  • Markus Babbel Sacked

The Western Sydney Wanderers have sacked manager Markus Babbel following the club's 1-0 loss to Perth Glory.

A dismal set of results has seen the Western Sydney Wanderers part ways with German coach Markus Babbel, the last few results of a 2-0 loss to Wellington and a 1-0 loss at home to Perth the straws that broke the camel's back.

After last season's failure to make the finals series, along with the return to Parramatta there was high expectation for this A-League season. They have not been met. With the Wanderers winning the first three games of the season in a not too convincing fashion, the side quickly collapsed into a black hole with a 7 game win-less run that included losing 5 games in a row. Rumours of feuds within the coaching staff, ex-players slating the club's management for their treatment of players, and ongoing grudges with A-League officials all coalesced into making Babbel's continued presence at the club untenable.

Babbel's time at the club resulted in an extremely poor sub 25% win-rate, and with little improvement on the horizon the club took action and relieved the German of his duties. While Babbel was a charismatic figure, and rebuilt the squad in the post-Gombau era the results on the field were not up to the standard required from the owners of the club and it's supporters. His best signing has been Swiss goalkeeper Daniel Lopar, but a lack of cutting edge has been marked by the total failure of expensive marquee striker Alexander Meier despite his pedigree as a former German Bundesliga golden boot winner. Meier departed and was replaced by Irish international Simon Cox, however the new striker will be leading the line with a new manager taking control for their game against Gosford.

No successor has been named at this time, although rumours swirled earlier in the season that ex-Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat would take the Wanderers hot seat despite his being linked to a top flight job in Western Europe, wild stories of Graham Arnold quitting the Australian national team and even the return to Australia of legendary coach Guus Hiddink all named.

Assistant coach Jean-Paul de Marigny has been named the interim manager.

    :good:

As Cynth said, he has bowed out very graciously, and without bitterness, it would seem.

    That was touching! :(

I know a lot of people want JP gone but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for the moment, see how we are doing in a few weeks and see if any improvements are made

Simon Hill said on the Fox Sports pod that Babbel and us have got the raw end of many VAR decisions.

And he is right, Kris Griffiths-Jones hates us.

I know they're Fox employees, and would be mindful of not damaging their product, so to speak, but these media personalities (ie experts, but not affiliated with the club) should speak out more.

I know they do speak out.

But it's all too late for this now.

It feels like we've been screwed by bad refereeing decisions more than most teams and it's certainly cost us points, but it doesn't change the fact that we've been playing bad football. Had more decisions gone our way some of the draws would be wins and some of the losses would be draws, but that would just mean that we're at or around 6th place and would probably have held on to Babbel for a bit longer, delaying the inevitable. Babbel never showed anything to suggest he knew how to turn the football side of things around and if anything our siege mentality backfired. When decisions went against us our players lost their heads and played worse (looking at you Ziegler).

The issue with constantly getting bad refereeing descions is that the coaching team and players gave up.  They knew that as soon as they speak up they will get fined no allowance for criticism. When you see players ready to walk off at different games you know that they have given up. The body language said it all. True we have not played well but an extra 4 or 5 points would have made all the difference. Confidence plays a major factor in football.

I hate using this word but in the end it comes down to " mentality " .I would rather have seen us get focused and determined on winning in spite of whatever the officials did. This isn't a criticism of Duke but this is where he needs to step in and say wtte......."**** 'em....lets beat them anyway....lets go boys ". Turn the anger at officials into a resolve to win no matter what. Play to be the victor not the victim.

Agree 100%. Think Georgievski is the best (worst) example of this. It just kills the attitude in the team and you start seeing the ref as the opponent instead of the opposition. Creates a defeatist mentality where you think whatever you do you can't win.
It's a big problem and one I think Babbel manifested with his comments on refs in the media. Will take some doing to turn around.

All teams get bad decisions we got more than our share, but if we were playing better footy it wouldn’t happen.

