  • Western Sydney Wanderers Are Champions Of Asia

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been crowned the Champions of Asia after a stoic 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, the Wanderers winning the two legged tie 1-0 on aggregate following Tomi Juric's goal in Sydney in the first leg.

The 64th minute strike in the first leg at Parramatta Stadium proved to be the only goal of the tie, with the "Blue Wave" crashing forlornly against a Red & Black fortification manned by a team who refused to concede a goal to their better resourced opponents.

In the 18th minute Al Hilal had the first chance of the game, swinging a free kick from the left flank that the Wanderers weren't able to get anything on, thankfully for them neither did one of their opponents, a right boot stuck out but agonisingly distant from making contact.

A minute before half-time the first penalty shout of the night was waved away by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Inside the area a ball rolled into the path of the flying Nawaf Shaker, Antony Golec clipped the right foot of the attacker but the theatrical leap perhaps weighed the incidence in the favour of the Australians.

After the break it was another stonewall penalty turned down, Salman Alfaraj latching onto a through ball deep in the right corner of the penalty area and was clearly brought down by Ante Covic but wasn't punished for the indiscretion. Another potential penalty came when the ball was kicked at short range into arms of Brendon Santalab, Nishimura judging that it was ball to hand rather than hand to ball.

The Saudi's pushed on and on, pressing for a goal that would take the game into extra time, and it looked for all money like they had one in the 84th minute. A cutback found talismanic striker Yasser Al-Qahtani, his shot from near the penalty spot had no right to be saved but the big hand of Covic found a way. The ball bounced once before spinning out for a corner just inches away from the goalpost. The save was the biggest moment for an Australian keeper since Mark Schwarzer in the famous shootout against Uruguay.

The Wanderers had precious little attack of their own, the best chance coming from a mazy Vitor Saba dribble that released Labinot Haliti, the shot being blocked desperately. Western Sydney didn't need a goal however, an eventual 6 minutes of injury time passed before the final whistle blew and the Wanderers were officially crowned Champions of Asia.

The immediate post-game scene was marked by disgraceful conduct from the Al Hilal players, with Matthew Spiranovic being spat on and headbutted, a melee threatened to breakout but cooler heads prevailed.

The extraordinary end to the Wanderers maiden assault on the continental stage ended in a victory that few if any would have predicted in the first year or even second year of the club's existence. The championship is an eternal credit to the tactical nous of Tony Popovic, and the resilience of every man to have pulled on the famous Red & Black hoops of Western Sydney.

The Club World Cup now looms in December, the Wanderers joining San Lorenzo (CONMEBOL), Real Madrid (UEFA), ES Setif (CAF), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Auckland City (OFC) & hosts Moghreb Tetouan in Morocco from the 10th of December. The Wanderers will face Cruz Azul of Mexico for the right to face European giants Real Madrid in the semi-final. Such a class would be the biggest competitive fixture for an Australian side since South Melbourne took on Manchester United in the 2000 edition of the competition.

Tony Popovic spoke after the match about the win, "We were called a small club yesterday. Today we are the biggest in Asia."

The next match for the Champions of Asia is against the Wellington Phoenix, on Friday the 7th of November.

    Al Hilal Coach...................scoreboard..............

You had more chances, more possession etc and still couldn't get one goals. Football is about getting goals on the scoreboard, nothing else

    Sore losers all round...

Riyadh: Coach Laurentiu Reghecampf felt Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal side “were the best team over the two games†despite losing the AFC Champions League final 1-0 on aggregate to Australia’s Western Sydney Wanderers following a goalless draw in Saturday’s second leg at the King Fahd International Stadium.

Two-time Asian champions Al Hilal dominated for long periods during both legs at Parramatta Stadium last weekend and the King Fahd International Stadium on Saturday, but failed to find a breakthrough over 180 minutes.

And with Tomi Juric’s first leg strike ultimately proving the difference between the two sides, Al Hilal missed out on joining Korea Republic’s Pohang Steelers as the only three-time Asian champions.

“We had bad luck and we had many chances. We were the best team over the two games,†said Romanian coach Reghecampf, who was appointed as Al Hilal coach in May following the Round of 16.

