  • Inept Defence & Referees Cost Wanderers

    mack

A combination of awful defending and awful officiating have ruined any chance the Wanderers had of defeating Melbourne Victory tonight, as they lost 3-0 despite a huge domination of the midfield & possession.

25 minutes of early possession for the Wanderers ended with Victory opening the scoring against the run of play. Artiz Borda making dual mistakes in between another mistake from Dimas. Borda made a suicidal sideways pass to Dimas that he underhit, on the stretch the defensive midfielder had his own weak backpass intercepted by Fahid Ben Khalfallah, after Redmayne made a neat save, Borda had a complete airswung when he was under no pressure and should have cleared. Instead it sat nicely for Berisha, who fired a cross to Khalfallah for a tap-in from 5 yards.

The second half should have seen Western Sydney given the chance to equalise from the penalty spot. Jumpei Kusukami was cut down inside the penalty area by Jason Geria, the only person in the stadium to not realise it was a penalty was the referee, and he somehow decided with Geria getting no ball, and chopping down the attacker, that it was a Victory goal kick.

Victory were then handed a second goal with substitute Jai Ingham heading the ball onto his arm and into the goal past Redmayne. Once again, the referees did their best Stevie Wonder impression and wheeled away without so much as a hint of hesitation in awarded the illegal goal.

Of course, with the Wanderers trying desperately to get back into the match despite the officials deflating them at every decision, they were hit on the counter for a 3rd goal that ended the match as a contest. German import Max Beister came in for his debut, and not long after he had a tap in as no-one in the Wanderers backline bothered tracking his run from the right wing.

All in all, it was another night that promised much initially, but deflated through suicidal defending, and the same old refereeing standards that plague the A-League and prevent it from being taken seriously by the Australian sporting public.

The Wanderers face the FFA's golden child Melbourne City next week on Friday the 18th of November at Homebush Showground, so the officiating is unlikely to improve any time soon. It remains to be see if the defence will do any better.

Are there any stats to compare how many players we've used since inception compared to other clubs? 🤔

Well that's my 4th Victory away trip and I'm still yet to see a win, in fact there is not a single interstate away trip I've done that we've won haha but as always, it was rad.

One thing that pissed me off though was the two morons who struggled with the concept of shutting their mouths during the Remembrance Day ceremony and had to be told by several people, including the supporter marshal. Real single digit IQ operators.

What happened to Hammil? He was never the quickest bloke but these days... if a horse ran like he does, they'd shoot it. Something is not right there. I think our real issue lies in the fact that the majority of our defenders are so slow, it's like they're running in sand. That is arguably something that tactically you should be able to offset though.

Honestly though, I'm getting sick of all the complaining, it's getting over the top. We didn't play great but there's some serious exaggeration and a lot of criticism of factors that I don't think most have a clue about whatsoever ie. finances. So much early success in such a short space of time has created some very unrealistic expectations I believe.

All a bit dramatic after a loss aren't we lol.

    I hate losing but

I'm just happy to have a club.

I think people can see what the next 6 months is going to look like, so they just letting it all out now. The Sydney FC loss and yesterday's one is hard to swallow. Part of it is due to the fact that we are a revolving door club where no one wants to hang around. Only Santalab imo represents what the club is about. I think it goes deeper than just the losses.

All combining to make a difficult start to this season...

    • Being away from Parra
    • Nothing happening towards the stadium, if we could see demolition and firm things happening it would give us all a lift
    • Soulless atmosphere in and around SOP
    • ANZ being so shyte
    • Spotless not ideal
    • The smurfs running away with it
    • Getting turned over by the smurfts
    • 8 derby games without a win
    • Getting turned over by MV
    • Stupid mistakes and points thrown away at home to two sides that will more than likely finish outside the 6
    • A perception that man for man we have gone backwards compared to last year

Things just feel flat and we need a lift on the pitch, all of the above can be made much better with a good performance and 3 points next Friday night. That is the best thing about it... there is always the next game and hope I guess......

I'm cursed. Every season, the player I've gotten on the back of my jersey has ended up leaving too. Why won't you let me love you WSW? 😭

Couldn't be bothered reading the thread.

    I'm guessing it was depressing.

I actually thought it was our best performance of the season and it has given me hope as to what we might be able to achieve this year.

Borda made a f*cking meal of the first goal.

Victory hadn't a kick of the ball, and yet are 1-0 up.

    That hurts.

Redmayne made a f*cking meal of the second goal and it's game over.

We fell away in the last 15-20, but we completely bossed them for most of the match.

    We'll beat City on Friday.

Well the hysteria has reached a new level.

    - Going to be a long season if we keep this shite up,

    - time for popa to go,

    - we are a disgrace,

    - we were hammered 3-0

This is either people sitting "watching" games while playing on their phones and missing much of the match, people who just watch the "goals" or "goal mouth action", or people who don't understand anything about football

The score bares no resemblance to what happened on the pitch.

Thankfully there are some sensible posts here to keep things in perspective .

Are there some things that need fixing ? Of course.

Is it time to get a new owner, sack the coach and overhaul the team ? Only an emotional hysterical wreck would say that

We have lost 2 games.... After this round, that's the same as victory, city and perth.

After this round, Only 2 teams will have lost less games than us, Sydney and brisbane

Those inexplicable 4 points we dropped v Ccm and Newc mean we are in 7th spot on 6, as opposed to equal 4th spot on 10

Ok, we got some of the recruiting wrong. It happens with every team.

There are no structural / long term issues within the team or the club.

we need to fix 3 positions ,

    - a top class no 9 to take the pressure off santa who at his age will make his best contributions coming off the bench in the last 20.

