  • 10 Man Wanderers Succumb 1-0 To City

    mack

Artiz Borda's red card left the Wanderers in a deep hole they were unable to overcome, after Ivan Franjic hammered a thunderbolt to open the scoring.

With the new year came a new formation for the visitors, with Tony Popovic under pressure to produce results, he elected to play a somewhat unusual 4-4-2 formation, with Mitch Nichols & Nico Martinez taking up a fluid attacking duo, with Jumpei Kusukami, Jaushua Sotirio, Bruno Pinatares & Kearyn Baccus making up the 4 man midfield. Ex Sydney FC goalkeeper made his debut for the Wanderers.

20 minutes into the game and the home side were in front. From a corner, Kearyn Baccus was first to the ball but he only managed to find Ivan Franjic lurking on the edge of the penalty area. The fullback attempted an audacious side footed first time volley on his right foot. It swerved like a missile into the top corner of Janjetovic's goal.

Unfortunately for Popovic, his formational innovation was short lived. After half an hour Borda was given his marching orders. With the ball out on the left flank, Borda marked up Fornaroli, and Borda made contact with his elbow into the strikers head. The referee judged it worth a red card, and Borda left the field as his opponent remained prone on the turf.

The rest of the game was marked by Melbourne's inability to punish the Wanderers with a second goal, and the Wanderers trying in vain to force an equaliser. The best chance for the Wanderers fell to substitute Lachlan Scott, who had a ball fall nicely at his feet, only to see his snapshot on the turn fly just wide of the post.

Popovic will be forced to make a chance to his defence once again, with the likely result of Robbie Cornthwaite & Jonathan Aspro playing together in central defence. It remains to be seen if Popovic will stick to his new strikerless formation against Sydney FC.

The worst thing about the red card, down to ten men, poor we us "valiant in defeat" performance is that it distracts from the utter crap we played in the first half hour. We seem to be getting worse, more disjointed and more in denial the longer the season goes.

    100% this.

    Silver linings

Cornflakes > BordaBaby Baccus > Neville > hammil

Team with Jumpei > team without Jumpei

Although Baby Baccus did well for his brief cameo on the field there is a big difference between playing the last 10-15mins & starting a match. We don't have the luxury at this stage of starting a youth player to be taken off at 60 or even earlier.

That's the only issue, time on the pitch, but he has raw talent. This week and last weeks performances showed me enough to see he has a lot of potential. He moves well on and off the ball, has really good touch, comfortable on the pitch, can cross a ball and finds space. His defence is good too, he won a few duels against keogh last week.

I like Neville, and baccus isn't actually better, but I feel Baby baccus has more potential

Fair point, but I'd rather focus on the good. That first half was uttttttttter ****. Total, complete crap.

IMO our second half was better than last weeks game vs Perth taking into consideration our lack of a man, our lack of a striker and the absolllllute flogging the players copped in the first half (they had 78% possession)

Just remember that young alessi did something similar in the derby, just have to make sure he fulfills his potential.

I'd rather be an FFA play thing that wins games than a team that played amicably but loses.

They had 17 shots to 4 and two thirds of possession. In other words, they were content with a 1-0 win and stayed in second gear.

    Dreadful.

We were poor at the first half and the only thing positive was it was only 1-0. Second half Nichols really put in a captains effort to try and almost succeed in bringing us back in th game. Aspro i feel was the only one solid at the back today. But most in the starting 11 had their worst game that includes martinez his passing range was really off today. The subs were effective unlucky for Scott, baby baccus you can also tell is still very raw and cornthwaite really settled the backline

Call me naive, but I think we can get a draw next week. Our defence is solid, Dimas will be back, and Nico will start unlike last time.

Unfortunately we don't have a striker (although that's a bit harsh on Scott...that was superb technique to get that shot away, so unlucky) so can't see us winning. Unless Eli Babalj makes a heroic return to form & fitness next week.

Showed a lot of fight and effort against a good attacking City team. That was the positive.

The fact we played better with 10 men than with 11 sums up everything wrong at the moment.

Popa needs to bottle that spirit and keep a clean sheet next week and pray one deflects of Sotorio's arse next week into the goal.

The back 4 actually did pretty good last night, and having Jedran there who talks a bit more seemed to help.

Fornaroli should be cited for his stomp of Borda, cause and effect rule in play here. I don't excuse Borda but if someone stomps on you - most people react.

We were never going to beat the FFA Melchester City but really, we have nothing in attack.

But I tell you what, beating the Smura next week would erase all the dissapointment that has been this season

One thing I can't understand is....

Cornthwaite did one dodgy backpass and got banished for half a season while we have been forced to watch borda **** up week after week after week and there he is on the team sheet again.

I didn't understand it while it was happening and it's even harder to get my head around it now after how well he played last night.

Did anyone else notice that Baby Baccus (we're all going with that nickname now, yeah?) had K. Baccus on his jersey last night.

Like seriously, that's really going to help differentiate between him and the other K. Baccus on the field too :nono:

No, please stop referring to Keanu as Baby Baccus, he is Baccus Jnr.

Baby Baccus is yet to play for WSW

Burn that 442 formation with the squad we have as I wonder if things would of been different if we kept the same setup as it's the players costing us. Next week will be interesting if we try 442 again.

I thought Junior/Baby Baccus did more in 30 minutes than senior Baccus has ever done on the field of play last night.  Which wasn't a lot but there's more promise in him than his fraud of an older brother.

That we're moderately happy with a 1-0 defeat and stats that show we were dominated even when it was 11v11 show how far our stocks have fallen this year.  Roll on next season and the all important failure of our continual revolving door recruitment policy.

If Kerem Bulut was playing we'd have had 3 KB's and a Vic Bitter. Instead we had a north Borda XXXX.

Didn't Baccus Snr give the assist to earn us a point last week?

Last night Showed how badly we got our foriegn players wrong..

    Borda stupid send off (again)

Then down to 10 one nill down which player does the coach take off? Overseas player needs to be the guy you look to in the situation to get you out of it, not the first player you sacrifice (as he has been ineffective)

Borda has surely played his last game for WSW, and will be remembered as yet another s***house signing.

Aspro was immense, Nice looked good at times but was off his usual standards. Vedran was great.

Hamill continues to be a waste of space, Keanu showing great promise. Nichols just looks tired and frustrated.

Time's ticking, need a visa striker. Borda needs to be f***ed off ASAP. As in 10 minutes ago.

Hamill was not a waste of space last night, he did a solid job at RB. People forget that his average performance at the start of the season was at LB when he is not naturally a left-sided player. His most natural position is at CB also, so him managing to get forwards down the right and contribute to attacking play is a positive sign. He also made some very key defensive tackles, especially the block on Fornaroli's shot that would have had us dead and buried.

Again, comparing them to Hamill at RB is apples and oranges. K. Baccus showed some good signs but Neville has been one of our most solid defenders for the past year. He can be frustrating at times going forwards but he has improved immensely in that area. Also if not for Vedran, K. Baccus would have gifted City a goal with a horrendous backwards pass in our defensive third.

One pass doesn't make up for being an embarrassment on the field consistently.
