  • Reds Stunned By Wanderers Fightback!

    mack

A brace from substitute Brendon Santalab has given the Western Sydney Wanderers an audacious come from behind win over Adelaide United.

In a feisty and spirited Round 2 opener, the Wanderers had the better of the first half, but came into the break behind on the scoreboard. In the 42nd minute Mitch Nichols lost the ball in an attacking position, and Adelaide broke quickly down the right flank. With Clisby out of position, Aspro slide across but couldn't stop Ryan Kitto from beating him on the outside. The cut-back found ex-Roar striker Henrique, and he scored on his home debut.

The second half introductions of Nico Martinez & supersub Brendon Santalab utterly turned the game around. With Nichols having a less than stellar game, and Bulut having more offsides than shots on goal, the subs combined with the rest of the Wanderers attack to hold the ball & string together passes in the final third and they had their reward in the 67th minute. Nico's refusal to panic in a right back position saw him find Jumpei, and from there Clisby tore down the left flank before finding an unmarked Nichols. Santalab pounced at the near post to turn the ball behind Eugene Galekovic for the equaliser.

Santalab inspired the Wanderers to take all three points, his crunching tackle on James Holland rattled the home side and from then on the visitors had the advantage. Santalab then silenced the Adelaide crowd with his 91st minute winner. Nichols tracked back & stole the ball from Isaias, found Jumpei who played a neat through ball back to Nichols who threaded a pass through the legs of Tarek Elrich & bisected two Adelaide defenders to Santalab, who stroked home with his sweet left foot.

The Wanderers took liberties that other referees may have punished more harshly than the two yellow cards incurred, but the side showed grit & determination, two qualities that were sorely lacking against Melbourne City & in the derby last week. The continued introduction of Nico into the starting lineup should help stabilise the squad & their ball retention, and give Bulut, if he starts again, better service than he received in his stint tonight. All in all, it was a performance punctuated with flying tackles & blistering counter-attacks and left Adelaide stunned.

Biggest sooks on Facebook. Holy ****. Remembers Georgevskis challenge on Nichols last season, RED clear as day. Ankle snapper. We go on to lose 2-0, we were all like meh, he should of been sent off but whatever we didn't take our chances. Nobody bats an eyelid.

When it's Wanderers eveyrbody has a wank.

I love being the most hated team in the league.

    Feels really good this morning...

Might it be too much to ask CCM to get up and cause a major upset this afternoon lol Now THAT would cap off a perfect weekend.

Why would he get suspended when he did it in the heat of the moment after a goal whereas Mitch went over after the game?

We got an early win all that matters still there were moments we looked shakey at times and if Adelaide finished better the result Would be different but **** them they didn't and Santa came on and does what Santa does

Still we looked better at the back for the most part and everyone knows we are better with niko on the field it's just when popa thinks he is ready to start

The good thing with him coming off bench is has have defenders already with 60 mins of running behind them - works to his advantage same with Santa

It will be interesting if Aspro did enough to keep Borda out

Clisby did enough and really put in good shift

Up top SBW said if well Bulut needs to work on his awareness a bit more but also if he gets to play with Niko more it will benefit him

One thing he can fix now is he's ability to stay onside I mean seriously how long has he been playing and it's like he doesn't know how to time his runs, if I was popa I'd make him It 20 to 30 times before each training

Giving him good service can never happen if he doesn't learn to time his runs...

Overall better passion and mongrel in the side last night and getting a win over the champions always does the confidence good

Heard the fox commentators giving it about Bulut being selfish last week etc...did I miss something? Of all the criticisms from last week - i didn't think that was one...but i only glance at the ****wits on the facebook

I thought his effort last night was admirable, got caught offisde sure but he's not even close to be being Pio'esque

Did like seeing him arm in arm with Santa in the dressing room celebrations...a good sign all around imo

No squad development thread but Milligan wants to come back to Australia in Jan. Would be an excellent fit in our squad. Provides great defensive cover and leadership. Frees up Dimas to play a free roll too.

Works for me. Would love Millsy at WSW. Great work ethic and he was one of the best players on the park in either side in the friendly against England earlier this year. A 100% all-out player. Give him NTS's wages...

He is going to victory as a 'coach'.

Just looking at the Henrique goal and it was textbook example of how not to defend . We had 6 players in the box against 2 yet Henrique still got the ball turned and shot without anyone being close.

Aspro beaten much to easily to allow the cross , Clisby not helping Aspro just marking a dead space , Neville has Henrique then inexplicably retreats to the back post and lets him go , Cornthwaite not watching Henrique at all , Baccus ball watching completely ignoring anyone making a run into the box when there were 3 defenders closer to Kitto .

Marking is way too loose on the wings , crosses are going in too often and the marking in the box is amateurish .

Jeez we are going to be good when this gets sorted out .

Our girl was born 9.08 last night.

I think that's when our revival started.

Forget Santa, my girl was the inspiration for the come back haha.

Wife didn't agree with Brenda so we named her Gabriella.

    congratulations

Bulut is a month or two away from being a Pio Mk2. Showing all the same characteristics like running into the wrong areas, being caught offside, not reading what his team mates are doing, fluffing whatever chances he gets and generally getting frustrated.

I hope he comes good, but I've always been in the camp that thought his legend was bigger than his talent.

Will be pleased to be wrong. Surprised, but pleased.

Was discussed here a couple of months back. Asking way too much money.

I don't really rate him to be honest. Although he would fit into another team who played a different way. We've always been a team who has played well with smaller, more elusive players up front, with good football brains who are able to combine and interplay with each other to unlock defences. Bulut doesn't fit in that picture at all. Neither did Pio.

The figure quoted was 1 million per season. Naturally the club jumped at it, and Milligan is now - well, still playing in the middle east. In related news: his current employer let it be known that Milligan isn't going anywhere.
