  • Santa Snaps Perth Streak

    mack

Goals to Romeo Castelen and Brendon Santalab either side of a penalty from Andy Keogh have given the Wanderers a 2-1 win against Perth.

The win sees the Wanderers kick 3 points clear at the top of the table although the match between Brisbane Roar and Adelaide is certain to see one of those teams close in. A tight first half ensued, with the Wanderers dominant in possession, Glory elected to sit back, defend stoutly and attack on the counter rapidly. The main item of note in the half was the loss for the Wanderers of Dario Vidosic, who came off with what looked like a hamstring problem.

All of the key moments came after the hour mark, as Perth began to tire and the Wanderers asserted their stranglehold on the game. Romeo Castelen opened the scoring in the 62nd minute on the end of a lightning counter-attack. Central defender Alex Grant leapt onto a corner, but his body shape didn't allow him to get much power. Liam Reddy, starting his second game after his derby debut, released a long throw to Mark Bridge. Bridge managed to turn on the ball, finding Mitch Nichols, who quickly laid it on for Castelen. The Dutchman turned inside with his first touch onto his right boot, the second slamming into the base of the far post and into the back of the net.

The lead lasted only a few minutes. Practically from the kick-off, Perth broke down the right hand side through the pacy Chris Harold, who managed to run around the outside of Nikolai Topor-Stanley and was dragged down by the Wanderers captain. Andy Keogh's stutterstep run-up helped to send Reddy the wrong way, but questions will be asked of how referee Strebre Delovski failed to order a retake when players on both sides had encroached into the penalty box before the kick.

Super sub Brendon Santalab entered the fray and scored the winner with a dramatic looping touch. Bridge provided the assist, a lob over the Perth backline found Santalab, and as the ball flew high, Santalab connected with a jumping volley, getting a touch to the ball that teased Ante Covic into a despairing dive and landed just past the goal line.

Perth were run ragged in the final stages, opening themselves up at the back, with Romeo Castelen having the best chance to seal the game with a rocket that crashed into the crossbar. In the end the Wanderers did enough to secure the win, although on another night it could easily have been Perth walking away with the points, as they had more than enough chances to do so.

Great finish to the game, this is what happens when you give Santa enough time to make a difference.

Castelen looks miles better when he takes his chances, was still guilty of holding on to long a couple of times, bit miles better

Thought Neville had a good game tonight too.

The commentators were doing my crust in tonight. We had 64-66% of possesion tonight, but apparently Perth were the talking point for most of the game. Seriously? For me that was one of the best, gutsiest, westy game of the season. I think we staked our claim for the premiership and the championship tonight. I for one can not wait. COYW.

No it's all about the Santa what a ******* goal don't go hard on topaq he was all class tonight Toilet seat!!!!!!

Yeah it was a really bad penalty to give away but NTS played well aside from that. Both goals were class. Loved seeing Castelen scoring, bridges ball to Santa was superb and Santa's ninja kick was legendary.

First half was a bit too much backward movement and Perth had clogged up the midfield. They forced us to retreat and play from back for a while but we held up.

Happy to take all three and bring glory's trot to a screeching halt.

Let's hope Adelaide can bury the meow.

Poor first half - we seemed to forget how to go forward  :unknw:

But much better second half, showed some Western Sydney grunt and got stuck in. Castelan's goal was lovely and Super Santa Saves the day

Reddy did the job and confident on the ball. Makes a difference

Question though; why are our backs so deep when Reddy is feeding the ball out? Topor is positioned on the back line. I don't get it???

Forget the game, the highlight of the night was when that pill looking mascot thing playing that very questionable game at half time couldn't see the ball and kicked the shiit out of the bloke trying to help by putting the ball in front of him hahahaha

i loved the huge cheer for santa when he was called to go on.

    naturally he delivered.

and romeo scores his best goal ever, and follows it up with a cracking strike against the bar.

sure he stuffed another chance but the tide is turning for him.

hope vidosic isn't hurt too badly, probably 4 weeks out i guess.

I was wondering the same thing at first. We didn't seem to move up with any urgency.

But then I realised it seemed to be our tactic to get Perth to come out of their own half. And try to stop them parking the bus. It worked in the end, but it was frustrating me at first.

But then how good was Castelen and Santalab's goals!!!!

It's to try and help play out from the back. Push the CB's wide, one of the DM's comes short.

Enjoyed my night at Parra. Great finish from Santalab and Castelen. Crowed good and atmosphere took off second half.

Seems to be a lot of discussion about Santa's goal with an alleged high foot.

It looks to me as though Warren wasn't making an attempt at the ball, when he realised he wasn't going to get to it first he just tried to cut across in front of Santa. You can see on the replays he isn't even making an effort to clear the ball.

Yes Em it is frustrating to watch as it is our style playing out from the back to induce them to play higher up. I'm glad they plugged our short goal kicks from the start or it is even more frustrating to watch.

Santa delivers once again...For a bloke that only comes once a year he certainly brings us much pleasure....  :ninja:

It was very fortunate that the golden hand of St Ante couldn't pull off the hand of god save once again, in the same net but we will take it as Santa's flying ninja kick deserved a goal. No keeper could have saved that.

Castellan the unexpected sub played well, hitting the post twice and one that went in. I thought Butters and Bridgey had one of those games like last week, where things just didn't fall their way, but they still didn't stop trying all game which is great. I hope Dario is ok but it didn't look good at all.

Neville had a good game, there, yes I said it....

Reddy is a gun and in 2 weeks in a row could possibly claim 2 assists sort of...  :woah:

Great night topped off by meeting my stalker after all this time and had a great half time chat with the lovely Captain Jess. Just as expected she is as beautiful in real life as she is on the screen. If only she could get used to my say it how it is attitude. Sheesh people should know me by now....

EDIT: See I even liked your post above. Progress.

    My thoughts on the game

    POSITIVES:

    - Santa, as classy as ever, give him the ball and he will score!

    - Romeo, I know what Romeo is capable of, give him time, space and he will score goals like that, give him space and he will tear the defence up. Unlucky not to get the second. Warren Couldn't handle him.

    - Reddy once again was immense! saved us from conceding 4 goals tonight and was in great position to stop those!

    - Alberto is just a class above defender, had Keogh in his back pocket the whole night.

    - Nichols was was all over the place, looks like he was given a free by popa to roam around the midfield and attack to get the ball. Came close twice tonight, should have scored when he was open

    - Dimas winning the ball over Castro was joy to watch

    NEGATIVES

    - NTS needlessly giving the ball away by trying to play from the back, just clear it!

    - NTS again should have needlessly conceded that penalty straight after our goal, he should have let him go and we had alberto to cover, picked up his 8th yellow and will miss next weeks game.

    - I can't believe the amount of headers Glory players won tonight, luckily they got nothing out of those but I thought it was pretty poor we allowed Glory to win headers

And Kudos to Kenny Lowe for acknowledging us as the best team in the league by a country mile :D