“If you lose one game when you play bad, you can congratulate the other team. But when you play how we played and they play how they played, we feel very bad.â€

Like in last week’s first leg, Al Hilal enjoyed the majority of the chances during the second leg but again were wasteful in attack and also found Western Sydney goalkeeper Ante Covic at the top of his game.

AFC Champions League MVP Covic was kept busy for the majority of the contest, particularly in the second half as the introductions of Yasser Al Qahtani and then Mohammed Al Shalhoub handed the home side an added boost.

But with Covic making numerous saves, including a superb one-handed block to deny Al Qahtani an almost certain goal with five minutes remaining, a sold-out crowd of close to 65,000 were sent home disappointed.

“We had many chances to score. Yasser had three chances to score alone and Al Shalhoub was also good. The players I changed gave something additional to the team and they had a good game,†added Reghecampf.

“We had a lot of chances but we missed them. If the ball does not come to our strikers they cannot score and that’s why we have to find a balance between attack and defence.

“I think the fans saw what we did in this match. The players tried their best. We didn’t deserve to lose this game.â€

They called it a choke when we lost to CCM in our very first season of an already established league (CCM, who would have also been called chokers if they lost).

They called it a choke in our second season when we went up against the most successful team in the A-League, at their home ground.

This win is on the back of our first season ever, our first ACL ever and our team was decimated half way through. We had an off season while other teams were able to keep up their match fitness. We had lasers shined in our faces against two of the biggest clubs in Asia and at their home ground in front of packed houses.

The rest of Asia just choked at the hands of WSW.

    - First I dream of us getting 0-0 then we actually do (superpowers?)

    - Covic deservedly MVP

-Tomi should have cut back with that defensive mix up

    - Do we actually get a star. Or will the FFA make up some stupid rule.

    - Saudi coach had the biggest superiority complex. Maybe he should get counselling.

    - In sunday league football, spitting at an opponent or ref is lifetime ban. but I bet this guy'll get a couple of games max.

    - Attackers score goals, defence wins games.

-Al hilal can't complain about ref, that's part of the reason we play across two legs

-Sore losers are the worst. They're still saying they're the better team but THEY LOST

-Can't wait for our next home match, there'll be a trophy parade or something.

-I'm assuming players like mooy and ono get medals because they contributed to the early stages? They deserve them as well.

-This is an amazing feeling. Incredible. I can only imagine how the lads are feeling.

-CHAMPIONS OF ASIA. Next stop: THE WORLD!

Even if we lose the first game, the next game is on the 17th which is the 18th here and not time to get back for the 19th. Win and we are gone until the 20th at least..

Really? I think that link might be wrong.

I thought the game on the 17th is for 5th place.. that is if we lose to Real Madrid.

I'm pretty sure if we lose first game vs Cruz Azul, we're out.

The idiots who shone lights in Ante's eyes, crashed into our bus in Guangzhou etc. need to seriously think through the psychology of it. They clearly don't understand the backs to the wall strength WSW thrives on. I have no doubt it spurred Ante on to greater heights, and made the team more determined. So thank you idiots, you deserve some credit for our victory.

It is great and remarkable that we are Champions of Asia, so congratulations to everybody!

For Popa, this is not the end but the start. He has to help build a team that can maintain possession and create chances far better than we did tonight.

Tactically it was superb as we got the result, mainly thanks to Covic and poor refereeing.

However, the rebuilding of this side into one that can hold the ball and terrorise an opposition's goal more regularly needs to start now.

Popa can truly be an immortal if he can successfully complete such a transformation.

Let's enjoy this, but also look ahead and play better in the future! The WCC awaits, but let's show the world we can do more than survive!

Our possession was awful and we need to address that for sure - but agreed, right now I don't flippin care. We won, now lets kick some A League butt

Let's not forget that this was the last match of Season Two. One premiership, two grand finals, and now winning the ACL in two years - spectacular achievement.

Airport tomorrow, then Season Three can well and truly begin. Bring on Ruka, Adeleke, Spira, Castelen and much more of Saba.

We're guaranteed at least two games!

    edit: To clarify:

First match: Dec. 13: vs. Cruz Azul

Second match: either fifth place playoff, or vs. Real Madrid
