  • Another Insipid Performance At ANZ

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers were demolished 3-0 by a clinical Besart Berisha inspired Melbourne Victory outfit tonight.

A perfect hattrick to the Albanian hitman gave the Victory a well deserved three points, leaving the goal less Wanderers clinging to the top 6 by a thread. The only major change for the Wanderers was the reintroduction of Andrew Redmayne in the Wanderers goal, with Jerrad Tyson suspended after his red card last week against the Mariners.

Brendon Santalab had the opening chance of the game, not long after the starting whistle he sliced a right foot shot well over the Victory goal. 10 minutes into the match Jack Clisby, who has been a standout for the club since his arrival as the replacement for Scott Jamieson, nearly had his first goal for the Wanderers, a rifled first time strike on his left foot, it looked certain to nestle into the side netting, only for Victory keeper Lawrence Thomas to make a fingertip save to turn the ball onto the post, it ricocheted back off the woodwork and across the face of goal.

Melbourne's strike duo of Maxi Beister & Berisha combined to open the scoring arguably against the run of play. Redmayne proved once again he is not good enough to be a first choice goalkeeper in the A-League, Beister tried a speculative effort from upwards of 35 yards, he made clean contact but it should have been a routine save or at the very least a shot to be turned behind for a corner. Instead Redmayne stumbled before diving, being left on his knees and having to make a double handed block with zero control. As usual for Redmayne, his save fell into the path of the opposition striker and Berisha had a tap-in.

As long as his replacement only signs a contract to the end of this season, I do not care who replaces Redmayne. His performance has been howler after howler, he consistently costs our team points & goals (so far this season he's been directly or heavily at fault for goals against Perth, Newcastle, Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory & the Mariners), our defence clearly has no confidence in his ability to command his area, his reflexes are among the slowest in the competition and his distribution is woeful. The time has come for Tony Popovic & our goalkeeping coach Zeljko Kalac to bite the bullet and get rid of Redmayne in January.

Brendon Santalab had two clear cut chances to give the Wanderers a share of the lead or better, one a header from 6 yards out that he sent straight at Thomas, and a shot from a cutback that the normally gun striker blazed past the goal just minutes before half-time.

Instead Victory extended their lead after the break. The Wanderers defence stood off substitute Jai Ingham, and he delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, Berisha who is hardly known for his leaping ability outflew both central defenders & his header was past Redmayne before the keeper had even lifted his hands to attempt a save.

The final chance for the Wanderers to salvage the game came in the 81st minute, with another shot from Clisby that Thomas made a good low save. Mitch Nichols was sliding in at the back post and made a meal of his attempt to turn the ball home, ending up prone on the turf and being judged to have handled the ball.

Directly from the restart the Wanderers had switched off, Thomas booted the ball upfield for Jason Geria to flick on behind the defence, Berisha outpaced Artiz Borda before stabbing the ball past Redmayne with his right foot, securing the colloquial "perfect" hat-trick.

Tony Popovic must make changes. The midfield duo of Pinatares & Dimas have been exposed this season as lackluster in defence & are barely involved creatively. Yet again, the side wasted numerous set pieces with the baffling habit of taking short corners that always end up with two or three backward passes before losing possession. How is it that at a professional football club, that no-one can accurately hit a corner into the penalty area with enough confidence that no mucking around with short corners is required? One of the long corners nearly created a goal, with a block from a defender keeping the ball out. Despite this achievement the second corner was played short and wasted.

The predictable substitutions once again failed to make an impact. Week after week, Popovic makes the exact same substitutions even if his side is losing. After an hour one of the foreign defensive midfielders is replaced with another defensive midfielder. At some point between the 65th & 75th minutes a winger & the striker are replaced by another striker & another winger. The formation is always 4-2-3-1. It doesn't matter if we're playing a team in last, or we're down 1-0 at home.

The first season Premiership & incredible Champions League victory are heading from recent memory into history, and no manager, whatever their achievements, can continue to fail at winning trophies, or to keep losing to rivals, without their position as manager being questioned. Popovic needs to turn around his side and to demonstrate he can adapt to ongoing tactical issues and not just deflecting the failures solely onto the players that he recruited with press conference after press conference where "the results will come" or "the players need to take their chances".

This season results coming, but those results are heavy losses to bitter rivals. It is not good enough.

One final note is that I will applaud Clisby & Neville, the only two players that decided to face up to the crowd post game to thank the fans who showed up and stayed to the bitter end.

Western Sydney play Wellington Phoenix away in Auckland on Saturday the 17th of December.

if I don't leave with 10 mins to go, my 5 year old and I don't get home until gone 11pm. So thanks for the kind advice on when I am permitted to leave but no thanks. If the team actually give me something worth staying for then I might be more inclined to deal with the fallout.

Still pissed they didn't come over.

They stood there confused & didn't know what to do. They then waited by the goal while Mitch went over to the RBB....

    CLisby did too.

But how can they not know what to do. It's actually pretty pathetic - says a fair bit unfortunately.

It was Neville & Clisby that came over.

Mitch walked along the advertising boards, ummed & uhhed a bit, thought about jumping the barrier then went **** it and walked off.

Oh yeah I remember that now.

Dimas needs to answer for that.

    He should be telling them.

Obviously I am not talking about situations like yours. We had a couple of thousand leaving early. They are not in the same boat. Plenty left because they only sing or follow when we are winning. Big difference.

    Never ever

what if it's like the a-league where we're all in the same league

First Goal: Why does Redmayne palm it straight out? Has to palm it to the side if he can't collect it cleanly. A great striker can feed off scraps & Berisha scored off nothing

Second Goal: Such great movement, loved the way he found his way in between the two CB's. Disappointed how neither of the two CB's took responsibility for him & left him free to finish with a class header

Third Goal: Highlights how slow our CB's are, neither of our CB's have that pace & it showed.

