the moment has passed.  From the very moment I start packing for Adelaide, I will cherish very single second.  My season 1 home shirt is ready to go...

It's hard to know what to add ... incredible. Atmosphere was the best it has been at Wanderland since the ACL final, and to think, some people were finding it hard to get too excited beforehand!

On the game, did anyone else think it was a strange decision from Aloisi to sub off Broich on 60 minutes? I know he was partly at fault for Castelen's third, and their midfield was being dominated, but still.

You can say what you want about Popa but when Aloisi panicked and had emptied his bench in the 72nd minute and Popa made his first in the 75th and still had two up his sleeve going into extra time there was only ever going to be one winner. That was the difference in the end.

    • Hey Jamie: did you hear us in the end? Did you enjoy the show? Did you get a whiff off the post-game La Banda jam outside of the ground? Have a save trip back to Brisbane and enjoy your break.
    • Hey Mapman: you can come out from underneath the rock now. The last WSW game in Parramatta has been played. You can breath easier - for three years, that is. Then the party will really start.
    • Hey Riva: did you enjoy the game?
    • Hey you Neville-Jameson-Castelen-Bridgey etc are not good enough experts: did you have a good evening?
    • Special greetings to the Popa-out fraction. Please don't bother coming to Adelaide. Take you negativity to Marconi club next Sunday or some place else.

Ecstatic ( but exhausted)  we won but the GF is next week , today wasn't the GF- thought you would have waited till then to call everyone you like to give a hammering to out. Premature jubilation perhaps.

From one  perspective the game was ridiculous and could have gone either way, a series of defensive and tactical shambles by both sides just more so by Brisbane - a classic choke saved us from a humiliating loss. And we were playing at home.

From our perspective set pieces are still a huge problem , Jamieson's positioning  and marking is a worry - Kamau will skin him if he  plays  like that in the GF. The complete lack of tactical flexibility by the coaching staff  is amazing - up a gaol and still playing attacking instead of closing it up - result McLaren unmarked and gaol but we got away with it.

I know everyone is on a huge high  but we can't give  Adelaide a 3-0 lead and expect to win.

I think we can win if hopefully Popa has learnt something about what we did wrong , not just the things we did right tonight.

I would be approaching this game differently than other games this season and with a tweaked formation to counter Adelaide not playing "our football" as Popa calls it which is code for playing  the same tactics whether winning, losing , drawing or playing home or away.

Hoping for a  great Wanderers victory - duck egg out of three grand finals will be unbearable. So I hope you have the opportunity to call me out again next week - will love it.

And that's exactly the point, isn't it? Will we remember and treasure the nil all against Adelaide a few weeks ago when we lost our grip on the premiere's plate? The game of chess where the team did just about everything right apart from scoring? Or will we remember last night's shambolic game of football which got us through to the GF?

For me reaching three GFs in four years and yet again qualifying for the ACL is a measure of success. Had it not been for La Rocca's and Hersi's red cards late in S1 and NTS's injury in the S2 GF we might be a one or two time GF winner already. And deduct the heavenly interventions the Roar enjoyed they could as easily be three time "chockers".  That's just how it goes in football, and even more so in a capped league.

I hope you will have reason and the inclination to say something positive, some time in the not too distant future.

Broich is 35 and can't last a whole game. This season he's usually been subbed off at about that point and has even started on the bench and come on for impact in a couple of games. You can rest assured if he still had the legs he would play 120 mins, but his career is winding down and he can't manage it (he's hinted next year could be his last).

What a game! What a night! Probably the best game of football I've ever seen live, and what a send off for Wanderland! So sweet to come back in that way. It probably knocked a few years off my life but it was worth it. Brisbane's tears are delicious, nice to give them a taste of their own medicine.

Now to organise a epic road trip for the GF.

    Watched the game.

    • Haven't been humming this much since Al-Hilal.
    • Alberto and Andreu were instrumental in three Roar goals. FMD.
    • I've been saying it for two years: Castelen is our most skilled/best football player. In recent weeks he has also become (with Santa) our most effective player. I'd be spewing if he was to change club within the league.
    • Loved Dario as No 9.
    • The guys behind the Roar bench seem to have gotten to the Aloisi brothers. Ross answering back to the crowd after the 4:4 = hilarious. Pity that both parties won't get a chance for a repeat performance. It'll be far less "intimate" at Spotless.
    • In Gameiro's absence, MacLaren is now my new "favourite" player in the league. Aggravating an opposing home crowd with gestures - who does he think he is? Berisha??
    • The RBB was mental. Absolutely mental. After the goals in second half and ET my ear drums overloaded and I started to hear static noise. I recall the same happening when Santa scored the winner in Gosford and the equalizer in Melbourne. Yesterday it happened three times in one game. Mental.
    • I do not recall the class of 15/16 celebrating as much as they did yesterday. Alberto usually looks quite sheepish when the team is facing the NT post game, but he underwent a personality change in the 120 minutes of the game.
    • Santa is an animal. He got under Sigmund's skin two weeks ago at the beginning of the game, and did the same with North yesterday right from the word go.
    • How North didn't get a second yellow I do not know.
    • 20k capacity crowd huh? How so with empty seats in the RBB? Oh well, it was good to experience the NT full again.
    • And that was it with Pirtek.

Ok I have sobered up from last night and I apologise for any of my drunk posts on here.

    My take on the game:

    - Crazy 10 minutes of defensive blunders allowing the QLD roar lead 3-0 after 25min.

    - Good to see Andreau remaining composed after his handball in the box and and conceding an own goal from his arse

    - I dont know what got into Romeo last night but he was in absolute beast mode, best game I have seen him play for us since he joined. He lasted the whole 120min as well. His freekick was class and his 3rd goal from outside the box was class as well, see what happens when you shoot *****?

    - It was also good to see Santalab trolling Jade North all night

    - Hervas, at one point, I thought he was going to sign for us this season, thank **** he didnt. Absolute pos last night.

    - Maclaren, classy striker as he is but hes as classless as Og the dog. I wonder if his ears are still ringing today

    - RBB, nothing more to say, the bloke next to me in 55 couldn't believe it after we scored our 4th goal. he almost broke down in tears.

I wasn't sure for a while there if I would make it to the game, but I did and flippin' hell, that was epic. It's weird that at 3 nil down, I still thought we could do it. That we actually did, well, I honestly don't know what to say other than what a fantastic show of grit and determination from the lads. I was an emotional and proud Wanderers supporter last night. Even if they had gone down having equalised, I would have been proud. One of our best games in terms of never say die.

The Tifo was magnificent. The RBB outstanding. Truly. I know the crowd were quiet at times, but honestly I think the collective nerves made it had to find a voice at times. But that last 30mins, there was screaming and cheering and encouragement coming from Bay 1 that I have never heard before. Wonderful

I have no voice, but glad of it

Oh, and I am off to Adelaide baby! It will be my first interstate away game  :woah:  :woah: Fly in fly out cause we couldn't do two day trip due to work and kids commitment, and I have paid a stupid-crazy-ridiculous amount of money for a 10hr jaunt  , but I just don't care. I am sooo happy right now and so excited to be part of this, win or lose. Tho, you know, lets win the damn thing!