Take Adelaide if you camp on the edge of your box and give the ball away you are inviting trouble

it’s not a conspiracy, the referees are just ****, and we just need to get on with it

100% agree, our tactics early on were to score early & then defend for 90 minutes with a low block. There is only so long that can work

If we sit back, put all the pressure on ourselves but create very little then we leave lots to Lady Luck. Sometimes it will be a stunning team goal or a wordlie, other times a controversial referee call. We have had more than our fair share this season, at some point you hope that might even out

We've allowed VAR to play a role in numerous results, by having a porous defence at times & not being clinical in front of goal

So with Babbel gone perhaps we can heal a few WSF rifts and welcome back FCB and Manfred sometime soon i hope.

@FCB has been lost to the WSW football community for a while, or at least temporarily.

He's a shattered man. He now longer understands football & needs to take a breather.

    We keep in touch.

@ManfredSchaefer is larger than life & is always present (unless I'm seeing things) at pre-game locations knocking back a beverage or two

I have to say. Those two show so much passion for the club. I put some respek on their names even tho I may no agree with somethings they say.

Decent blokes and will ALWAYS happy to have a beverage or two with them when the opportunity occurs.

I really wanted MB to stay for at least till the end of the season and let him see it out, things could have changed or maybe they would have stayed the same we will never know but i don't see things changing under JP. I don't see how this will motivate the players to do better, if the club had a replacement for MB already in place as a head coach then OK but to put in an caretaker for the rest of the season just feels like they pulled the trigger too quickly. If we didn't make the finals again then OK let him go, but we never know what could have happened. Its not his fault the imports didn't work out, his not a fortune teller. (Especially what happened with Rado, could have been a very different situation right now if he didn't get injured) I feel the club should have taken a step back and though about it a bit more

As Bozza stated MU were so close to giving Fergie the flick before he won the FA cup and the rest is history, 3 YEARS HE DID NOT WIN S**T but they stayed with him and gave him a shot. I'm not saying we should have given MB 3 years but we cant just turn over manager every season in a league like this. It takes time to get your imports right and creating that great team chemistry within your squad. It isnt good for the club or players. Gombau was a different story and i believe they made the right decision in sacking him but in saying that if JT makes another bad call i think its time for him to go. Since becoming CEO back in 2014 after our ACL win we have regressed under his management of the club. At any other big corp company he would have been let go by now or demoted back to general manager which he was doing quite well when in that role.

But what is done is done and the players need to have this break to get their minds right after what has happened and prove to themselves that they can win games again.

NOT HAPPY JAN, especially now with these smurfs laughing at us!

With injuries and others trying to get match fitness. I hope our season is not over before it comes.

I had worries back then. This to me is one of our biggest concerns, 3 months later and Babbel said after the game on Sunday at the press conference  "that we

have to work on our fitness level. To many players are not 100 % fit". 14 games into a season and players are not fit. How can this be  possible at this level?

I think we had the same problem last season also. Many people have said on the forum here we don't look fit and it shows and have question our strength

and fitness coach. Could we get Heffernan and Beauchamp to  write out  the programme they did back in the days with Popa and give it to the current coaching

team to implement. At least they could last 90 minutes  or more.

    Exactly my sentiments.

If Babbel has any ambition he needs to genuinely interrogate his tenure here and understand where it went wrong. And if possible learn from it

He really seems like a top guy though. That video farewell had me tearing up, you could see the sincerity. Im sad it didnt work out; for us and him

And now the team and club must move positively and purposefully forward

so we've tried the EPL big name who is a really nice guy as it turns out and a snappy dresser. I say the board will say that didn't work lets go completely the other way this time

    ....so Musky it is then:xnod:

I think after forking out all that cash for Herr Babbel, that the board may be more frugal when they appoint our next coach.

Might be a local, might not. Guess we'll see.

I'm not keen at all on our little Mauritian (JPdM). Don't like the vibe he gives off.

    Time will tell.

It's arguable there should be changes at all levels given the calamities the club have been through. JT, the director of football. All of them! If we can't get rid of the owners, get rid of those we can. Only problem is, is it better the devil you know? Who is to guarantee that their potential replacements will do better? The club doesn't have a great record of replacing people with better alternatives.