Not that pissed off as I expected. This season has taken a similar pattern every game, we dominate, create chances but fail to score chances. We don't capitalize on our dominance & a defensive error gives the opposition an undeserved lead.

Again the opposition follow a similar pattern, ride out our attacks & expect WSW to fluff there chances, then score off the one clear chance they create. MV did very little wrong, keeper fantastic, didn't give the ball away in key areas & kept us out.

Turning point for me was that second goal, to play so well without a final product & from pretty much nothing the game goes to 0-2, that hurt. The crowd were hurt, the boys looked hurt & the confidence was gone. Stopped playing football & everything fell apart.

When they had the opportunities, they took them. We only have ourselves to blame.

Perfect post said everything I wanted too.

We looked good first half couldn't get breakthrough. We move on.

Martinez and Jumpei for mine didn't have their best games and Santa was off, if this happens with our ability to leak goals we are going to lose most nights.

I thought the RBB was in good voice, could even hear WST from opposite side of stadium.

Neville for me continues to improve i thought he had a good game in a losing side.

WOW Jets just won in peth

i would first like to give credit to the melbourne victory fans who didnt make a noise during the tribute, and i would like to give credit to WST to extending their silence throughout the entire match

if i had a gun glued to my ******* head and i payed the wanderers players to shoot me in the ******* head, they still would have all somehow managed to miss

on the plus side i saw 2 people having sex on the train

Santa's finishes tonight were very frustrating. Similar to the chances he had missed against Brisbane 2 weeks ago.

If Bulut had missed the chances Santa missed tonight, he would have been crucified. I don't hear any critics toward Santa's performance.

Santa has one bad game in ten.

feels like he had about 10 bad matches in that one match

The VIC were clinical. A title contender. We looked different. El cheapo gks. El cheapo cbs. El cheapo strikers. It shows. Western Sydney Mariners. Bottom half squad. The 2:0 sucked the air out of the team but nothing on the bench to force a change.

When Santa misfires the wheels fall off, but a 34 yo Santa can't do it all. He can't be super sub, starting player, goal scorer and match winner all at once, all the time. But no one there to help him.

Hope up front and at the back is not good enough. Playing well alone does not win games. The gamble with squad selection has failed. We need a goal scorer, a gk and a cb.

Santa: a few minutes after the final he was still sitting in his chair. He was so distraught that he had to be lifted to his feet by two guys from the club and helped to the locker room. He looked shattered.

Santas a proven club legend who's goal ratio per minutes playerd through last season and this one is better than Keogh, berish and fornaroli.

Sure he didn't have a good game that is correct, But to compare him to someone who has had maybe a few good games in 6 years is puzzling

And plus this thread is for redmayne hate don't change the subject haha

    Link to comment

Drop Redmayne for rest of season that first goal was junior stuff. Coach always tells his keeper if u can't catch push it to the side. The other 2 goals weren't his fault but they both came for counters after we wasted our opportunities. Really we should have been winning in the first half but we didn't take any chances. Ingham should have been sent off as well no one messes with Aspro

We have Nix next and is now more important game seeing as they also beat the Mariners. If we can't beat the top 4 we might as well try and win against the teams below us?

Agree with gunner. Santa has the credit in the bank to have an off game and not cop it. He has earned it through his commitment and quality.

The cb and gk positions are the problem. We are yet to keep a clean sheet, keeper errors have cost us in every game, aspro is learning but needs a consistent quality next to him. Borda is nowhere near good enough for a visa cb - makes you wonder how bad cornflakes must be in training that we keep trotting him out every week.

Then you hear stuff about us being well under the cap and calling Nico our marquee while paying him less than we paid castelen under the cap last year and you have to wonder what the hell is going on behind the scenes.....

What annoys me the most is this gun shy attitude to shooting on goals. There are times when the perfect ball is laid off and you need to hit it first time, but, of course we don't. The guy ready to shoot stops it, he loses all forward momentum, he then needs to create space again for the shot and then try and gain power from an almost standing position. By the time they decide to shoot the defence has had a chance to close down the shot and the chance has been snuffed. It does my head in time and time again.

TOO MUCH "PRETTY FOOTBALL" AROUND THE EDGES OF THE PENALTY BOX. How many times have we said it in the past - SHOOT FARRKEN.

What I will say is that I have never seen us miss so many good chances. I am also shaking my head at some of the saves Lawrence Thomas pulled off, especially that first one on Clisby. He had no right to get a fingertip on that. It was a WORLD CLASS save.

Season isn't over yet at all but will be if we don't make a move in transfer window, plenty of time left to find some quality shoot focking and a stop ya shoot focking keeper.

As FCB says constantly this is a cut price team. You are not going to get champagne football on cask wine prices. Cornflakes is another bargain basement pick up as was Bulut. We only have Nico cos we pay half his wages.

We are exactly where we deserve to be. Down amongst the perennial dead men like the jets and the nix hoping to scrape into 6th. This 'we are playing well but not taking our chances' mantra has now worn pretty thin.

Victory were nothing special but they were solid, organized and cynical when needs be and oh look, they took their chances.

No disrespect to them, because they are prospects, bur bringing on

    Baccus

    Scott

    Sotirio

To change a game hmmmmmm not much impact there is there really....

Most ineffectual triple substitution there is.

Still not sure what Sotirio brings. Popa winds him up and sends him on and he runs round a lot. Doesn't influence a game much, so far anyway.

Yeah, he has a bit to learn...

Feeling flat, 2-0 down and **** all on the bench and no impact...i dont think Popa could mix it up too much with the options he had which is pretty concerning.

Difficult to compete when you are playing against teams like Victory, Timmy Circus & ESFC who are prepared to spend the $.