    - a top class cb to replace borda

    - a proper no 1 keeper

    Redmayne hasn't stepped up.

Borda isn't able to play in this league.

The jury is still out on bulut, but he's looking unlikely to be the 10-12 goal striker we need.

All those people complaining about Neville saw how important it is to have a specialist rb... Hamill cannot play there, and almost every victory threat started from his side and his poor defending

The burden of captaincy is not sitting well with Dimas.

    Bruno has improved.

Mitch is not right. I don't know why his form has dropped so sharply in the last few games

Jumpei ... Creates opportunities, but the final final product needs work.

Nico will be (is) one of the best players in the league.

To all the "popa out crew", i think you are the same crew they wanted him out after 3 rounds last year.

Some people are just born whingers and only feel right in themselves when they complain and can be miserable

If we don't improve or make the changes necessary over the coming 8 weeks, I'll join you, but for now, I'm cautiously optimistic that the people who bought us the success we've had to date, know what to do from here

I'm glad I went back through and read the posts.

    Toon ftw.

I don't get this played well , best performance of the season stuff at all. Just frustration rubbish.

It's not about looking good , that's for the Miss World contest -it's all about scoring goals and not

conceding goals. And in that regard we were shyte and copped three goals from a very ordinary Victory

    team.

As I said before am getting sick of the same excuses game after game. Our crowds will start to suffer

    if this continues.

If you know what the problem is fix it.

It can be and should be turned around.

    First 45 against the Jets......maybe.

We play too narrow. That's what happens when you have 2 CAM posing as wingers. Its easy for teams to defend against us when all 4 of our attackers are standing around the D.

If we don't have the personnel for 2 wingers, then change the damn system/formation.

2 weeks in a row the opposition has been compact and we can't get through them because we have our entire attack coming through the middle.

Bring on Cole and Shabow. Guys that are itching to play for us and will give everything they've got. Might give us some width too..

I thought we were better in Perth.  Any team can play pretty triangles when the defence sits back and waits for the inevitable error.  We do it every Sunday morning in my kickarounds where we play SSG's and hold the ball for minutes at a time before inevitably getting caught out and copping a goal because we're too lazy and slow to track back.  That's just like the Wanderers.

Fact is though we have personnel problems so we're just going to have to cop it on the chin and keep hoping.

We got creamed 3-0 how in any stretch of the imagination does that equate to playing well.

What would playing badly mean - losing 12-0 ?

I will say we played well when we win 3-0 or even just a one goal margin. But losing 3-0 never.

Issue is the back four plus keeper. The first goal was against the run of play we had total domination and then.... If I am being honest I wasn't shocked based on recent games. The defense is so shaky that its almost like your expecting them to make a mistake, I mean Borda WTF shite pass to Dimas when he had 4 Victory players around him and then that air swing after Redders made the save. Aspro and Clisby needed to be more alert on Bozanic and we were lucky the assistant was cross eyed for the Victory second goal before half time.

The penalty call on Jumpei was a BIG turning point and we copped it after that. Its almost like our attack has no confidence unless if Santa is there. But it all started with that Borda mistake, seriously we were killing them before that point they didn't even a shot until we made a mistake, and then the typical frustration reaction came out of the players.

Bulut and Jumpei really need a goal I just feel that its starting to get to their heads. Hell I think Popa might be losing a few hairs I never seen him so fired up before. If I were to estimate where we finish I would say 6th place and lose the first final game and struggle in ACL if our defender continue to let down the team. Were up to round 7 now the team needs to lift for the big game on Friday against the Vi$ion and defenders must improve especially with attacking power that team has

Agree to certain degree that score doesn't always equate to the 90 min of football.

BUT - defensive **** ups are a recurring theme of EVERY match we have played so far so the 'we played great and were unlucky' line can't be trotted out here imo.

I agree with Riva. This is not u8s SSG where its about "playing for fun and well"

This is a results business. "playing well" is related to the result. Possession doesn't mean anything without any end product.

Playing well means defending and communicating as a team and not gifting the opposition 3 soft goals.

Playing well means doing something with all that possession and actually testing the opposition keeper.

Playing well means getting a result.

We did none of that. Can't say the entire team played well when in reality it was less than a handful of players playing ok.

I'll admit, the midfield hounded MV and won a lot of the 50/50s and we got the ball back very quickly in periods.

But again, it means nothing if you do nothing with it and play so narrow and predictable that the opposition doesn't have to try very hard to nullify your attempts in attack.

    Agree

We haven't been unlucky in any of the games. We have given away stupid goals in all of our games and not put away our chances.

It's all very well to play pretty football and have the majority of possession but if you conceed daft goals you will get beat.

We have conceeded the most goals in the league, 6 Rounds in, that isn't bad luck it's crap defending.

Im not a Popa out fold the club the world is doomed sort of guy, but so far where we are in the table is where we deserve to be based on our performances.

The positive I see is that in patches we do play well, sort out the defence and the rest will follow. That is easier said than done especially given the players we have there.

    • Thats an odd blow up for someone who was making some very specific claims about Ninko and the 3 year coaching plan a few days ago... If you hang around here for a while you'll find theres plenty of people with strong links to the club, as well as the fact that information gets moved around NPL circles pretty freely. Theres no secrets
    • The discussion in the Squad Development thread shows this. Normally if we miss the finals that thread becomes a bloodbath, where we all want to cut the duds out of the squad and start again. This year the consensus is that most players should stay. There's an above average A-League squad there, but Rudan managed to finish in the bottom half of the table with them.
